  1. Perfect post "Rebel Ron" very classy! Best of luck to the Rebs and 'Nados in the Boro.
  2. WAY to go Cumberland! I want to add my congratulations to Coach Hunt. One of the truly class gentlemen in our sport. Also congrats to my son's former Vol State teammates ... Craig, Jake and Tim! Whooooooo Hoooooo !
  3. Army will play LSU on Friday @ 2:00pm (cdt). One word of advice .... A trip to Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge is not like heading over to Lindsey Nelson, in Knoxville. Chances are good that all the tickets will be pre-sold. Look for over 9,000+ rabid LSU Tiger fans in attendance! You can order tickets .... check the article on the Army website. http://goarmysports.collegesports.com/spor...asebl-body.html Good Luck J!
  4. My apologies for leaving Jeremy Stache off the list. (that's the problem with making a list) And yes Army and Mr. Stache will be at a regional in the south. At LSU (the Box) to be exact. And they get the reward of playing the Tigers to open the regional! Good luck Jeremy!
  5. RebelRon, Your memory is still somewhat clear. While the Maryville baseball team did make a surprising run thru the state tournament in 1989, I would not say that they "upset" Central to get there. Todd Helton graduated from Central in 1992, Freeman and Trammel in 1991. That would have made them freshman and sophomores in '89. I would have expected the senior loaded Maryville team of 1989 to win. One player often forgotten on the great Central teams is Pug Woods. In high school he may have been the best player of the group.
  6. I have known Jack Powell (Pirates scout) for several years. He runs a good try-out camp. Better still is the opportunity to listen to what Jack has to say. Wise, knowledgeable and inspirational. Parents ... if you get a chance .... position yourself close enough to hear what Jack has to say when he addresses the boys, before the try-out.
  7. First off .... The Vols post-season hopes are not dead yet. Keep in mind that the Vols are 1 game ahead of Auburn, not 1 behind. The Vols have Florida at home while Auburn is at Arkansas, this weekend. Vandy looks to be in good shape with Kentucky at home. Even if Tennessee does not make the SEC tournament they have a good chance at being an NCAA Regional team, based on the exception made for Florida last year. The Vols RPI will, in all likelihood, end up in the top 30. (current rankings have them at a 20 rpi - last week) Playing and winning or losing to South Carolina and Florida will not hurt the rpi too much. Tennessee has shown an ability to spend the money needed to host a regional. NCAA baseball regionals are awarded based on the amount of money bid by the host school, as one of the primary points when considering sites. We'll see if Mike Hamilton is as good to the baseball program as Coach Dickey was, in the past. IF Rod should leave UT at the end of this season (for whatever reason) don't look for the new head man to be Garth Iorg. While he has an impressive track record in the professional ranks, he has never recruited before. The Tennessee baseball job is considered a "plum." I know several very good head coaches that would be interested. I don't think that it is fair to speculate on any names at this time. As a footnote ..... My opinion is that the only "pro guy" that Tennessee would consider for the baseball coach would be Phil Garner. Local boy returns.
  8. Current college player: Andy Howdeshell (Heritage 2000) Shortstop @ ETSU 2003 - 1st team Southern Conference 2004 pre-season honorable mention "All-American" 2003 stats: ba-.354, doubles - 14, hr-10 2004 (to date): ba- .344, doubles - 16, hr-8 Others: Caulkin, Lindsay and Birchfield are all at Carson-Newman Maryville College: Justin Kidd (Maryville) Brad Wicks and Mark Robinson (Heritage) Albert Davis Jr. (Alcoa) was drafted by the Pirates a few years ago and played a couple of minor league seasons.
  9. The MLB draft does not come down to just playing ability any longer. "Signability" becomes as important in many cases. Pro scouts actually can lose their jobs because they push for a player, the club drafts him in an early round and the player does not sign, due to money differences. The professional teams want to sign all of their early selections. For that reason much time and effort is spent trying to determine "how much it will take." Having said all of that Knoxville is fortunate to have 3 players that are on the draft radar. In no particular order. Kyle Waldrop Chris Kirkland Cale Iorg Matt Spencer (Mo West) is another on the radar. Ryan Moore (Chattanooga) is also on the radar screens. There are several other players from around the state that are considered "fringe" or late draft possibilities. Including a couple of east Tennessee players. As HV stated .... it is a good year in-state for high school baseball.
  10. I have watched TD play many times. He is a young man with a potentially big future. However the best SS in the state this season? Not in my humble opinion. I would have to go with Zach Cozart and Cale Iorg first. Of course both are seniors. One other thought ... Dad would love to see TD play catcher!
  11. Anyone know what grade (class) that Jarrett (sp?) Frasier is in? Saw him play over the weekend, nice looking athlete. Thanks
  12. Only a "no-no" and three homeruns? Did the young man not colect money for admission at the gate and sell a few hotdogs between innings? He needs to maximize his efforts next time. GREAT JOB DANIEL!
  13. I intentionally stayed out of this thread, until now. First let me say CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Pharr and his Farragut Admirals. Few of us can ever understand how difficult it must have been to be the bridesmaid and not the bride, in the past couple of years. Is this Farragut team the best team ever in the state of Tennessee? No ... In my opinion they are not. BUT all they had to be was the best team in 2003. They proved that they were that, on the field. Several times this season I was asked about the Farragut team. Questions such as "How good are they" ... "are they really that good?" etc. etc. In my humble opinion they are simply a high school coach's dream team. 12-13 very equal players that all know their roles and perform them whenever asked to do so. They have hitters up and down the line-up. They have a deep pitching staff. But maybe most importantly they did not wait around for a star player to deliver the game-winning hit. Or need a specific pitcher on the mound to win an important game. It seemed like a different Admiral was "the star" almost every game. From an outsider's view this team was fun to watch. So many of them have played together in the summer, for several years. This is not a coincidence that the team is so unselfish. That attitude comes right from the top .... Coach Pharr. I have never known or seen Tommy posture or try to get attention for himself. He is not one of those "Look how good a coach I am" types. But the Tennessee high school coaching community knows how good he is. And quietly the national community is learning as well. The best Tennessee team ever ... Probably not even the best Knoxville team ever. For those that are too young or may have forgotten, the Knox Central team of Helton, Trammell, Freeman and Woods was something very special! Germantown has had some unbelievable teams in the past few years, as has Oakland. The Unicoi County teams from several years back were much like the curent Farragut team and very good. What a wonderful season for the Admirals! One that many of us Knoxville area folks will remember for a good long time. As is customary on my site ........ Whooooooooo Hoooooo!
  14. Just food for thought. Does Cleveland have an X factor that is not being accounted for when it comes to Maryville? Maybe .... Coach Danny Wilson. Defensive Coordinator at CHS. He had some pretty good success at lowly Heritage against the Rebels. Something to think about. hmmmmmmm.....
  15. I have kept very quiet about this topic until now. When an uninformed person specifically posts incorrect information about a named individual it is time to make the correction. It was noted that student-athletes like "Wrobleski and McMahan" went to a county school because they could not handle the academics at Maryville. Wrong wrong wrong wrong! Shannon and David were both very good high school students. Wrobleski's ACT score was within 1 point of a perfect score. Both students are currently in the engineering cirriculum at Tennessee Tech. A little advice .... better check with the State of Tennessee, the test scores of the Maryville city school students ARE NOT better than the two Blount County schools. All are comparable. I will leave the recruiting argument to others. It is a very old and tired issue.
  16. There's some pretty exciting news going on right now. In the AAU 17 and under and 18 and under World Championships the kids from Tennessee are kicking butt! 17 and Under in Orlando, Florida All Tennessee final (for the championship) Dulins Dodgers (Memphis) versus Knoxville Thunder Link: http://www.aaubaseball.org/score/div1/17u/championbrkt.asp 18 and Under, in Fort Meyers, Florida Possible All Tennessee final Dulins Dodgers (Memphis) has already made it Shoetiques (Nashville) are playing now Link: http://www.aaubaseball.org/score/div1/18u/championbrkt.asp Bob Howdeshell High School Baseball Web
  17. JHite, Wow ... sign one week and the head coach leaves the next! I know of a couple of coaches that have inquired about the position but will keep it to myself for right now. Good Luck
  18. CoachT, This message is overdue .... but better late than never. I am going to post it in several forums to be sure that it is seen. I would like to thank CoachT for his work during the past high school season. The coverage and forums that he provides for the high school athlete in Tennessee is priceless! This was never more evident than during the recent "Spring Fling" period. Some many sports, so many championships, all going on simultaneously and Jim Thompson was on top of them all! I offer a tip of this ball cap to you CoachT and want to make sure that you know we do appreciate what you do. Sincerely, Bob Howdeshell High School Baseball Web

  22. Here's a link to the MLB site that has all the players from Tennessee. Both high school and college. http://mlb.mlb.com/components/draftday/mlb...ation_TN_1.html
  23. Jeremy Cabbage from Cleveland State will attend U.T. next year, as an invited walk-on. As CoachT stated ... only 2 in state high school signees for UT this year. In spite of a tremendous year for in state talent.
