  1. If you hang around Coach T long enough, you will read anything. This is a most remarkable post. "I am a d'burg grad...." So what? Lots of Dyersburg grads go to our games. This does not confer on a person any special ability analyze football (as you have preceded to make clear). "....and went to lasyt nights game" You didn't know what you were seeing apparently. "...any good noseguard will stuff a inside trap when a back crosses have the line to get the ball" Point one: we avoid that by blocking the noseguard; point two: we don't trap noseguards, point three, most teams we play run an even front and do not have a noseguard. When Dyersburg runs either of the A gaps, it is with the fullback quick. In another post, you said that the Dyersburg offense this year is like those which have been run by Crockett County, Covington and others. Not even close. Those were Wing T and Double Wing offenses--without the midline option. Those offenses relayed on 3 basic plays--FB trap, Buck Sweep, and a reverse commonly called "Sally." In recent years, a 4th basic play, the "jet sweep" or "speed sweep" has been added. Bowling's offense inclues the midline option. Our QB's read the inside defenders and give to FB or pull the ball out. It is an entirely new dimension to the formation. Those schools you named did not "read" the defense after the snap. You called for a "true I" formation or a spread. Let's see, "true I" would give us, Parker or Taylor at QB, Cunningham/Ellis at FB, and Caldwell at TB.--Taylor or Parker would be on the bench. Same is true of the spread--Caldwell and Taylor/Parker back--Cunningham/Ellis on the bench. Then you complain about our running wide (east-west) instead of north-south. Here are our actually rushing stats for 5 games: CALDWELL 39 rushes
  2. Dyersburg played NO reserves in this game. After having a great first half--28 points, 281 yards of offense, the zip just went away. The second half marked the first two consecutive quarters this year without a touchdown. Ripley rushed for 32 yards on 39 carries and had 14 plays for losses, sacks and tackles behind the line. Ripley connected on passes of 68 and 33 yards fior most of their offense on the night. Tyler Caldwell had about 125 yards on 6 carries and two TDs on runs of 43 and 53 yards. , Rashad Taylor was contained for most of the game but did score two TDs--10 yard run and a 16-yard pass from Logan Parker. Ripley forced Parker to keep the ball on the option and he had 104 yards on 16 carries. Dyersburg totaled over 300 yards of offense. I second the congratulations to Dyer County---great win.
  3. Thanka for the list. As someone who has watched West Tennessee football for over 40 years, the names brought back a lot of memories. I have always said that Ronald Holland was the best West Tennessee athlete I have seen--6 feet 4, 250 and a track sprinter, a top TE and then a tailback. When he broke through the front line of defense (or ran around it), which was often, it was so unfair to watch the 160 pound secondary players trying (not very enthusiastically) to tackle him. He was also a top notch basketball player. His teammate at TSU, Larry Kinnebrew, was just as talented and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. I have said that Holland was the best male athlete I have seen in West Tennessee and Fran Spencer, the JCM-Ole Miss tennis player, is the best female athlete. Kelsey Williams, Punkin Williams, Bowles--all were excellent backs. The one name which should have produced raised eyebrows is Tripp Tucker of USJ. Tucker was a creation of USJ's Single A schedule, the Jackson Sun sports department, and good family ties. Tucker was about 175, not too fast and could not have started at running back for any 4A or 5A school in the area. After winning every award the Jackson Sun could bestow, he went to UTM, where I don't think he ever got onto the field.
  4. Rashad Taylor has had 4 tremendous games to begin 2007. For those who are interested, here are Taylor's 4-game stats: * rushing--35 carries, 313 yards, 9 TDs, 8.94 average per carry * receiving--3 catches, 110 yards, 1 TD, 36.7 average * passing (played first two games at QB)--5 completions, 7 attempts, 109 yards, 1 TD * punt returns--4 returns for 128 yards, 32,9 average, 2 TDs * kickoff returns--2 returns for 35 yard, 17.5 average Taylor has 695 yards in total offense and 12 TDs after those 4 games.
  5. Details on Dyersburg-Haywood. * The final score was Dyersburg-21 (not 20) and Haywood-14 in two overtimes. * the wet field was really not much a factor. A drizzle fell through most of the second half. There were a few slips, but defense ruled. Haywood with nearly 300 yards a game on the ground in its first 2 games was held to 55 on the ground and 53 in the air. Dyersburg, said to be awesome on offense, got 40 in the air, 182 rushing for a total of 222. Haywood scored its only TD in regulation after a 3-yard "drive" following a D'burg fumble. From the end of the first quarter to six minutes left in the game, Haywood had 1 first down. Dyersburg had 6 fumbles lost in the game. * Dyersburg's defense, led by Bobby Ellis,Beau Liljenquist, Blake Thornton, and Hunter Newsome, shut down the Haywood running game * Haywood nose tackle Larry Fouse used his 312 pounds to wreck the Dyersburg running game on several occasions. * Dyersburg scored in the 3rd period to tie the game. The overtime went this way: 1. Dyersburg won the toss and deferred. On the first play, running back Luther Ward threw a HB pass to Altavis Douglas for a TD. Dyersburg retaliated on a 12-yard burst by fullback Ellis. 2. Dyersburg had the ball first in the second overtime. QB Logan Parker picked up 6 on the option, then pitched to HB Tyler Caldwell for the TD. Trailing 21-14, Haywood tried a flood pass on first down but QB Brett Stoots' pass was picked off by LB Hunter Newsome to end the game. * Logan Parker, who injured his thumb just over a month ago, saw his first action and QBed much of the second half. He was 0 for 4 in passing, but had 64 yards in 7 carries running the option. * Hunter Newsome's excellent play on defense was appropriate. His father, Dyersburg assistant coach Randy Newsome, suffered a heart attack just a week ago and had undergone quadruple-bypass surgery and had to listen from his bed at home. * Haywood was without its fine guard and defensive end Jackie Moore, who injured a knee in practice on Tuesday.
  6. The Covington coach--or any other head coach--is a fool to make such a statement (if, indeed, he did say that--of which I have some doubt). He will get several chances to stop Wing T offenses this year--Crockett County on Friday, Dyersburg later in the year, and Ripley and Haywood which run offenses which have some Wing T series. Can anyone say, "Bulletin Board Material!"?

    Mercy Rule

In the Dyersburg-Frayser game in Week 1, the rule came into effect at the beginning of the 4th quarter, probably shortened a sloppy game by 10-15 minutes. I still think that it is a shame this rule is deemed "necessary." This is something the two head coaches should be able to manage informally--but sometimes that doesn't happen The mercy rule is going to play heck with statistics and records, that's for certain.
  8. Just curious--and absolutely no offense intended--have you seen either Haywood or Dyersburg play this season?
  9. For your information, I happen to despise Fulmer (mostly for the manner in which he got the job and for his toleration of misdeeds by players until he was forced to toughen his policies), and am far from a Tennessee fan. AND, I understand your frustration--or am attempting to--it's just that I don't think you can solve Tennessee's alleged problems just by changing head coaches. And just what ARE Tennessee's football problems? They lost to one of the nation's best offenses in the season's opener. I don't see the sky falling. If you are hoping to compete with LSU and Florida every year, you've got work ahead.
  10. Has it occurred to you that there are fans just like you, with that same determination to be excellent, in Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, Baton Rouge, Athens and other places around the SEC? You don't seem to grasp the fact that there are "Tide Faithful," "Gator Faithful," Tiger Faithful," going about saying what they are not going to be satsfied with. Do you think that Tennessee has a monopoly on loyal fans, and fat-walleted alumni? You seem to think that all you have to do is wish really hard for a good team and it will be delivered to you. What you "don't settle for" is completely irrelevant to the discussion. You can set the bar as high as you wish, getting over the bar is the payoff. What Tennessee can produce is the relevant issue. Tennessee high school football is below the caliber of the other SEC contending states--Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Florida. Tennessee's recruiting classes have been highly-ranked, the only problem being the bringing in of low-academic types who have to be "farmed out" to junior colleges and military academies. I am not a Fulmer fan but if you think that you can go find a head coach who will solve the problems, I think that is simplistic thinking.
  11. I'm not a UT supporter, but I think some of you Vol fans may be hitting the panic button a little early. I thought Tennnessee looked like a darned good team. You gotta remember that this Cal team had more offensive weapons than Tennessee will see again this season. With Tedford in charge of their offense, they are very "blue collar" and not at all like the image of a "West Coast" team. Their wide receiver corps can hardly be topped and they had two TBs who ran both fast and hard. Seems to me you couldn't wish for a better QB than Ainge, A. Foster looked good, and I doubt that Berry will be out of the starting lineup again. It looks like the defensive front may be an issue. I guess it comes down to what you choose to define as success. I think 8 wins would be a lock, 9 wins with some breaks, beyond that a bit of a stretch. If something happens to Ainge, all bets would be off.
  12. Any plans as to where JCM is going to get some "coaches there to really coach them" before Friday night? Anytime soon? I've watched Jackson High and JCM teams for over 40 years, and this was the most disorganized and untalented of the group. JCM will have to go back to Square 1, I believe.
  13. Week Zero's big game wasn't. This is by far the worst JCM team in memory, and one of the worst 4-A teams in West Tennessee. The Cougars has minus yards rushing for the game, and the game was much more lopsided than the score. JCM's final two TDs came after the issue was decided and many subs were playing. The halftime score was 16-0. The two JCM lines were unsuccessful in opening holes in the big Haywood front and could not stop the Haywood ground game. Haywood had about 214 rushing in the first half. Haywood threw 1 pass, a screen, during the entire game. JCM's inability aside, Haywood looks good. Their ball-control rushing game was effective, and their huge fronts completely stopped JCM on the ground. JCM dumped about twenty short passes into the flats and completed them. Haywood played soft and gave up the yardage willingly, and tried not to allow any breakaways. Assuming that Haywood handles Kirby next week, they should come into Dyersburg 2-0. They will be a worthy opponent and should not be underestimated. As for JCM, long year, a very long year.
  14. After having followed football in West Tennessee for 40 years as a coach, writer, statistician, and fan, I am fairly conversant about how classifications are made, though I do appreciate the "refresher." I am also aware that the consensus of coaches and fans is that the big gap in performance is between 1A and the other classifications. 4-A's and 5-A's are often interchangeable, but 1-A, by virtue of its lack of numbers, can seldom compete. Dyersburg has certainly had its share of dry spells. The most celebrated running back in USJ's history, the Jackson Sun named him its "Player of the Year" one year, could never have started at running back for JCM or Jackson Northside in those years. We'll just watch and see how USJ does this year, the next year, and on and on. Will it be a long "dry spell"? I suspect it will and the "spell" will be with 2-A's.
  15. ....and then USJ entered 2-A and began to play real football teams, not Greenfield, Halls, and the other 1-A misfits. The results have been predictable. Honors given by the Jackson Sun should be taken with a grain of salt, since it is generally known by West Tennessee fans that the Sun's sportswriters were so far up a part of USJ's anatomy that they all had brown hair after one year on the job. Of late, even the Sun has turned to the more successful JCS team.
  16. On August 24, 2001, Dyer County beat Dyersburg 16-14 at J. C. Sawyers Stadium. (I will always remember that date--I got married that day.) This was in James Counce's 5th year at Dyersburg. This was the first time to the two schools had played each other since 1947! There was no 7-0 Dyer County victory in our lifetimes. For most of those years, DC was in Class 1 and Dyersburg was in Class 4. Since World War II, Dyersburg and Dyer County have played 6 times; Dyer County won that 2001 meeting and Dyersburg has won the last 5. I like Dyer County football. Ab Davis was long-time coach there and one of my best friends. He also coached at Dyersburg briefly. His grandson is one of the leaders of the current D. C. team. I hope they do well. You admit that Dyersburg is "miles and miles ahead of Dyer County" now in football. I agree, but I would also point out that you can't close that gap just by creating "facts" about the past. Incidentally, allow me to apologize, on behalf of several DHS fans, for "trojanfan56," whoever he is. He is absurd, of course, but, thank goodness, his opinions are his alone and not shared by any others of his species.
  17. I believe it is factual that Coach McAdams at David Lipscomb not only did not play or coach in college, he didn't play in high school, has not ever played in a football game in his life. He has done very well, has the respect and admiration of the other coaches, and has made a great contribution to the game.
  18. trojanfan56, enough! ENOUGH !! Have you seen Dyer County practice this year? Have you seen Obion County practice? Can you name a single player on their teams? Is there anyone else out there who doesn't believe that ANY varsity team in Region 7 3-A could beat any freshman team in the region? Why do you make these outrageous claims? Do you think the readers of these forums are laughing WITH you or laughing AT you? Attention to the fans of the other 6 schools in Region 7 3-A: We will trade you trojanfan56 for any fan you have--sight unseen.
  19. There is, indeed, this group of fans who pull for both Dyer County teams. A few years ago, Dyer County had a super girls team, undefeated until well into the tournament season. A number of Dyersburg fans (I was one of t hem.) attended all their tournament games. Ab Davis, who coached for years at Dyer County and for a short time at Dyersburg, is a good friend. I hope Dyer County--and especially Ab's grandson--have good seasons this year. Dyer County had an excellent basketball team last year (men's) and I know there were some Dyersburg fans who pulled for them. The DC baseball team does well, and I hope they win everything except the Dyersburg games. Some people think they can elevate their school by dragging down other schools. When I posed the question about who had the most class, the school's players or their fans, I was also referring to the remarkable tendency to exaggerate and tell outright untruths on this forum. "Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story," I suppose. If I could make changes to Coach T's format, I would suggest--using your own name, not a false name and avatar, including a picture of yourself and your address. I very much agree with "bonestrojan" about getting alone in front of a computer and hiding behind anonymity. I some ways, Coach T is a bit like a newspaper publishing unsigned letters to the editor. For many years, that was known as the very definition of a trashy paper. People should not write things they are not willing to stand behind.
  20. Quick quiz: Who speaks with more reason, respect, and logic, Dyersburg and Dyer County football players or Dyersburg and Dyer County fans? If you need any hint at all, review the posts on this site.
  21. Covington has made a good living running the Wing T and Double Wing offense for many years. Three coaches did very well with it. In order to have a pass offense, you have to have a passer. Could Covington have developed a passer? Probably, but we will never know. Hoskins, last year's QB, was a good athlete, a good baseball player with a strong arm, but he couldn't throw the football in an ocean. Dyersburg played Covington twice last season. Covington threw 20 passes (10 per game would not be far off the high school average.), completd 2 of those 20 for a total of 10 yards, with 4 interceptions.
