  2. Just my two cents but, 1) what fans want should not be of high concern in high school athletics, what is best for student athletes should. 2)You should not base what is best for a sport by how it will effect the small percentage that is good enough to move on to the next level, (I have coached around 200 hundred kids and have only had a hand full that recieved attention from college coaches) 3) if you compare schools with basketball and wreslting small schools have the largest difference, I do believe a split which would encourage opportunity for small schools to compete will allow for that difference to become smaller. 4) but if you split small school and large school form a 32 man bracket to a 24 and 8 man bracket that does not grow anything it just splits it. In our region small schools recieved 6 bids to go to the state tourny, which left 50 spots for big schools, if we go to a 24/8 bracket the large schools in an already enormous region will lose 14 spots while the small schools will only gain 8 spots (not likely going to cause that much growth) I do not know the answer, just curious but how many teams did Georgia have pre and post split. Did it result in more kids benifiting and participating in the sport of wrestling, if so I'm for it. And btw I don't coach to stroke my ego by adding trophies or medals I do it because I want to see young kids grow into young adults and I think this sport like no other allows for that growth, and anything that get MORE KIDS from this generation out of the house, off the couch, or off the street Im for it.
  3. The problem I have with stalling is how inconsistant it is called. And to say there is no difference in 103lbs vs. 285 is in my opinion a little off. It is one thing to take a "risk" and shoot on a 103 lbs kid that might outweigh you by two or so lbs vs shooting on a kid that might outweigh you by as much as 70 lbs. yes I know there are moves like outside singles one can do to lower the risk but it is still not the same. what bothers me most is when both kids are stalling nobody is working for an advantage and the ref seems to pick which wrestler to call for stalling. my heavy was wrestling in a match that personally I thought neither wrestler was working for increasing an advantage, but my wrestler took two shoots to the opponents 0. The opponent constantly worked an arm bar that was NEVER used to attempt a score (which to me should be considered stalling) when I questioned the ref on what he saw to merit stalling on just one wrestler (an honest question) his answer was very elementary school immature. A kid has worked for four years and he sees something in a match to call, he should at least be able to explain to the coach why he choose one wrestler over the other. If BOTH kids are stalling hit them both or hit neither, the idea of one kid stalling "more" than the other is ridiculous. Both wrestlers have the same responsablitly to work to score. BTW I don't want to sound like I'm taking anything away from the kid that beat mine, hats off and great work..just a little upset at how the calls were mad.
  4. like i said in an ealier post, seeding the state would not be hard. All you would have to do is seed the region champs first (just 8 kidsagainst each other) then the second place kids are seperated to the other half bracket and seeded against each other (this would be seeding 4 kids against each other) then the 3rds from region will be placed in the other quarter bracket in the same half bracket as the kid that finished 2nd in their region (this will be seeding two kids against each other) then the fourth place kids from region should have one spot for them to fit in. This is not difficult and should be done. The kids deserve it.
  5. First start with region champs only (8 kids), but this would be the hardest round Criteria- 1) state medalist (last years finish, number of times etc) 2) how many times have you been a state qualifier 3)any clear head to head 4) coaches vote (the coaches that qualify for state duals can go (16 coaches), but you can't vote for your own kid) Second seperate the region runner ups opposite their region champ in half brackets. This means you will be seeding 4 kids against each other. Then use the criteria above. Third seperate the 3rd place finishers from region champs half bracket then seperate them from their 2nd place quarter bracket then use criteria from above (would only be seeding against 2 kids per half bracket) Finally place 4th place region placers in the half bracket slot away from their region champ. I think this would be real easy the only difficult part would be seeding the region champs. I know everyone is happy about the double elim. (me too) but I think we can still make it a better tourney still.
  6. thanks! I'm proud of how our kids did in the first half of the season hope we keep the ball rolling. I think that you probably had the top three right though looking at individual tournament strength(I think we are a better dual team that indi)but I definately think we can be in the mix. Also I think Eagleville and Montgomery Central could make a splash. I'm more familiar with Eagleville and if they get favorable brackets that have kids that could make deep runs and rack up some team points.
  7. what was the toughest weight class (d1) in the first half of the season. 125 would probably get my vote.
  8. I'm extremely proud of Jason, he has been 2nd string for most of the year took advantage of his opportunity and wrestled a great tournament. I could be wrong but I believe Jason did not give up an offensive point in either his simi or finals match. In the finals he started with a takedown, gave up 4 points for 3 consecutive locked hands, cut the kid to bring the match to 4-5 got another takedown, cut to bring it to 6-6 then hit the headthrow to win. Like I said I could be a little off and if so I don't mind if someone can correct it. Again I am really proud of Jason, he represented Siegel well this weekend. Now if he can just handle his nerves a little better and fix the locked hands : )
  9. Generally when we have quads they finish only about 30 min later than tris depending on which teams are involved....there is 3 rounds of wrestling either way, sometimes things happen to drag it on, but that happens in the tris too. I wish that the J.V. or Freshman level was good enough to do double tris meaning varsity tri on one mat and J.V./Frosh on the other...As far as seniors I think Colby Rasavong will have a special year this year along with David Hayes and Pennycuff, Tyler Thomas and Schultz also have potential they both have won best wrestler awards and Championships at various tourneys they just haven't had very many breaks at the Region Tourney.
  10. There is a quad tonight at Siegel. 5:00pm weigh-ins, wrestling to start by 6:00. Beech, Glencliff, FRA Possible match up between two ranked wrestlers: Jonathan Roberts (beech) and David Hayes (Siegel)
  11. Siegel High School will be hosting a dual tourney on Jan 15th. The format will be a 6 team dual everyone wrestles 5 matches and goes home. This will go very quickly and everyone will be guarenteed 5 matches. If you are interested email me Coach Ramsey at ramseyl@rcs.k12.tn.us Thanks
  12. Yeah, but my thing is not that wrestling should be different than football or basketball but the same. If they would have took the same approach with wrestling as they did with football (geographic regions) it would have helped lower the budget and increase the sport. Instead they moved wrestling in the opposite direction of what the were doing with the bigger revenue sport. I understand wrestling is in the caboose (sp?) of the train, but they should at least get to travel in the same direction.
  13. Something that strikes me as odd, why is it that TSSAA shifted and lowered football regions (highest revenue sport that travels 5 times a year) to save money on travel etc, and then took wrestling (one of the lowest revenue sports that often travels at least 12 to 14 times a year after pre and post season tourneys) and increased both number of teams and distance between them. Seems like there could be better options that could decrease the cost and possibly increase the competition that could grow the sport.
  14. Does anyone know what date the MBA middle tennessee scheduling meeting will be on?

    Save 103

IMO the one thing that would help grow the sport the most is creating a structured J.V. / Freshman system and a weight class that is going to be filled mainly from Freshmen are taking kids off of what could be a dedicated freshmen team to fill varsity weight classes. Freshmen and J.V. tournaments are often few and far between (or are so far away you just can not fiscally do it) and exhibition matches are a blind draw at best. Creating Weight classes that support the growth of independent Freshmen teams would help grow the sport. Freshmen / J.V. teams could have a different set of weights starting around 90lbs.

    Save 103

There is a difference when counting underclassmen between Frosh and Sophs...In this year's DI 103 we had 16 freshman, 14 sophs and Jr's, 0 seniors but we actually had 2 8th graders. I don't think a high school varsity sport should have a situation where there are more 8th graders than Sr's.... Then looking at the jump to 112 you have 6 freshmen and 8 seniors the rest being made up of Soph and Jrs which is more what a varsity sport should look like.
  17. I like option A. I think one of the problems with growing the sport now is the lack of Frosh and J.V. teams and I feel that the current weight structure esp. 103 is detremental in developing full time Frosh and J.V. teams. Teams have trouble finding 103's and when they do they are usually starters on the varsity. This year I believe there were only 4 upper classman wrestling in the 103 weight division at state. A varsity sport should try to get as many upper classman on the mat as possible. Of course there will still be a frosh here and there that can and will do really well regardless of the weight classes like Boykins (171) and I believe Bruner would have done well at 110 as well as 103, but I believe that you structure the sport to have successful upperclassmen and encourage Frosh teams and J.V. teams to grow.
  18. I believe at the moment that Tullahoma and Blackman have secured the top two spots in their district and will wrestle next friday at Tullahoma for the district championship. (as mentioned earlier) As for the other district Mt. Juliet has defeated Cookeville, Siegel 33-31, Oakland, and I believe Lebanon which would put them in first place. Cookeville is (I believe currently) in 2nd place and will wrestle Siegel next Thursday 21st at Siegel. Siegel also will wrestle Lebanon tonight and Oakland on the 26th at Siegel. If Cookeville beats Siegel they are 2nd, if Siegel beats Cookeville, Lebanon, and Oakland they will be 2nd. I'm not sure how Lebanon and Oakland have done so they could also be in the running...
  19. All that time and dedication and he could not teach you how to spell his name. His firing is closer than we think Ha, funny...can't believe I didn't catch that before I posted, I was always a better wrestler than speller anyways : ) maybe if I had him as a teacher in the classroom I would be better in that arena as well!!!!
  20. I wrestled for Coach Brey in high school and would not trade my experiences and the lessons I've learned from him for anything. There is a saying that "if you truly care for someone you will tell them what they NEED to hear not what they WANT to hear regardless of how it might effect the way they feel about you." Coach Brey cares enough about his kids to tell them exactly what he thinks they need to hear and he is not afraid to ruffle feathers and be the "bad guy" if that is what it takes for his kids to have success.
  21. There is a difference in TSSAA rules and school rules, TSSAA says that a student must pass 5 classes/credits for YEAR....Sounds like Indy has a school rule of classes passed for the semester. In which case he would be o.k. wrestling J.V. matches because he is tech. eligible according to TSSAA...----no violation.
  22. "I would just like to thank Coach Ramsey for the invite." The pleasure was all mine and it means a lot to me when quality programs like Independence, Rossview, and Antioch will travel to our place....All three teams were extremely well coached... The only thing I dislike about quads is not getting a chance to see all of the matches, as a fan I would have loved to see Indy and Rossview mix it up... I will be glad when the weight issues (weight management plans) settle themselves and for Indy's 130 that wrestled exhibition, wow..he looked really good...
  23. Yes, but as a coach I don't to go into a region individual tournament without having the chance for my kid to wrestle everyone in his weightclass. Again, I think if they did individual district t'ments to qualify for regions it might be different, but they don't. So with 18 dates, 14 minus t'ments, I have to try to schedule 20 something teams, or go into seeding meetings where nobody has wrestled each other. I've been involved with those and it does not go well.
