Congratulations to the Colonial Heights Chargers on their Undefeated 2005 Middle School Football Season. Special thanks goes to WKPT AM 1400 and Scott Gray for their live broadcast of the championship from Colonial Heights Middle School. Also a special thanks to TriCitiesSports.com for providing local coverage of the game. A team that sets a school record 9-0 season, and also posts a 32-1 record over the past four years deserves the press. I guess the local newspapers were somewhere in SW Virginia last night. On the bottom of this post is the article on the Chargers' Championship from TriCitiesSports.com, the source for sports in the Tri-Cities area. www.tricitiessports.com

Congratulations also to Vance Middle School on a successful season. Vance was one of the toughest teams the Chargers have faced, along with hard hitting TA Dugger and Bluff City.

KINGSPORT - The Colonial Heights Chargers captured the first ever Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association Region I Championship Thursday night, defeating Vance Middle School, 28-14.

The Chargers defeated T.A. Dugger, 44-6 last week to reach the championship, while Vance took down Science Hill in the other semi-final game.

The first half of the championship was mainly a defensive battle that saw both teams turn the ball over twice. Vance fumbled the opening kickoff and later, after intercepting a Colonial Height's pass at their own 4-yard line, fumbled again. It would take only one play for Ty Garvin to bust in from the 1-yard line for the opening score. Seth Watterson's conversion run made it 8-0.

Colonial Heights took the kickoff in the third period and ground out a 71-yard drive that ended with Watterson scoring from 5 yards out. Clint Phillips tacked on the conversion for a 16-0 lead. Watterson was quick to see that credit was given to the offensive line.

"All the credit goes to our line, they put in the best work all year,'' he said. "They pulled it out and we were able to get around the outside."

Phillips would later add two more touchdowns on runs of 49 and 21 yards respectively. Both conversions would fail.

Vance tried to mount a comeback with two scores in the fourth period. Quarterback Taylor Harmon hit a streaking Tyler Greene for a 34-yard touchdown pass, Harmon followed that up minutes later with a 1-yard dive. Matt Pendleton scored the lone conversion. .

"That's as good a team as we've played all year," said Colonial Heights head coach Mike Hoover. "They got some guys that are really good. Either team could have won we just happened to get some breaks."

One reason for the breaks was the strong running of Watterson and Phillips. Watterson ended the night with 22 carrries for 171 yards, while Phillips touched the ball four times for a whopping 103 yards. Yardage of that type means that someone is carrying out big blocks up front. Two of those clearing the way were Caleb Anderson and Seth Wright.

On the defensive side Ashton Zanoni, Ethan Long, and Sam Conaway made things rough all night for Viking running backs.

The win capped off a perfect 9-0 season for the Chargers and gives the school a 32-1 record over the last four years.

"It feels really good to go undefeated," said a gleaming Watterson. "Our year (class) has never won a championship, we've been undefeated up till the end every year. We finally won one and it feels really good."
