State Tournament Review

Here are some final takes from this year's baseball state tournament:

In Class A,

Cheers to:

*USJ and its seniors for ending great careers with a championship

*Halls for its first state appearance

*Harriman for its first state appearance

*Friendship Christian for igoring the hype about other teams and getting to the championship game

Boos to:

*The Harriman-USJ game atmosphere. Good thing there weren't two games

*Coach Dyer of USJ for his post-championship game comments about his winning the championship. Great coaches credit the kids. I challenge you to find a quote from Ernie Smith, Donny Joyner, Jimmy Carey, Tommy Pharr, or any number of successful coaches who put himself above the players. You won't.

In Class AA,

Cheers to:

*David Lipscomb and Coach Smith for another title and doing it with class.

*Pigeon Forge for a championship game appearance in their first trip to the Fling

*Harpeth for its first state appearance

Boos to:

*Pigeon Forge's lack of discipline. Unfortunately, the great season may be best remembered by the dugout incident in Memphis.

In Class AAA,

Cheers to:

*Houston for a championship despite being third or fourth down the list of favorites

*Overton for a great season and an unthinkable streak of wins

*All eight teams - what a quality tournament when Riverdale and Franklin don't win a game.

Boos to:

*None

In Division II,

Cheers to:

*Christian Brothers for their third title this decade

*Clark Wormsley of Webb for handling an unfortunate situation with class and not backing down from fighting for his team

Boos to:

*Coach Kelso for acting as if his pitcher did nothing wrong. If you rob a bank and no one sees you and the cameras were off, did you still commit the crime? Hopefully, this good baseball coach and his quality program were blinded by the championship game in this error of judgement.

Anyone is welcome to add more cheers or boos as long as we keep it respectful. Great season to all coaches and players and good luck next year. With new classifications for a lot of teams - it should be interesting.

There were, actually -- just not the same day. I agree, the atmosphere wasn't good at all.

And let me add the biggest boo of all to the group of Harriman fans chanting choker at the DCA pitcher in the 8th instead of cheering their own team for a miraculous comeback.

*Pigeon Forge's lack of discipline.  Unfortunately, the great season may be best remembered by the dugout incident in Memphis.

What happened there?
