Promises to be a great tournament!

I know the Wave travels well to other areas of the state...hopefully that support will be reciprocated.

This event can be a big step in progressing youth wrestling in West Tennessee, which would ultimately be beneficial in strengthening the entire state.

Will be there!

SAC has apparently done a good job marketing this tournament. Wrestlers from Edwardsville, IL., Jackson, MO., Blue Birds, AR., Zumwalt St. Charles, MO., have all committed.

SAC has indeed done a great job getting some out of state groups to come on down for this tournament. We travel to them all the time so they were more than happy to return the favor when they heard we were putting on a tournament.

Now if only we could get some of the other teams from around our own state to plan on coming down!

Actually there are several clubs in the state who have contacted me... This is guaranteed be a well run tournament with excellent competition. For you college football fans, the U of M Tigers will be playing host to the UCF Golden Knights. And if the NBA is more your style, you can catch the Memphis Grizzlies take on the Utah Jazz... Don't miss the opportunities.

What happened at this tournament? It is my understanding from some of our West Tennessee wrestling fans that everything was running very late. Did you really have kids making weight @ 10:00am and not wrestling until 4:00pm?

When you have that many kids in one tournament, you are going to expect some back ups. There was constant action, and no dead mats. So to me, the tournament staff did an excellent job keeping things running.

Weight ins for Schoolboys and Cadets was from 10 to 11, so if they weighed in at 10, that's because they got in line early.

As with all tournaments, there is that chance for delays... There were over three-hundred wrestlers registered for the tournament. That number accounts for twenty different clubs from five different states being represented. With a number of scratches and missed weights, rebracketing did add to the delay. In the end, 280 wrestlers stepped on to the mat. This was the largest youth wrestling tournament ever held in Memphis.

However, I am choosing not to dwell on the negatives associated with a youth wrestling tournament running a little long on a wrestling board. Rather, I would like to commend those young men who distinguished themselves amongst their competitors. Outstanding wrestler awards were presented to the following wrestlers; Jack Shirley (Wave Club Wrestling) Bantam Division, Layne Hatcher (Mighty Bluebirds Wrestling Club) Intermediate Division, Shaun Beeman (Zumwalt Wrestling) Novice Division, Nick Gray (Wave Club Wrestling) Schoolboy Division, and Brandon Hataway (Wave Club Wrestling) Cadet Division.

These accolades were bestowed upon these wrestlers at the input of various coaches. However, this should not take away from any of the other wrestlers who competed Saturday. There was great competition from all over. We are already working on ways to eliminate the delays we experienced this year and looking forward to seeing the level of competition and number of wrestlers increase next year.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and making this event possible and remember that you are now part of wrestling history in Memphis, even though you had to wait.

Excellent choices on the OW'ers. These boys, along with quite a few others where amazing to watch. Even though the tournament was a little longer than expected, I can say how impressed I was with the talent that was in one gym. Hopefully some of the middle of the state can come down and try it out next year.
