illegal pitch

There have been several discussions on this board about illegal pitches

not being called in high school ball.

Various reason included re-plant or crow hopping, leaping, or back foot not dragging.

Swingaway posted a some great pictures and a video as examples.

Mytwocents posted the NFHS video on this subject.

I watched HS District games last week, and observed another example:

When pitcher would start windup and rock or step back, the heel of her push-off

foot would come off the rubber, with her toe maintaining contact with the rubber.

(or sometimes the ground)

Pitcher would scoot or slide her push-off foot several inches in front of the rubber,

and then finish delivery. Was not called once.

Saw this same delivery in the VA Tech vs NC State in ACC Championship game on

Sunday. Tincher of VA Tech was called for illegal pitch 5 times.

Has anyone seen this called in HS?

I have seen it called several times in both HS and travel ball, usually early in the season though. Jenny Finch was called for it a couple times in the USA/Va Tech game.

They dont call squat in high school! I really think the umpires are scared to death to call anything that is controversial. I am all for just doing away with the rules on pitching if they are not going to enforce them. Heck, why dont we just let the pitchers get a running start from second!

swingaway is right, for the pitchers that try their hardest to be within the guidelines, it is hard to watch an opposing pitcher crowhop, replant, or anything else. The only time I saw the umps get agressive with this was couple years ago in state. all of the sudden everything was illegal. How ever slappers could still run half way to the pitcher before they hit.

True summeball exposure tournys the umpires are on it pretty tight.

That's funny /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

As I have said before, enforce the rules....or just take them out of the book.

I agree, we played a non-district game this year in which every pitch the girl threw was illegal. We went to the umpire between innings asking him to make her maintain contact with the rubber during the pitch and he just simply said no and walked away.
