Upper East Tennessee radio coverage

I've browsed the boards for a couple of months and just now decided to join.

I'd like to get some other's opinions on radio coverage of high school sports.

Each year I listen to the Arby's Classic and swear to not listen again. WJCW does an excellent job with their coverage. Also, Bill Meade is a very good play-by-play guy. I've also heard him do Science Hill games.

I know that it would require a lot of work, but I would love to hear Bill do the games by himself. Paul Overbay is, without a doubt, the WORST I've ever heard. Each year I try to listen to the Classic, but find myself tuning it out, simply because of Paul's hijacking of the broadcast.

He has ~ 5 or 6 phrases that he uses ad-nauseum. Here's a partial list(feel free to add to the list):

"HE ROARS, SOARS, AND SCORES"

"THAT'S DOWNTOWN LEROY BROWN" (I believe his incorrect reference is to the Seattle Supersonics shrpshooting guard from the late 70's "Downtown" Freddy Brown.

I can't recall the other's, but I'm sure others can peg these without any problem.

I actually heard him(Paul) doing play-by-play during one of the games, and he wasn't terrible. His play-by-play kept him from carrying on too much. I shutter at the thought of some of the out-of-town fans listening to these broadcasts, and thinking that this is the best we can do. I've heard some of the other WJCW/WKPT announcers that do a great job. Also, I've heard Greeneville's Bobby Rader, and he is top notch.

All I can say is, I'd hate to be Bill Meade having to listen to 25 or 26 games of this.

Bobby is the best

I agree that Bill Meade does an excellent job doing play-by-play. Its hard to believe that he sometimes does around 9 games in a row during the Arby's.

But I have to disagree with you saying that Paul Overbay is terrible. I actually like hearing his sayings, as do MANY others. I have actually heard players ask someone who was not at the game, but listened to it on the radio, if Paul Overbay said one of his sayings when they hit a big shot.

I think the Arby's is the only time that Paul Overbay and Bill Meade do broadcast together anymore which is very unfortunate in my opinion.

I agree, Paul Overbay's sayings get old, it's the same thing over and over and over and it sounds like Bill Meade trys to ignore some of it when he is broadcasting. Overbay does a pretty good play-by-play but the other is quite annoying. I too listen at work and I turn it off sometimes. "As he flys right on by."

I can't believe that I forgot to mention that one. I only heard it about 50 times in one game.

He also got several plugs in for those wonderful "Chick-Fil-A HandSpun milkshakes".

I'm sure he's a great guy that loves the game, but there were probably a couple thousand at Viking Hall that love the game, who I don't want to hear on radio.

I agree that Meade seems to ignore much of the silliness that Overbay continues to spew. One poster mentioned that there are MANY that enjoy his sayings, but I have yet to meet them. I would even go so far as to say that I've heard several over the past couple of years call in to Meade's radio show and point out just how bad Overbay is. Meade obviously can't berate Overbay, but I wouldn't exactly say that he glowingly defends him either.

You are right about one thing. I have met Paul Overbay and he is an outstanding gentleman. But you are wrong about Bill Meade not defending him. I heard him cut a caller off the air once for belittling Paul. If Bill wanted to he could stop inviting him to call the games with him, after all he is the program director at WJCW. Obviously friendship means something to him. And for that I give him KUDOS.

The best, is Tom Taylor of 1320 WKIN for Dobyns-Bennett. He has won at least 1 Tennessee Broadcaster of the year or whatever it is called over every high school broadcaster in the state, as well as Bob Kestling (Tennessee) and Mike Keith (Titans).

There is no one that compares. If you don't believe me, tune in to AM 1320 if you are in or around Kingsport this friday night when DB takes on Science Hill. Even if you go to the game, take you a portable radio with headphones. He is excellent.

You could be right, or it could be that since Paul is sales manager, there is more that plays into it than we know about. Also, in many radio stations, the program director is primarily a title that often has little say as to how things operate. Bill could be calling the shots, or it could be a higher-up(manager?) that dictates who will be helping him. We just don't know.

What I do know is that from listening to the broadcast of the Arby's games, I don't get the impression that Bill relishes the input he gets from his color man. At least not in the normal back-and-forth that you get from most play-by-play/color teams.

Bill Meade is over all sports on WJCW. He is a good guy, though I don't always agree with his opinions on his talk show. I don't call in, but if you'll notice, anyone who disagrees with him 'on air' will eventually be dismissed with a "well, whatever", and once they are off-air, Bill will repeat his side of the argument at least 3 times before moving on.

Paul is also a good guy. I think the Arby's is the only place where they call together now. Paul does play-by-play, and does it quite well, I might add, on other games.

By the way, did anybody mention "walkin' around on the rim"?

    • Defending 2A state Champs Westview Lady Chargers are pretty tough. They lost a bunch of production off last year's squad but returned some talent as well. They still McCall Simms, a Tennesseee Lady Vol softball commit as well as solid talent around the diamond. I dont think they are as good as last season but they will definitely be a tough out. Huntingdon Lady Mustangs seem to be pretty stout as well. Don't know much about Riverside other than Westview defeated them earlier in regions. West Tennessee softball is pretty solid all around id say.
    • Eagleville couldn’t catch up to Jones, he did have his location issues but in that game Eagleville popped up everything and the one hit they did have could have been ruled an error. Jeffcoat was a lot sharper in the beginning of the season last year than the end. ER ran out of pitching and still was in striking distance but none the less the better team one. Last seasons tournament was A LOT more balanced and talented. South Pitts starter is a Lefty who was low 80’s but couldn’t maintain his velo throughout the  outing, their #2 was more impressive last year, we knocked him around this year and his mph was down some. Their #3 isn’t bad neither, throws a lot of strikes and sits high 70’s.
    • He actually had a really solid spring.  I could see him getting some backup snaps on offense and be a regular on special teams.  Really athletic kid who can run.
