  1. How many players start at Clarkrange High though who are actually zoned to attend a different high school (like York) but decide to go to Clarkrange instead? I've heard numerous coaches talk over the years about how that this girl was supposed to go to this high school but decided to go to Clarkrange instead, particularly the number of girls who were supposed to go to York that wind up at Clarkrange. Maybe that's not actually transferring from one high school to another, but it's essentially the same principle to me (playing with girls that may be from Fentress County but who aren't actually yours). There were 283 kids at Clarkrange at last fall's reclassification count, and you're trying to tell me that kids who aren't homegrown Clarkrange kids don't play there...come on now. The locals in the area know what the truth is. The problem becomes the fact that the Jackson Countys of the world aren't going to chastise Clarkrange, because the same thing happens at Jackson County. The same thing happens at most schools in that area. It's become such an accepted occurrence in that area that people don't even see it as out of the ordinary. While the rest of the world plays with the cards they're dealt, the players at the small schools in that area just hop from school to school if they wish.
  2. Barnes started when he was a freshman because the team had no guards and was honestly terrible. Mathis will tell you that. Barnes would as well I think. He was a really good player. He would have been a much bigger scorer in a program that didn't have a Steven Jamison and a Rogers Gaines. I just don't believe that Jeremy is in that top-tier elite class. It's kind of strange how that most of the program's best players have been post players.
  3. Barnes was a really good, heady player, and he is a good kid. I'm not sure he's in that elite class. He might be slightly below most of those guys. But I suppose that those big guys needed somebody to get them the ball. Seth Matlock was a really good player. Heath did the dirty work, was a solid defender and rebounder (and who doesn't have a ton of respect for that), but I believe that Seth was the better player even as a junior. He was just far more polished. No offense to Mr. Chamberlain, but he played before my day. If he's anywhere in the level of Reece, I can see him mentioned among those other players though. Reece is so good (a total team player) right now and still has a year left. There have been some other very solid players that have come through that program. They're a solid AA program. It's kind of sad that they have only made two state trips and haven't won a game when they've gotten there. Andy Corn was always overshadowed by Webster, but what a great athlete and a very good guard. There have been other solid players (overachievers like Drew Lowery, Danny Stemann), but I can't think of any others in the class of those you mentioned.
  4. How do you know that for sure? Why does the TSSAA have it incorrect?
  5. TSSAA reports RE record to be 33-2. Coacht has it at 32-2. Does anybody know what is the deal with the discrepency? How does the city championship work in Memphis? Do you play a small tournament to win it, or are two teams just placed in the city championship game? What is the atmosphere like for that and where is it held?
  6. That's a nice run and all, but I would think that sustaining the program would mean that the program would continue to a power for more than just 10 years. No offense, great run for sure. But if it's coming to an end as you seem to imply, then I wouldn't say they've sustained a whole lot.
  7. Taylor is about 6-5. He's Beech's only real post player. Brown kind of plays a four spot, but he'll step out on the floor. He's 6-3 or 6-4. Chamberlain is a 6-1 guard. Dorse is a 6-0 guard. Cowan is a 6-2 guard.
  8. He suffered the injury in their playoff opener against Tullahoma, not that two weeks is that much more time. Good luck to Coach Joines and the Bucs, but they're not winning the state with him at 100 percent. Solid team, not that good though.
  9. Class AAA favorite Wilson Central...gone Class AA favorite Marshall County...gone Class A defending champ Jackson County...yep, gone Shelbyville...gone (though many won't consider that any upset) Riverdale...gone (also may not be considered an upset by many) Collinwood...gone Station Camp...gone Wild night...you just never know
  10. How does it feel to be president of the Corey Brewer fan club? You already have Brewer being an all-star, and he has not even been a constant fixture in the Timberwolves' starting lineup yet. Sure, he has upside. But how much upside is there is something that none of us - even the Timberwolves organization - know yet. Before you have him making at least 60 million dollars and signing two long-term contracts and proclaim him as at least a borderline all-star, at least be realistic. I'm a Corey Brewer fan as well. He seems like a class act. However, to think all of the aforementioned accomplishment are a done deal is somewhat unrealistic. If he doesn't score more, he will not be an all-star in the NBA. Good luck to Corey though. What a great kid. Corey accomplished more in high school than Jenkins has and likely will. It is my belief that Jenkins is the better player. He impacts the game far more. Brewer saw some junk defenses as well, but it was nothing like what Jenkins has experienced. His shooting percentage this season is probably 15 percent higher than Brewer's was his senior year. Brewer averaged around 30 points per game, slightly under I'm relatively sure. He carried his team. He shot it a ton too though and didn't shoot a bad - but also not an unbelievable - percentage. He deserved Mr. Basketball. Brewer benefited from being part of a class in which there was not as much overall talent at his position. He was not one of the better players in that McDonald's All-American Game, but what an accomplishment it was to even be among that elite group of athletes. Jenkins is in a class that is relatively shooting guard heavy. That's why he didn't make it. Leslie McDonald may not be better than Brewer, but he's rated higher and has signed with a far more high-profile program (North Carolina). Whether we agree with that or not, it makes McDonald rated ahead of Jenkins in this year's senior class and gives him greater clout in terms of those elite honors. And McDonald is not rated in the top couple of shooting guards in this year's class. I think he's somewhere in the 3-5 range if I'm not mistaken. Jenkins doesn't have Brewer's height and athleticism, and Corey worked his butt off. As unbelievable as Brewer's work ethic was, I believe that Jenkins work ethic may be even better. When you can fill it up like Jenkins can, you'll be a factor. Whether he becomes a can't miss NBA guy remains to be seen. Just enjoy watching Jenkins at Vanderbilt and the rest of this season. He does have a ton still to do in order to get to the Corey Brewer level. I wish both players all of the best.
  11. What D-1 program has Heady made a verbal to? I'm not buying the three transfers in eight years notation. Also, how many girls have gone to junior high outside of the clarkrange area but managed to find their way to clarkrange high school? I've heard from many people how many players fall in the lap of clarkrange high that don't/haven't lived there. Big difference in the caliber of Alysha Clark and Molly Heady, correction - huge difference. Good luck to all.
  12. But look at it from this perspective, how must it seem to Pickett County, Clay County, Red Boiling Springs and Monterey when they CONTINUALLY see players migrating into the Jackson County and Clarkrange programs. This is not a one-time thing, and as of late, it's not that they're just going from Cookeville or Jamestown into one of those Class A programs. They're going from one district school to another. It's ridiculous. You JC and CR supporters want to ignore it, because it gives you a chance to win the state every year. I'd be bitter too though if I were Monterey or RBS. Like you have all said, Molly Heady is going to get her awards, so why is it such a big deal that some bitter coach from another school votes her low on the all-district team. Maybe he's not voting for that program as much as he's not voting for that girl. Maybe it's the principle involved. If CR didn't have Heady, CR would still be good. However, CR would be much more beatable. If JC didn't have Laken, JC would be FAR more beatable. If Monterey had Heady and Adkins, Monterey would have had a real shot at second or third in that district this season. Instead, Monterey finishes last. I wouldn't vote for Heady either. If I were Larry White, I'd never vote for Laken. Everybody wants to talk about how "these young ladies don't deserve this from a bitter coach." Well, those young ladies are going to get their awards anyway. Those coaches' jobs are riding on how those players perform. Look at it from the other perspective. You don't think the guy at Monterey worked hard to get his program competitive and finally be able to compete with JC and CR. He could have done that this season and next season. I'm not saying he would have beaten them, but he would have finally at least competed with them. That's gone now though. What if he loses his coaching job because of how poorly that program has performed. What about the supporting players at Monterey who had worked hard and felt like they would win a lot of games this season and next. How are those fine, hard-working young ladies affected. It affects more than just the young ladies who transferred.
  13. You are correct about that I'm sure. I don't buy it. You'd outwardly cry like RBS did when Laken left. You'd moan and grown like Monterey did when Heady and Adkins left. You all have had so much transferring of great players from program to program up in that area that you just see it as acceptable actions. That's crap. Players should not transfer just to win. Play with the cards you're dealt. It shows far more integrity if you do. You're not going to be able to thrust yourself into a positive situation for the rest of your life. Sometimes, you're going to have to make lemonade when life gives you a lemon. And Monterey would have been pretty darn good this season if Heady and Adkins would have stayed. If Molly Heady took the proper steps, she would have gotten near the same amount of recruiting attention whether she was at Clarkrange or Monterey. If you can play, college coaches will find you. She's a very good player, but she's not going to be a post player at a major Division 1 basketball program due to her 5-11 or 6-0 height. The NAIAs, JUCOs and D-2 and D-3 will come calling. Best of luck to all.
  14. Not sure that Brewer scored 50 very often at all. His average his senior year was 28.? or 29.?. As a high school player, Jenkins is definitely better. He impacts the game more. Brewer didn't have much around him his senior year either (since Ferguson had already graduated the previous year) and like Jenkins had lots of freedom to do as he wished. Brewer had lots of big games, but he didn't pop for 50 on a regular basis like Jenkins does. And Brewer did not defend in high school like he did at Florida. Corey was depended on to score so much that he - like Jenkins - took a few possessions off on defense. Now, that doesn't mean that I think Jenkins will reach the level that Brewer is at (a lottery pick playing in the NBA). The four inches of height difference and Brewer's length and ability to defend players so well have played a big role in getting him to where he's at. Brewer scored points at Florida, but on his best season, he only averaged 12 or 13 per game. It is/was perceived that Brewer had/has major upside. That's a big reason why he was a lottery pick. Those two national championships didn't hurt that either. Good luck to both guys. They both seem like super young men.
  15. No chance. Good luck in Class A though. I think you'll win it there too.
  16. Bri, a very accurate statement in that Kelli Reed has an excellent bball IQ and does what's best for her team to win. Solid player. News flash...Cookeville is going nowhere but home quickly in the region. Keep basking in the glow of those wins though. They are quality wins, but it doesn't mean you'd win Class AAA. Upperman would beat CR because they're so much better at the guard spots. CR would junk Upperman defensively, but CR would struggle to play at Upperman's pace. Dyer would limit the big girls somewhat, and CR would just have no answer for Davis. Rogers is a much better coach than McWilliams, so he'd try to slow the pace to keep his squad in it. Upperman wins by at least 10 though. Hey that impressive 52-10 record against Upperman doesn't mean crap this year. I'm not that sold on Upperman either. I think McWilliams should have them playing at a higher level than they are. Sloppy play will cost you gold in the end. But Upperman would still handle CR by 10 or so. The game is just played much faster/quicker at the higher levels. Unless they've grown during the season, Phillips and Heady are not more than 6-foot tall. They might be 5-11. Don't exaggerate. Where is Tasha playing college ball? You people go to all of your beloved CR and OS games and don't get out enough to see high-quality basketball. Those CR and OS programs are great. I have a lot of respect for the programs and those coaches. But to believe they're going to win the state in any classification this year is just living in your land of make believe. I've been to more than one CR game. CR didn't exactly beat up on Kentucky's best in the LIS tournament that they won. The LIS is a well-run and fun tournament to attend. It has a big feel to it. But I was told by people at the LIS that the best teams in Kentucky were 20 minutes up the road playing in a tournament at Greenwood High School in Bowling Green. Kentucky girls basketball isn't that good anyway. Again, I wish you all luck the rest of the way. The whole state wants JC, OS and CR to all be in Murfreesboro.
  17. We'll just have to disagree, and I'll have to be ignorant in all of you Lady Buffalo faithful's minds. Do you people attend every CR game and every OS game? Come on now, do you really believe CR would beat Upperman or Marshall County...much less Wilson Central? I see AAA Cumberland County and AA Stone Memorial on the CR schedule. Where is Wilson Central, Shelbyville, etc.? Camp doesn't mean crap. What was said was they wouldn't win AA and wouldn't be at the top of AAA. I never said they couldn't compete in those classifications. They'd win their fair share in either of those classes this year, but they wouldn't be getting any gold in my opinion. Good luck to the Lady Buffalo faithful. It has to be wonderful living in that undefeated fantasy land. Don't let Jim rob you of another title.
  18. CR is the class of Class A, but CR would not win AA nor even be near the top of AAA. It's a faster game with bigger and better athletes.
  19. I hate to see the girls she's driving by then. They must be statues. I have no doubt that Kelli Reed is a wonderful young lady, and I believe that she is a quality basketball player in Class A. She is surrounded by players who take care of her too, and she takes care of them. It's why they're the best team in Class A. They should win the state title. I wish them the best of luck. However, Reed doesn't have to do a lot. Lowe exclusively handles the ball. Green is the primary defender and also shoots it relatively well, and the post players to a great job of kicking the ball out to Reed. Reed shoots it better than anybody in Class A probably. However, she is a standstill shooter. She not like many women's college basketball players who can shoot a pull up jump shot. I haven't seen her be able to dribble much at all. If she's driving in and getting pretty good shots as you say, it's probably taking one to two dribbles past a defender who was running out to the three-point line at her in order to shoot some 12-footer. The reason for my reply was not to tear down Kelli Reed. It was to address what I perceived as ignorance that was posted earlier in the thread in regard to Reed being a Miss Basketball finalist. She's just not in that class of players. I don't care who scores the points, the best two players that Clarkrange has is Phillips and Heady. And yes, Reed passes well due in large part to her height. How often is she guarded by a girl taller than 5-8. I'm saying that is rarely the case. When you can stand out along the three-point line, see over defenders and make passes to good post players, it's not that difficult. But it's a credit to her for being able to make those passes. Not every 6-foot girl can do that. I've watched more basketball than you know, and it's a lot more than just paint-by-numbers Class A basketball. I don't claim to be an expert. I'm just expressing my opinion, as you are. Reed's limited game and below average foot speed is what's going to prevent her from being able to play college ball at a very high level. Rogers coaches players to succeed in his program. And he does it well. It's why they will likely have eight gold balls soon. Reed is going to end up at a junior college or a very small school (a Division II or Division III or a desperate NAIA program). She just can't move well enough to keep up at that level. Scoring isn't everything, but it certainly helps. Best of luck to Kelli and to Clarkrange. Laken is really coming on strong from what I hear. Watch out.
  20. Are you people serious? Kelli Reed even in the running for Miss Basketball. Come on. All she does is shoot the basketball incredibly well. But she does do that incredibly well. She can't dribble. She passes over defenses because she's 6-foot tall, but that is a credit that she is able to pass relatively well. But she benefits because defenses honor Heady and Phillips. They look for her spotted up at the three-point line. How often does she dribble in to the basket for a shot? She'll be lucky to even play small-college basketball if her foot speed doesn't improve. She's a good Class A player. She would not be near as effective in Class AAA, because she couldn't get open. And she's not a terribly good defender either. She'll get a state championship ring, and Coach Rogers utilizes her well. But she's not even close to being one of the top players in the state. She must have had a really good game on Saturday though. Congrats to her and Clarkrange on the success and best of luck the rest of the way.
  21. LA has underachieved because Smith doesn't make them play any defense. If it seemed they played good defense against Jackson County, it's probably because it was a slow pace and thus minimal scoring. Also, LA matches up very well with JC athletically. Jackson County is not exactly an offensive juggernaut this season either. I'm sure that Brown had his girls slow it down in order to control tempo. LA plays a full-court, pressing style that relies on gambling, not on playing sound defense. You can press in order to try to force teams' hands or you can press to simply gamble, hoping it results in some easy baskets. LA presses in that gambling style, hoping for the easy baskets....and no, it's not the same thing. LA doesn't work hard enough defensively to put consistent pressure on the basketball. They're athletic and decently skilled. They're capable of being better than they've been. If they don't play any better defense than what they have been the rest of the way, H-O-G-E-Y-E will be talking about next year sooner than it wants to do so. Best of luck to LA.
  22. Twist it however you want to do so, but it was not Station Camp's best game. I'm not banking on Station Camp ever beating Livingston Academy this season, but Station Camp did not play very well based on what I saw. Station Camp missed makeable shots, had numerous turnovers and didn't play very good defense. It's crazy to say when he scored 51 points, but I don't even believe that Jenkins played his best game. He forced more shots than normal and just was not as efficient as he has been in some earlier games. Johnson, Payne, Kohler, etc. had better step up their game if they hope to make a nice postseason run. They must be assertive and efficient on the offensive end, and Station Camp has to rebound much better than they did on Saturday. Livingston looked extremely balanced in the game's early stages, and they did a good job of trying to limit Jenkins' touches early on. Livingston needs to play better defensively as well though. They gave up 76 points to a Station Camp team that has one legitimate scorer. Station Camp had lots of shots that could have been converted, but many of those were missed by wide margins. A good and smart offensive team will take advantage of that at some point down the line. Best of luck to both teams.
  23. Jenkins is by far the more polished player as a high school senior, and he's going to considered better because the obvious thing that most people notice is the fact that he is putting up a ton of points for his team. Jenkins is no doubt the better scorer, though his game still needs improvement. He doesn't handle the ball very much or very well. He's a catch and shoot guy, or will take one dribble and either get to the rim or pull back for the jumper. Brewer had to take a lot more shots to get his points. Brewer's defensive ability was light years ahead of where Jenkins' is. The similarity is that both had little support around them. That freedom got both of them a lot of attention. I would anticipate Jenkins being a McDonald's All-American, as was Brewer. I have no doubt that Jenkins can be really good at Vanderbilt. The question is his height. Can he be as effective shooting the ball at the next level when the other SEC teams may very well run a 6-7 kid at him with long arms to try to limit his looks. Jenkins will still get his shot off because of his release point. However, it's different shooting over a 6-2 kid in high school as opposed to a 6-7 kid with length in college. I hope Jenkins is unfazed and tears it up. The other thing that was way more in Brewer's corner rather than Jenkins is the fact that Brewer had way more upside entering college than does Jenkins. Jenkins will get better. Nobody doubts that. However, Brewer made huge strides each year, and if this current knee injury isn't a major setback in his development, he may still continue to drastically improve in the NBA. Will Jenkins play in the NBA? Who knows the answer to that question. Nobody can tell that for sure at this point. People can only say that they feel that he is capable of reaching that level. Very few get that opportunity though. Brewer is 6-8 or 6-9. Jenkins is 6-4 or 6-5. That's a major difference. However, people don't understand just how well Jenkins shoots the basketball. His right hand may get him there.
