Well, I went and there was some Good softball played. I am a Waverly fan, thats why I went. So Waverly's games were pretty much the only ones I watched. Waverly first played David Lipscomb and won. Then played East Robertson and Gallatin. Both of those were lost by Waverly. I have two main reasons for writing this messege: There was Good softball played in the tourney and there was some Horrible officating. The Waverly vs. East Robertson and vs. Gallatin games were not the best but more then likey the worst officating I have seen. It was not throughout the game, but two game changing calls. (One in East Robertson and the other in Gallatin) I know people make mistakes but these officials were just plain Horrible in the in the two calls they made. Also after the games there were some fans "confronting" the officials. Just as the officials walked by some fans told them the call they made was horrible. The fans were not "hallering", cussing, making gesters or acting in "violance" towards the officials. They were just being "somewhat disgruntled" fans. After the calls they made anyone would have been "upset" over them. My point about the fans were the officials started to talk back to the fans as well as "somewhat" threaten the fans. I do know when you are an official and fans start giving you grief you dont "argue" back and make threats. I just think some of the officating was Horrible and some of the officials conducted themselves in an unacceptable manner after the game.

Good post. Being a father of a softball player whose team fell victim to THE MOST HORRIBLE CALL in Tennessee high school softball history at the state tournament, what you saw pales in comparison. Redneck and collusion would barely start to explain what we experienced. Consider what you saw as a "non event". :lol:

As the quality of High School softball continues to get better and better, the officiating has not been able to keep up. Very few umps have consistant strike zones and most seem to be fooled by a change up worse than the batter. :lol: as for the calls in the field............ :lol:

Jp, i heard about the game. He also said that the games were great, but the officiating was indeed horrible. I was at a little league game this weekend (softball) and the officiating there was horrible, nothing like this was cause it didnt matter as much. But HS games tend to be getting ruined by officials. There are a select few that can call good. We usually get those, or at least try. There ate gonna be complaints in all sports about officiating, but sometimes there should be a line drawn...

i was at this tournament and watched the games you are talking about. yes, the umps may have missed calls. they always do, but it was far from the worst i have seen. as the pitching gets better it gets more and more difficult to call it. i must say that as an observer i was extremely troubled by the fans and the way they were confronting the umpires. i did feel it was completely inappropriate and absolutely does not change anything. the umps should never acknowledge the crowd and they were wrong to do so, but again as an observer of these games i thought the waverly coaches were terrible sports and heard them make some comments that have no place around high school girls. and while we can all agree that the quality of umpires is not the best, i hope we can all make the best effort to be good examples for our children. it is never ok to yell at or personally attack someone else. i have voiced my distaste for calls before, we all have, but i would never consider waiting at a door waiting for the umps to come out after a game. what does that do? i will tell you that it absolutely horrifies the girls. they don't think it's cool and neat to see their dad get thrown out of a park or have the police escort them out. maybe we can find a productive way to get changes with the umps. some way to make sure that high school ball gets the most experienced ones on the field.

even with these unfortunate calls, i saw several very good softball games saturday and that was nice.

bballmom10, I have to agree with you for the most part. Though I think the Waverly coaches conducted themselves in a fine manner. Ofcourse they "put some pressure" on the umps after the calls that were "Horrible". Any coach would do that or I atleast hope they would. The coaches that were from Waverly did not do anthing that would make them terrible sports. I agree "we the fans" may have been somewhat out of hand, that comes with every sport. When it comes to a tournament and it being high school ball, I see it as being competiative or "serious". Though in the same point I see it as a sport. (something done for fun or enjoyment) Something does need to be done about the officiating to prevent future problems.

I don't know what Waverly coach you are referring to, but I am the head coach at Waverly and I know for a fact I never said a negative word to any umpire that worked our games this weekend. Did I question a call when the umpire didn't know the rule? You better believe I did, but once both umpires said the call was going to stand then in my eyes it was over. When you coach for a long period of time you learn to let things go because when it's over it's over. As a matter of fact I talked to all three umpires at the end of the tournament. They all realize fans are going to get highly involved and the one even admitted he understood why our fans were so upset after he "blew the call that cost Waverly the game" People are competitive and sometimes they do get to riled up, but before you start putting words in other people's mouth please make sure you are correct. This is our profession and we do try our best to set good examples. Gallatin put on a great tournament and we had 3 great ballgames this weekend against 3 good schools. All of the schools we competed against had quality coaches and players who were a joy to play against.

      OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.

      They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.

      The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.

      I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
