The Sequatchie Valley

I saw them play twice in Chattanooga last year. They, both coach and players, were not on the same page it seemed. The game I saw at Silverdale ended up in a brawl. There was no structure as I saw it nor any discipline. Now that could very well change. I have heard Phillips is a good coach and I know he had a terrific coach who was at the school in a non coaching capacity last year. Maybe he learned some things that will help him in the future. Still it is hard to get respect if you haven't already earned it. Young coach who must listen and learn from better coaches.

South Pitt hasn't had a coach that has even tried to bring any discipline or structure to that program in a long long time if not ever. He has graduated and filtered out a lot of the attitudes and 'me' players down there. Those boys down there have never had anyone that cared about the game to try and discipline them so they were rebellious, they are gone now, that's why i said you will see a different pirate team. Phillips is entering his third season at SP and i think it could be one of the best of his career. I wish him and all the boys down in the south part of the county the very best of luck.

And a sweep by the tigers

No offense to Heath, but are you nuts? i don't see how you can lose as many minutes as you did and get a new coach with no in game experience (not taking a shot at Coach Thacker, but in game experience is a very important thing, ask any coach) and expect to go into their new gym (as their first home game as i understand it) and against a good coach and great athletes and sweep? You are outside your mind, be realistic here. I understand you should have the confidence to win and that's why they play the game, but on paper do you honestly believe this?

what's up alum? hope all is well and hope the new job is going well... i will have to disagree with you though i see the marion/SP games as a split

why is this coach at sp any better than anybody else? how many district and region championships does he have? state appearences? none i think. puts him on par with everybody else in the valley doesn't it? i would say everyone will be competive with sp this year as they always have been. this better be they year i hear.

I gotta agree...they lost their starting five and a coach that had been coaching a few years and replaced that with 5 new starters and a coach who has no experience other than junior pro...again im like you not taking a shot just being realistic....and all ive heard is the kids have to buy in to the system or have to get on board with the program....people are talking like jason smith or david phillips took over...a first year coach probably doesnt have much of a "system" or a "program" yet...takes time to develop

all that being said i could see marion and south pitt splitting and sequatchie and marion splitting....not a ton of difference between the three...the top end of the valley looks pretty good...the bottom looks really weak just my opinion though.....that and a few million can get you 30 mins on tv with obama

How many district and region championships does Coach Smith have? How many state appearances? none i think, but i promise no one on here would argue that he is just a par coach, same goes with Coach Phillips. If you compare Phillips to the coaches they have had there in the past, he is looking like a Roy Williams before he won the national championship. (i'm not comparing Phillips to Coach Williams so please don't take that out of context)

Basketball is about being disciplines as a team, working together and listening to your coach even when you don't agree. Without that you have a team that is out of control and will fall apart when rattled. You can be their coach but not their best friend.....but those things go with any sport. Reply not directed to any particular team.

Hey Pickandpoop. nice name btw, but i agree that Coach Phillips will do good things in SP.

As far as that Teddy Guyear and Kevin Butner thing..... I think thats the only thing that can stop Butner, Fouls.

And Teddy is too smart and takes care of the ball, plus he uses his body great in order to draw fouls. Thats just not a good match up due to that reason. And I am not trying to say that Butner doesn't play smart, cause he does but he plays soooooo aggressive. Now if they were playing pick up ball I'd love to see them go at each other.

More like pickandflip hahaha, silk u know what i mean. Like he runs off screens to.....come on

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
