Coach Jay will do just fine, Pack didn't set the world on fire his first couple of years. When Coach Jay came to CPA we had a large squad, so platooning made sense. Numbers have slowly diminished the last two years and injuries make a bigger impression on a smaller squad, so he's been playing a number of players both ways. Appreciate the concern.

Why have the numbers declined? Is there a problem? Seriously from an outsider CPA appears softer than they used to, in other words not as physical.

No, the numbers at school are the same, CPA and the church haven't expanded facilities for awhile. New schools have been build in and around CPA over the last couple of years, can you say Ensworth. It is difficult in most small schools to maintain a high degree of skill levels all the time, Trousdale being an exception, but I think they would admit that they are down some this year.

The game I attended seem to have many very young players either starting or playing. Not downing them but they had some players at normally very physical positions like LB that just looked very thin and weak. Then I look at a team in their region like Goodpasture and they look so much bigger and physical. They just seem to have gone down in size almost every year since their last state title.

Actually, our 2000 state champ team was much bigger than the last one. 5 kids went D-1. One is now with the Titans. Goodpasture is a bigger than we are, not sure of the numbers. Welcome to 1A and 2A football, it's about the size of the fight in the dog.

Did Coach Pack ever schedule 3 DII teams that are as strong as ECS, Ensworth & Father Ryan? All 3 games within a 5 week period? By the way, what are the combined records of those 3 schools this year? (check it out if you have a minute)

CPA will be fine this year and the battle with Goodpasture will be for the region championship and a #1 seed in the region.

Is CPA as dominant as they were from 99-2002? No. Are they still a great team? Yep.

Remember, Coach Pack also coached before the 1.8 multiplier was in place. If CPA was in 1A this year, they would easily be a top 5 team, if not top 2 or 3. CPA routinely beat Jo Byrns but did lose their one contest with Mt. Pleasant.

The two platoon system is not to blame for the lack of "players at normally very physical positions like LB". You don't get many Alex House type players walk through the doors of your school every year.

Not sure about Alex House but I assume he played on last year's team who lost both time to Goodpasture. I'm not a Goodpasture fan but obviously CPA has to beat them to make it anywhere, usually. Goodpasture has beaten David Lipscomb, Ravenwood and McGavock. The latter is 5A but not a traditional power but 5A nonetheless. I attended the CPA/Goodpasture playoff game last year and CPA did play with heart and had their chance. I think Alcoa is light years ahead in Athletic ability/skill players. I do know Ensworth can and does pay for certain athletes to attend their school, noty sure about Goodpasture and I know CPA doesn't. Maybe it's just the current players and not the coaching but they (CPA) just aren't as tough/physical as they used to appear.

We did lose both our senior linebackers last year to graduation, House being one of them.

GP and CPA cannot offer "aid".

CPA had the athletes in 2004 to challenge for the state championship if they had gotten past Mt. Pleasant. However, DCA was stacked, and deserved the win. If the best athletes played both ways that year, there was a possibility. Last year Goodpasture was stout, but CPA had their chances in the play-off game. No way would CPA have beaten Alcoa. I've noticed several CPA students who played last year are in the stands this year. It's a tough, time-consuming sport that you have to decide is worth the effort if you're not going to get much play time. Not too much "tough" in a population of a little over 300 with half being girls. CPA has the coaching knowledge, though, that gets them easily past most teams in their division and past most play-off opponents.

First off, I am a Goodpasture fan, but I wouldn't get too down on CPA just yet. The losses they do have have come against competition 95% of 2A teams will never see. All three losses to quality DII teams. Ensworth just distroyed McCallie for cryin' out loud. If anyone thinks they are not still one off the top 5 teams in 2A they will have a suprise come playoff time. There strenghth of schedule will payoff in November.
