innocent bystander
Here is what really happened. "Questionable calls mar Bearden loss at Smyrna 17-14" One could tell it was a first class operation. Upon turning off Nissan Drive onto Bulldog Drive, visitors were greeted with light wand-waving attendants who directed them to the next available parking space. The stadium had ample concrete bleachers on the visitor???‚¬?„?s side that rivaled many local schools???‚¬?„? entire complex. The home side was huge. The restrooms were immaculate. The Smyrna Bulldogs are the reigning state 5A champs. The infl uence of Nissan money and that of other fringe businesses that support the huge auto plant just across the street was apparent. Smyrna High School runs a fi rst class football operation. This championship experience became noticeable early in the game as the Bearden Bulldogs exhibited a mild case of the jitters. After the fi rst possession, Bearden punted and the coverage broke down, which allowed the Smyrna speed to set up the fi rst touchdown. Just a little over two minutes into the game, the Bulldogs in purple and yellow drew fi rst blood. Questionable calls mar Bearden loss at Smyrna 17-14 On the ensuing drive, Bearden experienced what was to become a recurring theme for the night ???‚¬??? the hospitable ???‚¬?“home cooking.???‚¬?? After Brandon Pemberton burst through the middle of the Smyrna defense to be dragged down on the Smyrna 26-yard line, Dawson Halliday completed a pass to Madison English to the 17-yard line only to see the ball turned over on a questionable fumble call. The fi rst half ended after a series of Bearden mistakes that could be attributed to the ???‚¬?“championship jitters???‚¬?? with Smyrna on top 17-0. The Bearden ???‚¬?“Wrecking Crew???‚¬?? defense settled down in the second half to contain the vaunted Smyrna offense. The offense seemed to gain its rhythm and the Smyrna cooks in striped shirts opened up the kitchen. First it was a series of unfavorable Bearden spots on short yardage situations and then it became blatantly clear when a Halliday to Darious Dubose pass was caught for a touchdown and was ruled out-of-bounds. But it was a touchdown. Neither team scored in the third quarter. And as time was ticking away late in the fourth with 3:52 remaining, Cory Eichholtz caught a Halliday pass that had been tipped by two Smyrna defenders to tumble into the endzone for Bearden???‚¬?„?s fi rst score. Bearden kickoff specialist, senior Jon-Michael Craze, set the ball for the onside kick. The Bulldogs in white executed it to perfection as Craze???‚¬?„?s kick landed precisely on the 50-yard line and the Bearden assault team demolished the Smyrna receivers while the snatchers covered the ball. Bearden worked the ball to the Smyrna 9-yard line with passes to English and Torey Works. Halliday hit C.J. Gunn over the middle for Bearden???‚¬?„?s second touchdown with 1:17 remaining. Brandon Reagan???‚¬?„?s point after kick was good and the score stood at 17-14. Craze again precisely placed the ball near the 50-yard line. The Smyrna receiver made the mistake of jumping forward to the 49 to catch it, only to be upended by the Bearden assault team. Matt Williamson and Works combined to recover the kick, only to have the chefs in striped shirts rule that the ground caused the fumble. Unless the ground had mysteriously been elevated a foot in the air, this was not the case, as the ball clearly fell out of the purple-clad Bulldog???‚¬?„?s hands on his way to the ground. The Wrecking Crew once again stuffed the Smyrna offense and after some dithering about by the cooks, Smyrna fi nally punted with 13.7 seconds remaining. The piddling around by the offi ciating crew had cost Bearden more than 11 precious seconds. And so the dream ended as English caught a Halliday pass deep in Smyrna territory and was shoved out of bounds as time expired. If you???‚¬?„?re ever in Smyrna, stay away from the Zebra Caf???© located at 100 Bulldog Drive. The food is really lousy there. All Bearden fans, parents, players, students etc... Don't worry, TSSAA is aware of this game and it is being investigated. Although we all know that it changes nothing, at the very least those officials have worked their last game. Also, if you haven't allready done so, go to the TSSAA website and click on feedback and say your peace. SMYRNA FANS: realize that no one is blaming you all for anything. You were also robbed of a clean win with no controversy. HE WAS OUT OF BOUNDS!!!! Quit bringing this up. It is not even debateable! You sound like a bunch of whiny 2 year olds that lost their toy truck.

The piddling around by the offi ciating crew had cost Bearden more than 11 precious seconds. Now, I know that this is a comedic post. If you are griping about this you really are crazy. Bearden jumps offsides with 24 seconds left, and is rewarded by getting the clock stopped. They put those "11 precious seconds" back on the clock, when all Smyrna should have had to do was let the clock run out due to Bearden's mistake. Since you guys like posting fiction as fact, I guess this shouldn't surprise me
tpoole12
Just a note.. I don't have a "dog" in this but.... Congratulations to Smyrna. My condolences to Beardon. First to Smyrna. Alot of your fans appear to be a little cocky in my opinion. You were in fact lucky to win this game. Beardon owned all the stats but the one that counts. Your offense was held in check by a very good Beardon defense. The breaks went your way and you didn't give up any easy points. I know its a win but don't waste it by letting the next one get away. To Beardon. I know it hurts to lose. Especially when you feel like you were "cheated". The truth is that you didn't lose the game in the fourth quarter. The game was lost in the first three. In games such as this one the players go away feeling as though they didn't leave it all on the field. There is so much room for what if or had this happened or if that hadn't happened. The bottom line is the game is over. They are not going to put any more time on the clock or call the teams back to play more. Its over..... Every team has games that they win when they were out performed by the other. At the same time you will lose when you know that you were the better team. Smyrna you were lucky....Beardon you had a bad night.... If these same teams played tomorrow the out come might be different but we will never know. It wasn't in the cards for Beardon to win this one. I'm sure both players and fans from both teams can look back at the past year and see that sometimes you were lucky or caught another team on a bad night. The night we played Beardon was one of those that nothing went our way. Had a corner not fell down or bit on a run.... Take away two long td's, QB has a bad night... See what I mean....... Its a game that is only played once.. No do overs.... Both teams should be proud that they were in this game. Don't cheapen the efforts of the young men who played the game by beating a dead horse. Smyrna you need to focus on the next game.. Beardon fans and players, hold your heads up and be proud of your accomplishments.. tpoole12

You were also robbed of a clean win with no controversy. Just an FYI ... you are giving Nissan WAY too much credit. The school recieved a check from them last year in the amount of $200.00 (maybe less)!! Congratulations to the Bearden seniors ... you had a great year and best of luck to you all! 82cat
OK - EVERY WORD OF THIS IS TO BEDARDEN FANS NOT PLAYERS BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GAME apparently the mods are going to let this one go on forever since it is Smyrna being hatcheted if it was anybody else it would be closed by now. so if they are lets go!!! I have set back and watched this thread go on now for 3 days and have seen Smyrna ran throught the mud well as most know on here if you come after Smyrna well you better expect it back!!! bearden - you play like a 3rd place region team for 4 qts and then cry like a baby when for 3 minutes every single thing doesn't go your way. the way you played for 3 qtrs YOU DESERVED TO LOSE but as jack nicholson said YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!! Bearden you fans are the sorriest cry baby losers in the history of coach t. I am sorry that the chamionship you thought you were so entiltled to never happened. You have to win a chamionship by playing well for 4 qtrs and over coming obsatcles -- YOU DID NEITHER IN THIS GAME you keep talking about look at the film bla blah blah well I did and there is clear evidence of a team that stunk the place up for 3 solid qtrs. 1st half 3 turnovers one returned for a td - Smyrna did not have a single turnover thats what chamions do! you punted the ball directly to the best punt returner in the state - speaking of film maybe you want to watch some every now and then of your opponent and then you will know --- DO NOT KICK IT TO WILKS only twice did you cross mid field with that powerful running game that we heard so much about you kept the ball for most of the 3rd qtr and scored------------------ zero you did a better job running out the clock than we did. I WOULD SAY THERE IS CLEAR EVIDENCE ON FILM WHY BEARDEN LOST. by the way here are some more excuse you may want to try it was to cold it was to damp we were tired the sun was in our eyes the people cheered and scared us it was to windy the switch to central time zone threw us off bus lag lost our homework altitude difference from knoxville By the way if you check all the scoreboards in the state they still show Smyrna 17 Bearden
