size does appear to matter

It seems enrollment does matter. Of the 4 left in 1A 3 came down in classification and barely made 1A enrollment the 4th Jo Byrns has almost 300 (293) so they are large also. Hampton 393. TC 366. Union City 391. There goes the arguement size doesn't matter. It does!

(293) Large compared to whom?

I disagree with this argument and I can tell you why. First of all at Hampton if a kid wants to play he is given that chance so everyone you see on the side line is there because they want to play, not because they are the best athlets that the school has to offer. Yet all three teams that we have played in th palyoffs had many more players dressed out than we did. Sunbright, Harriman and yes even Coalfield.

Yea, I bet Trousdale has the least amount of players than any left. Count'em.

The only team we have played so far with less players is Temple. Size DOESN"T matter. PERIOD. Quality and Coaching is everything. PERIOD.

The only ones that will deny this factor is the bigger class 1A schools. It is only common sense that a school with 350 or so students will have a lot more depth in their program. Sure they can dress out a smaller team but that doesn't change the facts. The TSSAA should have left the enrollment numbers where they were, by raising them they only replaced the private schools with another dominating factor, larger schools. There is no way that any school with less than 200 students can compete year after year on the state level with these bigger schools. Sure you will have the occasional outstanding team that will be the exception that will go to state.

When you have a school that has that many students, although they may field smaller numbers, they field a team with more depth, therefore they have fewer players that play both sides of the ball and that means less of a fatigue factor.

Sure coaching has some to do with it, but bigger schools mean more money to pay those better coaches with and give them the tools they need to be winners. A good coach at a smaller school is easily lured away because they often get frustrated trying to compete or plain economics, they need more money for their family.

waaaaa waaaa waaaa Do you need a tissue. Trousdale played 3a ball for 4 yrs and competed very well against those "bigger" schools, I think Portland had about 900 students, and 80 players, you didn't hear the Trousdale guys on here crying about it. They went out and let their playing do the talking. When they got beat they didn't get on here and say "well we should've lost, they have 900 students to pick from". Some of you guys look for any excuse to lose.

With your level of mentality and the class your coach has displayed I can fully understand an attitude like yours. By the way, don't you all have enough to do trying to make sure you can hide from the privates? Trousdale has two questions they will never be able to justify an answer to....... 1. Why they dropped from 3A to 1A? 2. Why they showed so little respect in beating a team like RBS 91-0? I'm sure you have your own version of each answer, you know the one that is like trying to sell a fridge to an eskimo. Your denial is only preceded by your arrogance.

Trousdale has about 26 dressing. KRP is looking for an excuse as to why South Pitt got beat thats all.

I haven't said anything about the size of the team it's the amount one has to chose from. It takes a fool that can't see if you were going to pick an army you would do better if you had 2000 to pick from than 1000. Some schools have less than 200 others near 400. The 400 has alot more choices than the 200. Why do you think they have classifications if they didn't I gurantee the ones saying this would be hollering if they had to play an enrollment of 800 so why can't the 200 fuss about the 400. How many dressed out has nothing to do with it. Riverdale could dress out their top 20 and tear yall and the rest of the 1A up. Because they had 1200 to pick those 20 from. This just makes sense. Surely they teach enough math in your school for you to grasp this.

We dropped to 1a to see how many crybabies were there, evidently there's a bunch. They split up the 3a region we were in(mostly local teams), why would we stay and have to drive 75-100 miles to play an away game? Why doesn't your team travel to the other side of the state every other Friday night. Open your eyes, fool. We DONT RUN from anyone, we DO RUN over them though. I'm 99% sure we asked THE ALMIGHT RIVERDALE for a game in 97-98, but they wouldn't schedule us, as for the reason, well you'd have to ask coach Rankin for that answer. We offered they refused. Oh yea you better check our records vs the privates, last night we beat a private school, and we are 15-2 against them all time. We played the privates every yr in the playoffs and loved it. The guys who say we ran, well they never got to play them privates cuz they couldn't get that far in the playoffs.

As I said....... you would try to sell a fridge to an eskimo. All the whining your coach did to get the biggest multiplier in the nation imposed on private schools and you want to call me a cry baby?........That is quite hilarious. As for the drop down, why not go to 2A..... Wait, I'll answer that for ya....... Alcoa to name one........ and oh yeah...... those privates your coach lead the way in removing from 2A. Your pitiful argument falls apart at every thread. It is so easy to predict and debunk your pitiful excuses I feel like I am having a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
