6) Hampton

6) Johnson County

The Lady Highlanders continued their recent trend of beating bigger, and

supposedly better teams. This week, Unicoi County is the victim. 46-41

in double-overtime.

During the recent era, the Lady Cyclones have been an example of consistency, and

obviously, we'd Love to see them play Cloudland. Meanwhile, we have only the loss,

by Cloudland, to Morristown West, the same Morristown West that Elizabethton came

back to defeat at Happy Valley, to compare. So why is Cloudland this week's number

one? Because the Lady Highlanders beat the previous number one, Unicoi County, in

Erwin. Elizabethton might do the same thing, especially if the Lady Blue Devils don't

find a way to finish games.

Much is being made of Unicoi County's guard play; the biggest concern being the inability

to handle pressure defenses. Unaka provided plenty of pressure, but ultimately the

Lady Blue Devils were able to get the ball to their trio of post players. And Payge Barnett

is the area's premier, senior shooting guard. Size and athletically, Unicoi County is is still

the team to beat in-conference. But consistency, is becoming a big concern.

Happy Valley moves to number four solely on their courageous performance at Unicoi County.

And what about the freshman, Cara Bowling? Eighteen points against the Lady Blue Devils is

very impressive.

Unaka couldn't buy a basket at home against Unicoi County, and lost by sixteen - 47-31. It

isn't just the loss that drops the Lady Rangers to fifth, as much as it is the concern for their

outside game. In our league, you have to be able to throw it in from the perimeter, and until

last Thursday, the Lady Rangers had been woeful in shooting the ball.

Freshman guard, Taylor Byars, went off for fifteen points in Mountain City, and Brittany Scott,

who played less than a full half of basketball due to illness, continues to display multiple ways to

score the ball, with eighteen. Kayla Winters is regaining her game; Kaleigh Elsea threw in a couple

long-range baskets and had a great defensive game. Chelsea Anderson is being moved around

to find ways to utilize her shooting skills, defense, and ball handling. Chesnie Cox shows promise

at one or two, and with her defensive quickness.

Johnson County is rapidly improving with five seniors. Angie Church - 12 points - and April Wilson

(10) led the Lady Longhorns offense. Amber Billings played very well defensively, Kechia Eller

scored six, but missed time with foul trouble.

The Lady Bulldogs played about as bad in the second half, as they did good in the first against

Elizabethton. A team that shoots well from outside, Hampton was under-sized against Elizabethton's

post game. Mariah Pietrowski continues to impress; Jasmine Jefferson was all-around good; and

the Elizabethton guards - Jasmine Treadway, Kelli Culler, Kyla Jones, and freshman Kristen Powell,

made life miserable for the Hampton guards. Hannah Fritz is the feel-good story of early season.

She's making plays offensively and defensively.

Outstanding players: The defensive play of the Elizabethton guards; Hampton - Ingram, Sarah

Calhoun; Happy Valley - Cara Bowling; Johnson County - Angie Church, April Wilson; Cloudland -

Jordan Miller, Brooke Johnson; Unaka - Taylor Byars, Brittany Scott; Uncoi County - Alisha Mainer

Payge Barnette.

KRich,

Is your ratings system askew? From previous experience with your poll and your own personal polling trends, have you not missed the mark? Elizabethton has earned the #1 position until proven otherwise on the strength of the Mo West win along with the others........... In my 'from a distance view' that nails the top position at this time. When they havn't earned it, I'll call it so. Take care of The King, someone has to.

GO CYLCONES!

Picks for the week:

1. Elizabethton - based on their win over Morristown West and Hampton

2. Cloudland - based on their loss by Morristown West and win over Unicoi County

3. Unicoi County - based on their win over Happy Valley and their loss to Cloudland

4. Happy Valley - based on their loss by Unicoi County

5. Hampton - based on their loss by Elizabethton and pure speculation

6. Unaka - based on their win over Johnson County and some more speculation

7. Johnson County - based on their loss by Unaka and well that's about it

Elizabethton seems to have a slight edge over the Lady Highlanders. After watching the Unicoi and Happy Valley game I'm not that impressed with the win by the Highlanders over the Devils. First thought that was kind of an upset but not now. Cloudland has a better over all team. Happy Valley a sometimes good team should handle Hampton and Unaka both. Hampton's pressure will give other teams trouble if they don't come to play. Could see the Dogs beating the Devils in one of their matchups. Unaka is still a big question mark. Not sure they are as strong over all as they have been the last couple of years. Johnson County seems improved but still not enough to compete for positions in the rankings.

It may effect their ranking in the Tri-County Seven poll, but Greene County isn't in it. Since you asked:

1.Elizabethton

2.South Greene

3.Unicoi Co.

4.Happy Valley

5.West Greene

6.Chuckey-Doak

7.Johnson Co.

8.Sullivan North

Elizabethton has been a model of consistency for the past four seasons-plus, beating almost every team they should beat, and your point about Morristown West is valid. But for my part, the Lady Blue Devils were number one last week. The Lady Highlanders went to Erwin, and beat them.

Unicoi County, gets dropped two positions for failing to close the deal after leading Cloudland by double digits.

*I initiate this poll to open debate, and I'm certainly Not the ultimate authority. Nor do I want to be. Ideally, we would meet at El Toritos every Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon, have a burrito, a discussion, and vote. And YES, you can buy.

And not to worry, the Lady Cyclones play at Unicoi County a week from Tuesday. Meanwhile, the thing to watch this week is how Mariah's knee reacts to three games in four nights. She's looked great so far, but that's a lot to ask. I'm sure Coach Dugger will monitor that closely.

I have to believe that the guard 'tandem' at Betsy is quick and solid based on the last couple of seasons performances. How is thier outside shooting going and is there a 'new guard' on the team that wasn't in the picture last season?

Elizabethton's guard play has been good; better defensively, than offensively. All four of them -

Culler, Jones, Treadway, and Powell - are quick. They can shoot. They run the court well. Last

season they were all prone to turning the ball over, but to date, that hasn't been a big issue.

The new guard is Kristen Powell, a freshman. She is a little, little, but can outrun the latest gossip.

That fact that I have Cloudland on top is significanct only because a school of barely 200 students

takes a team on the road and wins in Erwin. That's impressive.

To catch you up, Elizabethton and Unaka have the best upside of all the Seven. In late-summer,

the Lady Cyclones had no head coach, and Mariah could barely walk. Unaka beat them by twenty-

plus, and quite honestly, it could've been worse. So, things look very promising for Elizabethton.

Meanwhile, Unaka has a tremendous group of freshmen, but as you very well know, freshmen are,

well, Freshmen. With Kayla Winters continuing to catch up, and with the progressive youth movement,

things look very good on the Creek for tournament time, possibly much sooner.
