Oliver Spring's Frank Johnson

Coach Johnson took over one of East Tennessee's worst programs in 1990. Before 1990, OS had only made the playoffs one time ( albeit just one year during there two years in Single A in 1988) since 1978. After a 2-8 campaign in AA after moving up from A in 1990, the Bobcats looked like the same ole AA team of the 1980's when there just three classifications and beating Wartburg was the highlight of the year. After improving to 4-6 in his second year in 1991, you could see a Bobcat team that was actually competitive against AA programs that OS had not been in the last 12 years or so as OS beat Harriman, Rockwood, and Loudon.

If you would have told Bobcat fans in 1990 that OS would be in the playoffs 3/4 of the remaining seasons up to 2005,, win region championships, beat Alcoa 5 times in the span, garner a 3-3 ( after friday nights game)record against Kingston since the rivalry has resumed, surpass Harriman and Rockwood programs, beat Lenior City three times in a row during that span, have numerous all state players at all positions, and become known as a very physical team regardless of classification, then most would have laughed at you.

However, what Coach Frank Johnson has done at Oliver Springs is nothing short of a miracle. After his worst season last year that was an anamoly at 1-9, he is guiding the Bobcats to a 4-0 record this year eyeing Kingston, Loudon, and Alcoa. The reality is teams look at OS as a pivitol game that typcially has an impact on their season in the region. Before 1990 in AA, OS was the homecoming game for most road games. My how times have changed.
