Melrose spanks Ridgeway

Melrose beat Ridgeway 14-3. in their highly anticipated 15-minute Jamboree matchup.

Melrose put together 2 impressive drives that led to 2 quck TD's. It then put in the impotent 2nd team, for the remaining 8 or 9 minutes, and managed to hold off Ridgeway.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some brief observations on Melrose:

1) The new coach has opened up the offense, with a return to the Spread Offense. The offense is now wide open, with an emphasis on the pass.

2) Mr. Elusive, Courtney Madison leads the way (as he did 2 years ago) at QB. His experience showed, as he made MUCH better decisions and threw the ball with greatly improved accuracy.

3) The RB is definetly no Craig Cooper and, in fact, appears very average.

4) The defense seems a bit weaker than the past 2 years, though it picked off 2 passes and managed to keep Ridgeway out of the end zone.

5) Melrose is still very penalty-prone, and has no kicker this year.

Observations on Ridgeway:

1) Ridgeway's offense managed to move the ball in spurts, mainly on roll-out passes, but interceptions doomed it's drives. The running game is weaker vs last year.

2) The defense played the run well, got a decent pass-rush but simply could not contain QB Madison.

3) The secondary needs a lot of work. It got shredded like swiss cheese and gave up big-play after big-play....Great FG kicker.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In summary, it's a bit premature to say just how good Melrose and Ridgeway will be this year. Both teams, however, appear to be a bit weaker (overall) vs last year. Again, it's just pre-season. The jury is still out...

TraderB,

Thanks for the breakdown. A couple of questions:

Did Melrose attempt to kick an extra point last night?

Also, what was the ratio of pass to run in the game.

On of the kickers last year was a sophmore and should be back. I will check on his status.

I am really looking forward to the MUS game. That will be a good gauge as to how we have transitioned under Coach Alexander. I am very happy to see the offense open up. Coach Alexander has a great offensive mind and we should sharpen on that side of the ball as the season progresses.

OMW,

Melrose did not attempt any extra points. It simply went for 2pts each time, converting on one of them. It is for this reason--I ASSUMED that they do not have a kicker.

The ratio of pass to run appeared to be about 4 or 5 to 1.

QB Courtney Madison is clearly the focus of Melrose's offense (and for good reason). In a word, this kid is simply ELECTRIFYING! It's worth the price of admission just to see him in action. Wow!

Madison's uncanny ability to break-down and embarass defenses via run or pass is Michael Vick-like. No exaggeration. His obvious improvement in decision-making and passing accuracy makes him more of a game-changer, this year, than he was 2 years ago...if you can imagine that. Only time will tell if his amazing exploits will prove to be a thing of consistency.

In addition, Madison's receivers did an excellent job of breaking off their routes and coming back to the ball once Madison started scrambling (Madison eventually found an open receiver -- every single time). I don't think that they dropped a single pass, all night long! Remarkable.

OMW, I agree--the MUS game should shed more light on the strengths and weaknesses of this year's Melrose squad. Nontheless, here's one thing that is virtually guaranteed: MUS' defensive secondary is going to have it's hands absolutely full.

If Ridgeway is weaker, then they will lose game 1. Henry County is better and ready to go! Melrose we will be seeing you around the 3rd round of the playoffs!
