On a similar note, congratulations to Smyrna for winning Region 5 and good luck against Brentwood Thursday night. I know you can win and we hope you get to represent District 9AAA at State!

Independence High ended a long reign by Brentwood atop the Region 6-AAA volleyball world with a straight-game win over the Bruins in the finals Tuesday at Antioch High.

???It??™s been a four-year journey, and it??™s great to finally get there,??™??™ said Eagles coach Stephanie Bauer, who has guided the Eagles for those four years. ???It??™s a great tribute to our seven seniors who have worked so hard to achieve this.??™??™

One of those seniors, Sam Serley, was named tournament MVP after the Eagles captured an impressive straight-game 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 victory over the defending state champs in just 57 minutes.

???Sam does so many things for us, she??™s a good setter, blocker, an all-around player,??™??™ Bauer said. ???I??™m very happy for her.??™??™

Tuesday??™s contest was totally different from last week??™s District 11-AAA finals match when host Independence barely scraped out a five-game victory. The last game had five total match points by both teams. On Tuesday, after Brentwood took an 8-7 lead in the first game, but the Bruins never again led in the match.

???For some reason, we didn??™t play with any zip, with any energy,??™??™ said coach Barbara Campbell, whose team is 39-19. ???We talked about avenging that loss in the district, but we didn??™t walk the walk.

???As disappointing as that was, at least we still have a chance to get to state, if we can win our sectional match,??™??™ Campbell added.

Chelsea Goodson, Caroline Carlton and Tess Perilli all made all-tournament for Independence, while Angelle Hayes and Natalie Brown were all-tourney for BHS.

Both teams advance to Thursday??™s sectionals.

If both teams win sectionals, it wouldn??™t be beyond the scope to see the two teams playing in the AAA finals in next week??™s state tournament at Murfreesboro.

Brentwood beat host Antioch, and Independence stopped Glencliff, both in three straight games, in the semifinals.
