Referee abuses power

This is my 2 cents on the matter...

When I got thrown out of a baseball game for asking an umpire where the guy tagged me, ( I was stealing 2nd) I got my butt chewed up, spit out, and thrown away when I got home.

You want an example of how sports give adolescents training for the real world? 1012biggestfan, I don't think your son deserved either one of those t-ups. But, Refs. are PEOPLE, and guess who your son, when he gets done with school, will work with and deal with...PEOPLE. They're all different and all have different opinions and views. Just as shown on this website every minute. The refs. that night were short-tempered, so adjust to their style, just like we all do everyday.

That ref. probably has no clue who your son is, and if he does, he couldn't care less. Think about it, you're a dad, are you gonna pick on some little high school boy at a basketball game?

I don't agree with a parent getting on here and trying to protect their children after a basketball game. You wanted them to learn about life through sports, and they're learning, and sometimes it's not easy.

May be that's just the way I was brought up, and I understand it's not my son, so if you're going to protect him, that's your choice.

If I was a ref....I would tech fans like me that yell at the refs for everything they do....right or wrong. That would clean up the game alot. Most of the time they just stand there and look at you during timeouts and such while we're telling them how stupid and blind they are.

No....if they were guilty of abusing power....and while I'm at it....there are some that are, they would tech up anybody that looked at them straight.....and in my opinion would be justified in their actions. Take care of the little things and the rest will be alright.

Here is the thing. Referees and Umpires in all sports are the most protected group in athletics from rec league up to professionals. They don't have to explain themselves or answer questions about their calls. That isn't what happens in the real world, when you make a decision, you will be asked why you made that decision and if it was the wrong one you would be reprimanded. I think officials in all levels should have to answer to the public and those they work for on why they make certain calls. Why should they get protection? Even when refs screw up majorly, the only thing that happens is that the conference or league sends out statement saying they made a error in judgement in the game. Big whoop, if you want games to be called more accuratley and keep refs accountable, have them available to the media.

you couldnt be more wrong.

just because something isnt reported thru the media doesnt mean it doesnt happen.

public reporting of when officials are being scrutinized, questioned, reprimanded,

or even reassigned would serve no one's best interests.

look how people treat them now.

HERES AN UNBIASED OPINION. tHE KID GOT THE FIRST FOR HIS HAND GESTURE AND HE GOT THE SECOND FOR HIS HAND GESTURE. yES THE SECOND ONE WAS QUICK BUT HE SHOULD HAVE LEARNED FROM THE FIRST ONE. i TOO AS A FATHER WOULD NOT PUT UP WITH MY CHILDREN ACTING LIKE THAT DURING A GAME. WHEN THEY CAME HOME THEY GOT A BUTT CHEWING FROM ME FOR ACTING THAT WAY. BUT IN TODAYS WORLD EVERYONES KIDS NEVER DO NOTHING WRONG IT IS ALWAYS SOMEELSES FAULT THAT IT HAPPENED. BE A MAN A STAND UP AND SAY MY CHILD WAS WRONG AND SHOULD NOT ACT THAT WAY. IT,LL NEVER HAPPEN.

MY UNBIASED OPPINION ON THE FILM AND SUBJECT.

Thankyou everyone for your opinions. Some of you have made a lot of sense and even helped me look at things differently. You are absoutely right about parents not disciplining their kids and leaving it up to the schools and then getting upset with the school for doing the parents job. That is how we lost our coach of 8 years at my sons school. Of course I do know my sons better than most dads know their kids and I know everyone believes that and that it is a subjective opinion. My kids know better than to talk back to the refs and that is why they didnt. My son got his head ripped off when he got home because I was recording the game and did not see it clearly until I got home and saw it and then apoligized to my son for judging him the way I did. He now knows to be passionate but to be smart about it. I could never be a ref. I am not thick skinned enough. I let things get to me easily and that is not a good trait for a ref. However if i was a ref I would tell the players pregame how the game would be called and allow the players to adjust to all of a sudden calling the game tight. I would be consistent which seems to be everyones complaint about refs. Anyway thank god for the refs that take their jobs seriously and make basketball a great game. My son missed his brothers final game, and is suspended for two games so I think he learned his lesson. He is our top shooter and leading scorer and he knows his actions cost them the season whether justified or not. And who says sports does not prepare you for life. Oh yeah something I have not mentioned before, that ref that gave the unwarned 2nd tech has had a history with that schools bball program for the last 6 years. Not only that the school has been in the news a lot and has formed some bad opinions of the school. Whattever happened it seemed like the twilight zone . One minute were playing great bball and the next my sons on the bench and the season is over, pretty crazy night. Anyway good luck to all you parents its not easy is it.

poor thing. can you give us an update on his emotional status? mean old referee wouldn't let him act like a spoiled sport. shame on the ref.

Your hillarious. Thanks for asking. He is doing a lot better than I am. He is looking forward to next year and will probably never look at another ref as long as he lives. We are going to work on his display of passion for the game of bball so this never happens again, Take care and god bless

Wrestling referees are evaluated with a point system and rewarded for excellent refereemansip and also held accountable for laziness and unproffesionalism. I wonder if they could apply that to other sports. How long have you been a ref

So what would the forum be for this Q&A? Who would ask the questions - coaches, fans, referee partners, inquisitive 9 year olds? Would this take place after each call or during time outs or after the game? Instead of a letter should they replay the game from the point the error in judgement was made, declare a forfeit, make the official repay those in attendance plus expenses. I think you have a great idea. I'm just wondering how you propose to enact the program.

Turn off the caps.

Space out your posts.

This was one hard to read thread...

The kids probably deserved what they got. There's always more to the story. It's tournament time, and you're not going to get the same officiating that you're used to during the regular season.

Argue all you wish, but what can change at this point? nothing.

You got me there. I really have not put enough thought into it. Excellent point though . Right now I am just trying to get my son looked at by some colleges. except when I get on here and vent. Take care

    • And that needs to go, Charter ,private ,magnet, city and any school that operates differently than pure public schools should be separated. What really needs to be done is address urban and rural. About all the usual powers have access to several kids from other schools period.
    • Sad deal. Hate it. So the coach that kicked her off is now fired??
    • Slightly off topic from a gender standpoint but just observed several boys volleyball games in the Knoxville area for a short spring season. The guys seemed to have a great time. There were several club players on each team but several football, basketball and tennis players involved. Knoxville Catholic, Maryville, Heritage, Knoxville West maybe William Blount had teams. Thanks to Coach Brent Carter from Knoxville Catholic/K2 for getting it together. I’m sure the coaches involved got several laughs trying to coach guys that really had no idea what they were talking about but pretty athletic and competitive. Catholic’s best basketball player told the coach he had played a lot of 2:3 and 1:3:1 but never a 3:3 LOL Maybe it will catch on with some more schools next year.
