  1. Haven't heard anything like this, but anyone patterning themselves after what was done at RHS last year needs to be fired. That was the biggest boondoggle ever. From what I've heard since then it was just a bunch of lies and truth bending so that the principal could hire the person she wanted. Not a very professional way to do things. With that said, I don't think that's the Indy situation...but I could be wrong. I thought RHS was a class place before last year.
  2. Any staff shake ups in metro this year? Everybody seems to talk a lot about head coaches. What about assistants?
  3. How long has it been since Smith actually coached in metro? He wasn't a head coach was he?
  4. From Burro Ball on the RW thread "I agree that HHS football has a distinct advantage over other MNPS schools by having open enrollment status for students. I have never denied this. As I understand it, HHS has been required to have open enrollment due to their being the only MNPS high school with an International Baccalaureate program. The football program is one of the MANY areas HHS benefits as a whole from it's open enrollment status. However, also, HHS is the best high school in MNPS from an academic standpoint as well. Students want to come to HHS via open enrollment for many reasons. Absolutely, one of those reasons can be athletics. Though it is rarely only athletics. From th RW thread by BurroBall "Is it unfair? Probably, because HHS is also a better school than other MNPS schools and therefore leaves little reason for any football players able to provide their own transportation to and from school to stay at an inferior school just because it's where they're zoned. In summary, HHS is the unofficial magnet school of MNPS except they have football too unlike the official magnets Hume-Fogg and MLK. All I have said is that HHS DOES NOT have a full roster or even two deep roster on offense and defense of thoroughbreds like people looking on from the outside like to suggest. Again, Maplewood, Stratford, Hunters Lane, Whites Creek, Antioch, etc. have their fair share of elite athletes and they do not win as consistently on the football field like HHS does. It still does take exceptional coaching to get those elite athletes to play together with discipline and as a TEAM. Conversely, HHS Boys basketball, as good as they are and have been in the past, are not as good on a consistent basis as teams like Maplewood, Whites Creek, Stratford, Hunters Lane, Antioch, etc. HHS football could have a WHOLE lot deeper roster if what is being suggested about the open enrollment at HHS as it relates to the football team was completely true. YES the speed for the 2008 HHS team was exceptional. No question! That is precisely how they compensated for their shortcomings in size and strength." Might want to rein in the horses there. The worst thing you can do is make emotional statements without fact checking first. Yes, Hillsboro is one of the better schools in Nashville, but nowhere close to a magnet. Just a hair better than the rest of the pack. I did do a little checking. Here's what I found for what are, sadly, 5 of the better metro schools. ACT scores: MLK-27.0, Hume Fogg-26.7 / Hillsboro-19.9, Overton-19.0, Hillwood-18.9, Antioch-17.8, Hunters Lane-17.4 Grad Rate: HF-99.5, MLK-97.4 / Hillsboro-81, Overton-79.1, HL-77.7, HWood-75.8, Ant-71.5 Suspension Rates:(% of student body) MLK-3.6%, HF-7.2% / Overton-26.7%, Hillsboro-31.6%, Antioch-34.8, Hwood--43.5%, Hunters Lane-52.1% If it walks like a metro school and quacks like a metro school, it must be a metro school. http://edu.reportcard.state.tn.us/pls/apex...80974563::NO:::
  5. Yes, they were loaded in 01 and 02. Not sure I'd say MHS was less talented. Again, I'm not arguing that Hillsboro's staff had nothing to do with them winning this year. My only point is that, compared to the other metro teams, they have an unfair advantage. The kids at Antioch live in Antioch, the kids at Stratford live in Inglewood, the kids at Overton live in Crieve Hall, the kids at Glencliff live in Woodbine. Where do the kids at Hillsboro live? Antioch, Woodbine, Crieve Hall, Inglewood, wherever they want to live. How many Hillsboro football players live in Green Hills?
  6. I can't speak for all of those teams, but I saw Antioch this year. Antioch's talent was a far cry from Hillsboro's. I also saw BA, MBA and Ensworth play this year. Hillsboro's talent was in, if not above, that category. The size of linemen in high school is not really an issue. Many teams have won big with smaller quicker linemen and that's exactly what Hillsboro had. Listen, I've said on here several times, I'm not trying to take anything away from what Hillsboro accomplished this year. I've been around high school football in this state for longer than I'd like to admit. Hillsboro was extremely talented this year. That's nothing to apologize for. However, there is no escaping the fact that metro has an incredibly uneven playing field right now. It's another in a long line of cases where decisions are made at the central office with not one shread of thought put into what it will mean for athletics. Hillsboro has a distinct advantage over the other metro schools. Not only are the other schools limited in who they can get, but they are losing players to Hillsboro and there is nothing they can do about it. Hillsboro was, essentially, a metro all-star team. It was also one of the fastest high school teams I've seen in a LONG time.
  7. To be honest, I'm not sure anyone, Ronnie Carter included, really understands this idiotic system. With that said, I have to agree with Spoon here. The way I understand it, in order to get an automatic berth you have to have at least 3 teams in your classification in your district. Otherwise, you have to be in the top 3 in the entire district to get an automatic. In this case since Hillsboro and Centennial are the only 5A's, so they will have to either finish in the top 3 in the region or get a wild card. So out of Bwood, Franklin, Indy, Centennial, Ravenwood, etc., they can only lose 2. Tough job ahead for the Burros.
  8. I don't know that I'd say overrated, but Hillsboro is definitely the easiest place in metro to win. It's basically a private school with the way the zones work. Not taking anything away from beating Maryville, but I can think of other coaches who could have done that with the kind of talent they had. Good talent makes good coaches of us all. I think Bear Bryant said that.
  9. He's had a couple of good years with one of the most talented teams in the state. Hats off for beating Maryville, but I don't think he could do what he did at Hillsboro up there. Let's see what he does for a year or 2 when his talent isn't though the roof. OR isn't nearly as talented as Hillsboro was.
  10. I don't think a principal should necessarily "make a decision based on parental wishes", but keep in mind that the parents and boosters at a school like Ravenwood are what seperate them from others. From what I see in the stands on Fridays, a lack of parental/booster support is the big problem in places like metro (you could certainly tell the difference in the 2 sides of the Antioch-Brentwood game). I'm sure a lot of those guys would love to have what Ravenwood has in that department. Trust me when I say that the parents and boosters play a bigger role in making a program successful than the executive principal does and their wishes should, at least, be taken into consideration. Doesn't sound like this lady gave a hoot what anybody thought.
  11. I agree. Unless you are BA. /ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />
  12. Very true. Which is why BBT's comment about them falling into mediocrity is probably true. Rappy, I assume you are closer to this situation than me, who do YOU think Jennings and Becker and that bunch would favor if asked (which I'm sure they won't be)? Also, I should have said "according to news I got" in regards to the committee. I'm just reporting what I heard "from a guy who knows a guy".
  13. Let's keep a couple of things in mind here. I would never take anything away from state champion coaches and I definitely wouldn't take anything away from the team that knocked Maryville off, but comparing Antioch to Hillsboro is sort of like apples and oranges. From what I hear, HHS is open zoned and over half of their roster is out of zone. The talent at AHS is WAY down. I saw them play Brentwood and believe me, the days of LaMarcus Coker are a distant memory. I'm not even sure how they got that bunch into the playoffs.
  14. I talked to a good friend of one of those booster members you mentioned. Let me correct your statement. There WAS a search committee in place that WAS managing the interview process. It INCLUDED RHS administration, county AD, and 3 members of QB booster club to gain parent input. The best man for the job WOULD HAVE BEEN selected based on many criteria and input from the entire committee, had the principal not decided she disliked their input and dismissed them all. According to what I heard, the commitee you're talking about was vetoed and shown the door.
  15. Hadn't heard any numbers about 3 or 4, but if he's who I think he is then he's pretty close.
  16. I heard the 4th was another Metro guy...don't know who, though. Anybody know how many Metro coaches threw their hats in?
  17. I'd say the mother calling the paper to complain is pretty classless. I bet Coach Rector is pretty embarrassed about that one. He didn't sound like (in the paper) that he wanted anything to do with any of this. Good post CHS.
  18. I think Smyrna has the ability to beat them, but I predict that they show up with their tails tucked between their legs like they always do against Riverdale. I don't think Riverdale drubs them again, but Smyrna doesn't appear to have the mental block conquered.
  19. It looked to me like that was the idea, but the QB for AHS played as poorly as the RHS QB played well. He looked like he was running from imaginary pressure most of the game.
  20. What a game played between two well coached teams. I really thought turnovers would play a part in this one. I thought Ravenwood's Oline won the game for them. 88 for AHS had a decent game, but 80 was no factor. I really thought they'd get to RHS's QB more. If they had it might have been a different outcome.
  21. Not very good from what I saw (they missed an extra point on their 1st touchdown vs. Dickson), but their coverage and return game looked pretty good.
  22. White's Creek had as much talent as anybody around this year. There's one good coach on the WC staff - Richard Coure.
