  1. Read the quote... "BTW - Mayhall would not start for schools like Maryville, this year's Powell team, Alcoa, & a few other schools I could list." I didn't say he wouldn't start for every school in TN. However, he wouldn't have started for those 3 programs I named for sure...
  2. I have to agree with Aurielio here. Not being a head coach doesn't mean he couldn't have been one. I'd venture to say his football resume is more attractive than yours... BTW - Mayhall would not start for schools like Maryville, this year's Powell team, Alcoa, & a few other schools I could list. You want to bring up South Side, really???
  3. From what I understand you guys never gave Hammontree a chance...
  4. ok... I have no clue on how to respond to your message, but you can email me at Jason@OneTenTech.com

  6. What's up man... Good guess BTW

  7. Nix is indeed local & he played with me at Maryville. I'm very proud of what he's accomplished as a coach there & it goes w/o saying that you don't have to be a great player to be a great coach. He wasn't a starter for us per se when he played, but he did have a really good football IQ & is certainly a good candidate to help continue the tradition at Alcoa. That said, it would be devastating for Alcoa to replace Rankin with a coach the likes of Phelps or Meadows. Reid wasn't all that great either, but at least he got the ball rolling a little bit in regards to getting a viable off season weight program, some structured discipline, & a few other things that Alcoa should have had in place a LONG time ago...
  8. Go back & check your records... Greenback & Catholic played each other on a regular basis & Greenback won convincingly every time. 1991 - GHS 65 KCHS 7 1992 - GHS 39 KCHS 0 1993 - GHS 24 KCHS 6 1994 - GHS 30 KCHS 6 1995 - GHS 34 KCHS 18 & GHS 33 KCHS 0 (PLAYOFFS) 1996 - GHS 39 KCHS 7
  9. Ha! Quarles dancing a "jig" that Pemberton left. If you believe that the it's you who may have lost an Easter egg. That Wing-T, ball control, eat the clock, blah blah blah, would have been eaten alive year after year even if he was still there. Face it, Catholic's going to go back to the days when they were getting beat by the Greenbacks of the world on a regular basis unless Rankin comes to town.
  10. Is this the same paper that employs Bob Gilbert now???
  11. Sorry I offended you, maybe my humor is a little too "touchy" for you. As far as Oggs goes, his family moved to Alcoa therefore making his transfer legit...
  12. Congratulations! What was your previous experience in wrestling before becoming the coach at Central?
  13. Lol, I definitely had a Beavis & Butthead revival moment just now... "He said beat the privates! Huh huhu hu huhhuhu huhu! He hehe ehehehe hehe he eh ehe heheh!!"
  14. I agree strongx that the Maryville 2009 team was good, but I'd have to say that was one of the weakest Maryville teams to make the state title game. They overcame a lot moving up to 6A, but they got beat down by Alcoa & in the 6A title game too. Juhlin was real good that year after blowing the title game the year before against Hillsboro, but I doubt he would start over Patton now. This year's Maryville team could go down as one of the greats for sure, but I feel Maryville's strongest team IMO is either the '98 team with Toki McCray at QB or the year that Tyler Maples was a Sr. I'm not sure the year, but having Maples, Burnette, & Douglas was real scary for opposing D's. As far as Cleveland goes, they beat us 70-28 that year at Maryville during Hammontree's 1st year. They had legitimately 7-8 guys that ran 4.4 times, a monstrous OL, depth for days, & ran the wing T better than any team I've ever seen. They eaked out a 7-6 victory over Brentwood Academy that year in the title game, but against us they scored on 3 out the 1st 4 times they touched the ball against us that game. One Cobb twin left for 60 yards, one Cobb twin right for close to 70 yards, then the double reverse with Dante Hickey for about 75 yards was all it took. heck, even Chris Whaley's opening carry up the middle from FB went 20 yards. It was bad... Thankfully, we tied the game up at 21-21 before they scored again right before halftime to put it 28-21. We tied it again at 28 all after half, but then they just rattled off 42 unanswered to finish us off at 70-28. Their 2nd & 3rd stringers ran up & down on our starters like they didn't even miss their starters... Definitely BRUTAL! One of my wrestling teammates at UT Chatt played NG for those great Cleveland teams & we talked about that game a lot. He said they were pissed at half b/c we scored that many on them & he claimed there were a few Maryville fans yelling racist comments at them when they left the field for the half (I don't believe that part so much). We ended up scoring more points on them than any one else that year & Benny Monroe was really unhappy we were making him look bad in his return to Maryville. I think that the worst Maryville's ever been beaten in the modern era as far as I know...
  15. Kevin was unreal, but again squandered his talent. I'm sure the Riverdale teams have probably had a few that could have starred for them, but unfortunate circumstances keep them from succeeding.. I know Alcoa's had their fair share too or they would have won a ton of more titles themselves. Particularly the classes in the mid to late 90's, Alcoa had the Webb brothers with youngest one being the best of the bunch (Andre). The older 2 played great as OLB for them, but Andre has to be one of the most gifted RB Alcoa's had in 20 years. He wasn't any more than 160, but with his raw speed & "Barry Sanders" like moves he was almost impossible to stop. The only player they've had since then that has Andre's kind of maneuverability might be Cobb, he was that good... For whatever reason Andre got let go, but I bet almost every great team looses a player or 2 that doesn't fulfill their potential. It's a shame really, for every great team that gets mentioned as being the best ever, I'm sure they have a story or 2 on why they could have been ever better. For instance, imagine what Cookeville would have looked like if Eric Locke hadn't moved to Murfreesboro.
  16. Thurman was one of my best friends my Jr. & Sr. years at Maryville. He was our #2 TB & started CB on the opposite side of me during my Sr. year. He got kicked off the Monday after the Alcoa game before we played Halls & we eventually lost our starting WR/FS, OLB/WR, TB, & FB towards the end of the year due to injuries. Cleveland 3 peated that year, but I think if we were healthy there's no way we wouldn't have come back without the 1st title since '78 for Maryville. Unfortunately we lost to a team we beat down in the regular season (Smyrna) in the 2nd round at home & they barely lost to Cleveland in the semis. That said, we had another guy from OR transfer in my freshman year you might have heard of too, Demetrius Holmes. Ring a bell?? He came in & said he had never played football in his whole life & said he only played basketball for OR growing up. Needless to say he was probably the most explosive RB Maryville has EVER had, but he also couldn't stay out of trouble & got kicked out just like Thurman. His 1st game starting for us our Freshman year against Lenoir City (keep in mind he'd only been playing football for 3 weeks before this) he had 7 carries for 205 yards! He averaged close to 200 yards a game for the rest of the year & broke at least one run for 60 yards every game. He was faster than Thurman, had better vision, & was a stronger runner after contact (if you could touch him). Just like a lot of other talented kids, he didn't pan out & was the biggest waste of talent other than one guy we had that DOMINATED Roy Howard when we scrimmaged you guys my Sophmore year. That guy's name is Kevin Patrick & I would say he was the epitomy of a physical freak as I've ever seen one. He was 6'4 270 as a Sophmore & ran a legit 4.65!! He & I were always in the top 5 fastest kids for our grade growing up in Maryville City school system, but he was so huge it almost made it unfair for him to be that fast! He lined up at TE & DE against Roy & pretty much owned him all night our Soph year. Your head coach (Gaddis I think) came up to Coach Hammontree after the game & said he'd never seen a Soph like that & no one ever dominated Roy like that either... Sadly, he too got kicked off our Soph year right after Demetrius got booted otherwise our Sr. class would have been untouched in '95.. lol
  17. Lol, that's funny. I ran around with a bunch of OR folks when I wrestled at UT Chatt that you might know then. Needless to say, my eyes got real wide & I actually batted down 2 passes intended for Roy when we lined up across from each other. The next year (my Sr. year) we scrimmaged you guys at OR & I was lined up against McAddley all night. Shut him down pretty easy, but Bohannon ran me over a few times like he did most folks that year. BTW - We had one guy transfer from OR that played pretty well for us until he got kicked off after the Alcoa game my Sr. year. Thurman Bates, does that name ring a bell? I know he said he was cousins with Marcus Bates from up that way...
  18. What coach are you talking about?? If you're talking about GQ, I don't know how much he makes, but I'm sure it's very good. He teaches Driver's Ed so I'm not sure you can consider that his car per se, but he taught Driver's Ed even before he became HC so I doubt that's a "perk" of his. I could be wrong though...
  19. I remember scrimmaging OR that preseason at Maryville. I can't recall if Bohannon or McAdley(sp?) played that year, but I remember lining up as a DB across big Roy Howard from OR a few times when he split out wide from his TE spot in some formations... I thought I was about to get murdered! That said, I'm not sure either OR or Riverdale could have beat Cleveland in 93 or 94.
  20. No problem, Billy. Again, he had one good year & got us to the playoffs. However, that Maryville aquad was loaded with talent & I didn't even mention the 2 Jr's on that team that were getting heavy interest from FSU & the Gators. The one weak link would have been our O-line & with a better coach we probably still wouldn't have beat Clinton that year, but we definitley could have kept it close. It's kind of funny though that the next year we blasted Clinton & we had less talent than the tesm who Clinton beat the year before... BTW - The head coach for Clinton all of those years just so happens to be the DC at Maryville now (Coach Gaylor). Ironic huh??
  21. He definitely thought he was a better coach than he actually is. Granted he was the 1st coach to bring Maryville back to the playoffs after we had a drought, but his offensive play calling was bad as well as his "holier than thou" attitude was fake. On the topic of foul language, I can assure you he reeled off more than his fair share of foul language statement when I was there. As far as his coaching ability, we had the talent to go deep into the playoffs that year with a 1000 yard receiver, an all region QB, & one of the best RB's in the state that year next to Scotty Witt from Clinton (the CG runner up to Gallatin) & Travis Cozart from Lenoir City. Our RB averaged over 10 yards per carry that year, but all Olive wanted to do is run his offense the way he wanted instead of utilizing his team's strengths. When you have a thoroughbred at RB, but you keep wanting to go to your X, Y & Z backs trying to be cute, that just shows me your either arrogant, stupid, or both! That said, when he left EVERYONE was happy & Maryville would not be where it's at today if he would have stayed there.
  22. Ha ha! That's the funniest thing I've heard all month!
  23. I believe Troy Fleming's little brother is the RB for Centennial. Talked to Troy this week & he said he would be attending. I told him I'd have to pull for East TN & LC this time, but I'm sure it will be a good game. Anybody from LC know what happened to Travis Cozart?? He was a great HS running back who should have done big things at UT... :/
  24. They have never had "open enrollment". The only system they used to have was allowing Blount County students who wanted to attend the city schools the ability to pay tuition to go there. Both schools have become so over crowded now that they don't allow that practice any more, but people like you who don't chek their facts seem to think it still exists. I could go on & on about folks like you that think they know it all when your facts are clearly wrong, but to save this thread from becoming childish I won't stoop to that level. At least when I give the facts, I make sure I'm right so I don't look stupid... Maybe you should go back to clubbing at the techno bar & blow some Vic's in your eyes then maybe you'll see straight!
  25. They still don't have as many titles as Alcoa or Maryville, but as far as the best team in one year my vote would have to go to the Cleveland team of 1993. That team was LOADED & beat Brentwood Academy in the SC game... BTW - Before there were playoffs, Maryville's 1964 team was virtually unscored on & rated one of the top teams in the nation that year as well.
