This upcoming fall will be the last for APSU in the Pioneer Football League and I for one am glad. The PFL in football is a JOKE to put it nicely and APSU has realized this as well. In the fall of '06 the Governors will return to scholarship football and compete in the OVC with the likes of TSU, TN Tech, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois, Jacksonville State, Samford, UT-Martin, Murray State, and SEMO. Morehead State is also an OVC school, but I don't think that they are returning to compete in the OVC in football anytime soon  I realize that it is gonna take a few years to get the football program anywhere near respectability in this conference and that has shown the past two years as APSU has lost both years to OVC perennial doormat UT-Martin. How long will it take for the Govs to become competitive enough to challenge for an OVC football comnference title and make a trip to the Division 1AA playoffs???

We had about 100 old players show up for a fund raiser/reunion this past Friday and Saturday. I got to see some guys that I haven't seen in 25 years. There is alot of excitement about scholarship football coming back. There are 61 Freshmen coming in this fall. About 17 of these are from the Clarksville area.

well, the fact that APSU had a chance to win the game late in the 4th both the past 2 years is remarkable considering that apsu has no football scholarships.(2 years ago they missed and extra-point that would have sent the game to overtime.) As a former player, I wouldn't say that the PFL is a joke either, teams like Dayton, Morehead St., and Valpo had very good teams that could have competed well in the OVC the last two years. (Valpo even has a rec. who will prolly be signed to an NFL squad in the pre-season.) I have alot of friends there who will play there senior years in the OVC and i am excited for them, i hope they work hard and compete well in that conference.

The UTM-APSU game last year in Clarksville was at one time 31-7 in the 4th quarter. You honestly felt like that game was close??? ;);)

Now having said that I will tell you that you are right about the 2003 season opener that the two played in Martin. The Skyhawks led 21-7 in the 4th before losing their minds late in the ballgame. Austin Peay scored a touchdown, recovered an onside kick, and on a 4th down & short situation Martin stupidly left a corner on an island one-on-one and Curran burnt them deep. That made it a 21-20 game and APSU had a kicked miss the PAT. All of last year the Govs made a total of 2 FG's and they both came in the OT win against Davidson.

Dayton is the ONLY team in the Pissoneer Football League that could contend in the OVC. Valpo and Morehead State have shown flashes at times, but they both would get drilled in the OVC. In 2003 Valpo opened up their season at Murray State and lost 33-0. NEWSFLASH: the 2003 Murray State Racers finished behind Jacksonville State, SEMO, Samford, TSU, and Eastern Kentucky in the conference standings. They were tied in the final standings with Eastern Illinois that year and believe it or not they actually lost to TN Tech in 2003. The Golden Eagles were the worst team in the OVC that year finishing behind UT-Martin (who beat Tech on 10/01/03 to snap a 40+ game confernce losing skid). THAT WAS THE YEAR VALPO ACTUALLY WON THE PFL AND YOU ARE GONNA TELL ME THAT THEY COULD COMPETE IN THE OVC EVEN THOUGH THEY LOST TO ONE OF THE CONFERNCE'S WORST TEAMS THAT YEAR!!!

Being located so close to Clarksville and Nashville I'm here to tell you all the in time Austin Peay will be a solid D-1AA football team. Those first couple of years in the OVC are not gonna be pretty though folks and anyone who says any different is just kidding themselves thumb

O.k. i was mistaken on last years game with UTM. But i definatley agree that they're gona really struggle in 2006. heck, they're gona strugle in the Pioneer league next year, with the loss of almost every starter at DB and wide out. they will be depending on alot of freshman next year. But i have confidence that Coach McCray will get this team on the right track if given enough time. He is one of the classiest coaches i've been around. As for my boys at APSU, who i'll prolly be heading up to visit this weekend, good luck in your seasons to come and work hard as heck now. it would be a great thing if that group could come out and be competitive right away in 2 years.

Coach McCray is a very classy guy. In fact, it would really be hard to find a man with more class than Carroll McCray. Having said that, his teams over the past two years have definitely shown that at times they lack DISCIPLINE!!! The games last year at St. Joseph's (PA) and Jacksonville were hard to listen to from a guy who attends APSU and is a loyal friend of Governors athletics, especially men's basketball. I may be wrong here, although I highly doubt it, but I heard from a source that the reason the players came out flat at Jacksonville last year and had 50 hung on 'em was because players snuck out of the hotel the night before the game and went to a strip club. The guy who told me is a football player, whose name I will not reveal on here. Seeing as how APSU is located in Clarksville and is very close to Nshville, bringing in athletes that are good enough to play in the OVC will not be a problem at all. In order to be successful in the OVC, the Govs must find a way to become a more disciplined football team and not kill themselves with DUMB MISTAKES. Former offensive cordinator/offensive line coach Ken Jones is gone to Kenwood, which is a good thing seeing as how the team scored more than 14 points just one last year, so maybe the offense can become more diverse now and not be so darn predictable. Either way, I'll be in the stands this fall rooting like heck for the Govs and starting in '06 when we get back in the OVC I can't wait for the first time down the road when APSU wins the OVC and gets to host a first round D1AA playoff game in Clarksville. It should be one tough ticket that weekend folks.

all that you say is true, and i agree with you on everything. those players that snuck out, went out my good friends window who tried to talk them out of doing it. but the players involved are not coach mcray's "guys". there was a huge lack of discipline on that team, but for the most part, they have moved on out. getting a new offensive coordinater is also a very good move. but the move i like best is moving coach eastman to def. coordinater. he probably cares about his job more than any coach i've been around. he is a very diligent person and works very hard for the players. i respect him very much, and i know he won't be at apsu long because there are many opportunities ahead of him.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
