playoffs

2A will have NO TEAMS with losing records make the playoffs IN ALL LIKELIHOOD this postseason. If there is one then I'd be amazed.

Prepare to be amazed Big Country. There isn't a City of Memphis 2A team with a winning record. Not one out of the five. The best is Booker T. Washington @ 3-5 currently. They have two games left against Carver and and Westwood, so there is no garuntee that they get to 500. Region 9-2A is the worst in the state in any classification and I don't see it getting any better anytime soon. They will send three teams that will all get beat in the first round of the playoffs. For those who are interested ... go here:

and you can see ALL of the region standings for every team and every classification.

That being said ... this playoff system is the best there is in my opinion. Some regions are weak while others are strong. Even with four team per region, some good teams still get left out in the cold. Yes ... there are teams with losing records that get in as well. I'd rather have that then to have some committe somewhere try to determine who gets in and who doesn't because bias ... or the perception of bias will always come into play. This way eliminates that altogether which is great ... no one feels cheated. No system is perfect ... but when you can eliminate bias or it's perception any shape or form ... that's the way to go. The top two teams from each region could work ... but I like four better ... some team may not be in the top two because of early injuries to key players in the beginning of the season or something like that ... but four gives enough teams a shot. Even with the top two teams ... as 9-2A has shown ... teams with losing record can get in. I love taking the top 4 teams.

I don't mind 32 teams going, the ones who aren't good enough won't win so it doesn't really matter.

What I wish they would do for all classifications is put more of a random order in how the playoffs work. The farthest that two teams from the same region can go is the third round, not to mention that when region 1 & 2 (for example) play each other year in and year out in the playoffs it becomes almost a regular season game the coaches in the regions know each other so well. I just wish they would stir it up and have some interesting match-ups, As it stands right now the only chances for teams to play teams that they have rarely if ever played is in the semi's or the burro.

That would be really nice but I can see all kinds of problems with it that it just isn't worth persuing actually. The travel distance is so far and expensive that's why it's set up the way it is now ... the most you spend the night in a hotel type traveling you would need do is two at best during the 5 weekends it takes to establish a state champion. As nice as it sounds ... a region 8 team playing against a region 1 team in the 1st round isn't feasible even though I love the sound of it. Even if you did it like it is done now ... schedule say regions 4 vs 8 and 1 vs 5 every year and make the traveling swap regions each year would only be the way to do it without some type of 'percieved' bias ingrained into the system. Then, you would have the same thing you have now ... except there is more travel expense involved. Any other system wouldn't work because there are going to be a lot of teams who are going to swear up and down that there is an east Tenneesse bias applied to it or there is some middle Tennessee shinanigans going on or there is favoritism towards west Tennessee. There is no way around it. It's best to leave it as it is.
