McCallie Results:

1st place - Soddy Daisy

2nd place - Parkview

3rd place - Baylor

Congratulations to a great Soddy team. What a great way to win it, going down to the the winner of the overtime 215 finals match. Lettner, and the whole Soddy team pulled it off. Tyler Roberson also looked strong against a good Olsen from Walton.

Congrats to Soddy and all the local champs: Manley and B. Johnson and W. Young and McCroskey and Roberson and Lettner and Sliger. 7/14 ain't too shabby.

Things I'll remember...

  • The Soddy/Parkview 215 final, during which it's announced that the winner clinches the team title for his team... and it goes to overtime! Burst by Lettner triggers Soddy celebration.

  • Speaking of Soddy, Roberson and Olsen in the 189 final. Olsen is a defending Ga. 5A state champ and two-time state runner-up and had pinned within 30 seconds in each match of the tourney til the finals. But Roberson gets him. Wow.
  • That said, nothing tops the double-overtime thriller in the 140 finals between Will Young of McCallie and Jesse Miller of Parkview. Just emerging from that crushing bracket was impressive, but having two dervishes so talented AND aggressive is a rare treat. And they didn't disappoint, 5-3 Young.
  • In fact, the best fifteen minutes of the weekend was that quarter-hour when the three 140 place-matches were going on side-by-side-by side: W. Young/Jesse Miller for 1st, Bell/Lanham for 3rd, and Winesburg/Konz for 5th. All three won by the Chattanooga wrestler, incidentally.
  • Welcome to the big stage, Alex. It's something to see an 8th grader winning big tourneys with technique and poise--and some guts in that third period.
  • Seeing Jeff Francis, Demetrius Johnson, and John Michael Simpson lose matches by a combined 31 points inside of an hour of each other. You could live awhile and not see that again.
  • Dan Waddell doesn't often look mortal on the mat, but he did for a few minutes today. Already looking forward to December 27th.
  • Hats off to Mikey Fuller for sucking all the air out of the room for a stunned moment by catching Joe Young and sticking him half a minute into their match. For all those eager to see a Ben Johnson/Young matchup, you'll have to wait.
  • Reed Doster doesn't get some of the pub that some of his teammates have gotten, but he deserves his props. Today he beat Jarriet Toney soundly, 7-3, for his second victory over him this season. Then he takes the great Kelly Felix to the wire, down 3-2 with 10 seconds left in the match before giving up two points trying to make something happen.

Finally, let me say I'd pay my five bucks to see a Soddy/Parkview dual meet. Those are two great teams.
