  1. I caught the last few minutes of this game, enough to see Brentwood knock in a late goal to win 1-0. What's all the controversy with the disallowed goal?
  2. What was the" interference" call against LC's keeper that the News-Sentinel referred to in the writeup? Anyone know the details? I assume they called obstruction? Was the result an indirect free kick for Elizabethton or what?
  3. If tied after the first 5 kicks by each team, each coach must submit a list of 5 more players to kick that must be different from the first 5 unless he has fewer than 10 players due to injury or disqualification. However it is sudden victory with each pair of kicks.
  4. There is no such thing as stoppage time in high school. The referee stops his watch for specific reasons only and when the time is up, it's up, unlike FIFA and USSF where the watch runs continuously and the referee adds stoppage time for subs, injuries, etc. at his discretion. PK's begin with a group of 5 from each team, alternate shot. If still tied after all ten kicks, then it is one kick each until one makes and one misses. Also, not all 5 from each time have to kick for it to end. For instance team A makes their first three kicks, team B misses their first three, it's over since team B cannot win no matter what the 4th and 5th kickers do.
  5. Looking for info on Bearden-Farragut Round 3. Thanks.
  6. The official high school rules for overtime are 2 complete 10 minute periods no matter how many goals are scored. If still tied, 2 5 minute golden goal periods are played where the first goal wins and ends the game. If still tied, then penalty kicks. Remember that the clock is stopped by the referee for various reasons which may make the period seem longer. These include goals, misconduct(yellow and red cards), penalty kicks and injuries. thumb
  7. Looking for info on the Bearden-Halls game tonight.
  8. Wow, Farragut keeps stayin' alive with a pk win over Maryville and an overtime win over OR. Who has some details?
  9. Don't post ridiculous responses. I don't see Farragut having a problem winning this game.
  10. Yes, I was on the bench to make sure you guys didn't get hurt and of course to offer Big G Express timely coaching pointers.
  11. CAK defeated Seymour 3-1 after falling behind 1-0 in the second half. Seymour played well and gave the Warriors all they wanted. What about the other games? Scores and info please!
  12. What's the story with the red card? Serious foul play or what?? That's got to be tough being a senior and suspended for the Bearden game although they may meet again in the region.
  13. So why the hard red? I assume for serious foul play or violent conduct? What was the actual call?
  14. Oak Ridge at 6 when they lost to Farragut 3-0???
  15. 1. Is a handball inside the 18/box not always a PK? (if called for the foul) Or can a indirect/direct kick be taken instead? 2. Can free points just be awarded by a ref? 3. Is it not cardable if a player consistently stands within 2 feet of the ball during a direct/indirect kick? I'm going to give my 2 cents as a fan, dad, and TSSAA/USSF certified referee. I am a bit amused at the quiz offered earlier and will offer my answers. 1. A called penal foul against the defense(this includes handling) in the penalty area shall result in a penalty kick. There is no such thing as a direct kick for the offense in the penalty area-this is always a penalty kick from the penalty mark. The offense may be given an indirect kick in the penalty area for non penal violations...dangerous play, ball played back to keeper by his own team by foot and handled by keeper, etc. 2. A goal may never be awarded by a referee. The ball must totally cross the goal line under the cross bar and between the side posts to be considered for a goal, assuming no violations...offside, foul, etc. Even if the ball is rolling toward the goal about to go in and a bird flies down and blocks it away...still no goal. 3. Certainly this warrants a caution. I instruct the captains in the pregame to make sure their teams retreat when a free kick is called or they will see the yellow card. Not calling this awards the defense and unfairly impedes the offense. It is the offenses right to a quick kick; the defense has no right to delay them. Different officials may call this differently; however, this is how I call it. Lastly, but most importantly, most if not all coaches know who the assessors and assignors are for their games and that is the mechanism to use if the rules do not seem to be applied properly. I believe our local association TVSRA does quite a good job of educating officials, assigning, and assessing. Many of our officials are selected for regional and national events, training, etc. TSSAA itself does not provide anything other than book testing and one rules meeting a year; the local referee organization is the critical factor. We do need more refs, so I encourage any and all of you to get certified through USSF and subsequently TSSAA post high school and help us out!! The next entry level course is the weekend of August 19 at Maryville High school. There are others for other parts of the state. 16. There was definite frustration at the end as evidenced by Maryville's 2 cautions, the last one being on Mr. Franklin who promptly took off his jersey and threw it on the bench. This was a physical game that was fun to watch. thumb
  17. I look for a physical game. Both have offensive firepower; I don't know much about Maryville's defense other than they held Farragut to one goal. A defensive miscue may be the difference.
  18. I think this will be a great game unless Maryville gets roughed up by Farragut on Tuesday. I haven't seen Maryville play; anyone who has seen both teams, what do you think? thumb
  19. I think the best teams are the ones that are committed to the team and each other. That means off season conditioning, attending all practices and games and giving your best effort all the time whether it's spring break, Saturday, prom, whatever. Punishment should be up to the coach and captains to decide. thumb
  20. Farragut took a 3-0 loss last night to Catholic so I wouldn't anoint them best team in the state right now. The Bearden game tomorrow should be a good test for them also.
  21. OK, I will jump in here. I'm a TSSAA referee in addition to a USSF referee and I started as an AYSO referee. I still ref in USSF and TSSAA games. First, a little background. It is true that you can be a TSSAA ref by applying, getting two coaches or school official references and passing an open book test. However, you cannot ref any playoff games without passing a closed book test every year and attending a state sponsored rules meeting. More importantly, our assignor is going to start you slowly with AR positions on easier games and work your way up. Our local organization, TVSRA, also strongly recommends that all of us also have USSF certification and the vast majority do. Now for a few points: 1. Some schools prefer the 2 ref dual system, however, usually when 2 refs are assigned instead of three it's purely due to availability. 2. I like the dual system personally but it requires more running and concentration. 3. I doubt any of us do this for the money. $50 for a center and $40 for an AR is hardly worth some of the grief we have to endure. I do it because I love soccer and like to be involved and happen to think I generally do a good job and keep the game fair. 4. My main gripe with my colleagues is conditioning and keeping up with play. I will miss some calls but I'm not going to miss it because I'm out of position. Nothing aggravates me more than seeing a center ref call a foul from 30 or 40 yards away(especially a PK.) 5. Overall, I think the refs here in East TN do a very good job and our assignor is very good at placing the more experienced refs in the bigger games and playoffs as she should. When players start complaining about the refs they typically lose focus on the game and their play falters. Good luck, I'll probably see you guys out there on the pitch someday...and I will call it fair.
  22. OK, I'm adding my 2 cents here as a former player(many years ago) and a current high school and USSF referee. Cheating however you define it is not part of the game and you clearly don't have to cheat to win. Referees are not responsible for sportmanship-that is the players' and coaches' responsibilities. We are there to enforce the rules of the game. It's unfortunate when players try to see what they can get away with and many referees are too lax. There's no excuse for delaying a free kick by whatever means(kicking the ball away, holding it, tying your shoe in front, intentionally standing within 10 yards, etc...)...that hurts the team that was fouled. I show no mercy( I keep my yellow card in easy reach in my front pocket) when that happens and I warn the captains in the pregame. Serious foul play should be dealt with severely and there is no place in the game for it. That's what the red card is for(among others). A talented, well coached team has no reason to pull these stunts and they are fun to watch and referee. Those are the games I enjoy.
  23. I haven't seen much here regarding the back to back AAA champs this year. Has anyone seen them scrimmage or have any scores/info?
