Tops In Class A

1. Jackson County (8-0) ??“ The Lady Blue Devils continued to dominate the Upper Cumberland this past week as they defeated AAA Cookeville by eleven points before giving a good Pickett County squad a beating by thirty-eight points. Jackson County has been very impressive in attaining their first eight wins this season as they have an average margin of victory of 21.9 points per game while playing one of the toughest schedules in Class A. The Lady Blue Devils have two District 7A games on the road this week as they head to Red Boiling Springs on Tuesday in what should be an emotion filled game before traveling to Monterey on Friday to take on Molly Heady and the Lady Wildcats.

2. Clarkrange (8-1) ??“ The Lady Buffaloes had little problems in earning two more key District 7A wins this past week as they took down Clay County by thirty and Monterey by fourteen. This week will be a busy one for Clarkrange as they start the week at home with games against District 7A foe Pickett County on Tuesday and Wartburg on Friday. Then on Saturday, the Lady Buffaloes hit the road to take on the undefeated Lady Panthers of AA Stone Memorial in what should be a feature match-up between some of the best guards in the Upper Cumberland area.

3. Richland (7-0) ??“ The Lady Raiders kicked off District 11A play in a big way this past week as they dominated a young Moore County squad in Lynchburg by twenty-eight before completely dismantling Huntland by forty-four. For their third time in the early part of this young season, Richland will play only one game all week as they head on the road for another district game as they travel to Columbia Academy on Friday in what should be another blow-out victory for the Lady Raiders.

4. Collinwood (6-1) ??“ The Trojanettes took early control of District 12A last week as they took down county rival Wayne County by twelve points in a low scoring affair before netting seventy-four points against an apparently very bad defensive team in Perry County in rout to a twenty point victory. Collinwood continues to ride the very broad shoulders of star guards Abby Andrews and Lesley Daniel, but are starting to get more production from fellow starters Trista Rich and Allie Ward, which only spells trouble for their future opponents. Two of those unlucky opponents will host the Trojanettes this week as Collinwood heads to Hampshire on Tuesday for an easy game before making the trip to Summertown on Friday, where it is always hard to come away with a win.

5. Westmoreland (6-0) ??“ The Lady Eagles wrapped up their six-game home stint to open the season with two more wins last week as they took down District 8A opponent Mt. Juliet Christian by twenty-four before getting a scare from Region 4A rival Red Boiling Springs in a close four point victory. Westmoreland will have to do better then they did in their four point victory over RBS if they ever expect to take down two juggernauts of District 7A in Jackson County and Clarkrange come Regional Tournament time. Westmoreland needs to be more aggressive on both ends of the floor and can start do so this week as they hit the road on Tuesday to take on AA Macon County before traveling to Friendship Christian for another District 8A game.

6. Forrest (7-2) ??“ The Lady Rockets kept themselves perfect in District 9A with a victory on the road against Eagleville by forty-three points in their only game of the week. Things could get just a little tougher this week as they host a pair of district games starting on Tuesday with Cascade, an up-and-coming team primed for an upset, and culminating on Friday with Community, a team coming off an upset of Van Buren County.

7. Cloudland (6-1) ??“ The Lady Highlanders took control of both of their games early this week as they took down AA Johnson County by thirteen and thumped Cosby by thirty. Cloudland will have a really easy time this week as they have only one game on Tuesday on the road against Providence High School across state lines in North Carolina.

8. Madison Academic Magnet (7-2) ??“ The Lady Mustangs avenged one of their two early season losses when they jumped on AA University School of Jackson early in the second half and ended up winning by ten. Their other win this week came at the expense of Clarksburg as Coach Peterson??™s girls came away with a fourteen point victory. Junior guard Morgan Faulkner has been superb early on and has received help inside by a vastly improved Kiara Hunt. Expect those two to have a huge night in their only game this week as they hit the road on Thursday to take on the winless Halls Lady Tigers.

9. Wayne County (6-2) ??“ The Lady Cats opened up District 12A play with a loss to the district front-runner, and biggest rival, Collinwood by 12. Waynesboro then responded by beating the pulp out of another district team, Zion Christian Academy, as they won big by forty-four. Wayne County will grab two more wins this week as they have two games against district bottom-feeders beginning with winless Mt. Pleasant at home on Tuesday and finishing at Hampshire on Friday.

10. Middleton (8-0) ??“ The Lady Tigers enter the top ten after winning their first eight games of the year, including three last week in victories over AA Bolivar Central (by 2), Adamsville (by 7), and Walnut, Mississippi (by 51). The Lady Tigers, who return three starters from last season, have relied heavily on two of those, Valnessa Miller and Jasmine Perry, for the bulk of their offense. They??™ll definitely need their offense this week as Middleton has three games starting at home with the always tough AA McNairy Central on Tuesday. Then, these District 16A girls will take on a pair of fellow Region 8A teams as they head to Jackson Christian on Friday before hosting Trinity Christian Academy on Saturday.

Best of the Rest: Manassas (11), West Carroll (12), Decatur County Riverside (13) Bradford (T14), Trenton Peabody (T14)

Class A Games of the Week

---Jackson County at Red Boiling Springs (Tuesday) ??“ While this may not be as close as it has been in the past score-wise, there is no denying how much emotion will be put into this ball game by both sides. The transfer of Laken Leonard from Red Boiling Springs to Jackson County during the summer not only caused a stir of controversy but fueled the fire that could become a full blown rivalry between not only these two teams, but these two coaches. There is little love loss here and the Lady Bulldogs will be out to prove that there is life after the departure of Leonard. Still, Jackson County is very heavily favored in this first of two regular season District 7A meetings between these two teams.

---Bradford at Trenton Peabody (Tuesday) ??“ Trenton Peabody has stormed out of the early season gates behind the dominating play of Rakeshia Perry in the post and, mainly because of her, currently sits atop District 14A after defeating Gleason in a tough seven point battle. Sitting directly behind them in that second spot is Bradford, whose only district loss came at the hands of the ever present and dangerous Gleason. Bradford comes into this game having a huge advantage at the guard spots with Danielle Proudfit leading the way, but they are very streaky and if they are not on early, it could be a long night for the Lady Red Devils. They also have very capable post players, all of whom do have some size and could present a problem for Perry if Bradford throws body after body at her. However, Perry has yet to be deterred from getting all that she wants in the paint and one can only think that she will dominate this aspect of the game yet again. However, in order for the Lady Golden Tide to be successful, the guards will have to step up and contribute on the offensive end and be able to weather Bradford??™s full court defensive pressure. A win by Peabody would put them firmly in the driver??™s seat in District 14A, while a win from Bradford would force a three-way tie at the top. Who??™s the favorite in this match-up is anyone??™s guess, but as is the case this year in District 14A, you should always expect the unexpected.

---McEwen at White House-Heritage (Friday) ??“ The battle for second place in District 10A is up for grabs as both McEwen and White House-Heritage enter this game at 2-1 in district play. The Warriorettes of McEwen have relied heavily on the play of Junior post player Andrea Hobson who is averaging around twenty-five points per game to go with her double-digit average in rebounds. On the other side of the ball is another Junior in Chelsea Hannah of the Lady Patriots who is averaging just above sixteen points per game and possesses a nice ability to not only knock down the outside shot but get to the hole as well. Hannah is surrounded by some other capable players who have helped the Lady Patriots present a balanced scoring attack in all of their games. McEwen, on the other hand, will need their guards, Allison Hobson and Taylor Long, to step up and help Hobson if they expect to come away as the victors.

Looks like a quality top ten as usual pt12. The game between JC and RBS will certainly be an emotional one! The Lady Rockets continue to take care of business and play to improve every game. We certainly have a tough couple of games coming up at Waynesboro on the 20th and 21st when we take on Collinwood and Wayne Coiunty....however Cascade and Community will be no picnic either! Every game is bringing you closer to your goals...keep working hard....GO LADY ROCKETS!!!!!!!!

14A is wide open just like 13AA....I don't believe the A state champ will come from the West this year...Not a strong year for single A ball out here....TCA IMO was the best Single A team out West until Crickett Glenn and the others quit...Then I went to Bradford thinking they'd be the best...just a down year for Single A ball out West

I agree that it is a little down especially up in that area. Teams like West Carroll, Madison Academic, Middleton, Manassas, and Decatur County Riverside from other West Tennessee districts are all showing signs of improvement from last season. The majority of those teams return the bulk of their lineup from a year ago. Peabody may have something, but they will only go as far as Perry can carry them. Odds are good that the State Champion will be from Middle Tennessee, barring some miracle run by a team from the East or West.

Peabody is decent but not near the caliber of last years Gleason team or the Peabody teams that won back to back state championships just a few years ago...Trenton has Perry but no more "clutch" players...not so sure about the coaching either...In the Trenton/GC game, which turned out to be a 6 point win for GC, GC was leading all night by anywhere from 12-20 points...the only reason we were up that much is because they had no answer except for Perry against the full court pressure...if Trenton get's a decent press thrown at them their in for a long night...

In a year or two I expect Gleason to be back to queen of 14A...With players like Jenna Frazier and the other Sophomore (forgot the name, Stout maybe???) I see Gleason making a possible trip back to the 'boro in about another year or two but not this year...

P.S. Heather Butler is looking AWESOME!!!!!! To be only a Sophomore and leading Gibson Co. like she is is very impressive! If you get a chance this year you need to try and watch her! Much more improved than last year IMO...
