Tullahoma Girls Basketball 2008-09

there are only two mysteries about tullahoma girls basketball:

1) why the parents expect different results

2) why any coach would take that job

girls basketball in tennessee is played at a higher level than any other secondary school sport in the state,

and playing at the highest level requires dedication. the tullahoma girls basketball culture is utterly anti-dedication.

the tullahoma culture is one where i have heard parents say for literally decades; "we dont want *our* girls to be good at one thing, we want *our* girls to be good at lots of things."

well, it doesnt work that way. just because they have more affluent parents (on the whole) than the other schools, their girls are not inherently superior to the girls from less affluent schools. if they want to have success in girls basketball, they will have to match the effort of their opponents, and this is something the tullahoma people are unwilling to do.

sure, they probably have success at other sports; because the competition is not nearly as strong.

the lessons of sports are the lessons of life, and this lesson is: a half vast effort yields a half vast result.

i cant say whether this is bad or good. the pros and cons of high school athletes dedicating themselves to a sport is another debate altogether, but it is foolish to expect different results than your preparation would indicate. unless the tullahoma people decide to put in more of an effort, or their opponents decide to quit trying to be good, the outcomes are not going to change. and no coach, nor any coaching philosophy, is going to change that.

On the other hand, it has been recognized on this forum that the area from Franklin County, Tullahoma, Coffee Co, Warren County is an area that needs something to help High School programs. It is between Murfreesboro and Chattanooga and maybe not convenient to programs to help high schools. Somebody listening that has a suggestion??????????

More intrigue in the Tullahoma girls program. Rumor control says that a meeting is taking place this pm to discuss what to do about Coach Seals. Parents and interested adults are upset with his treatment of players. Is changing coaches really the answer? Again, look at the feeder schools and they have won a combined two games thus far and East beat West in their first game. East has 8 players and a new coach while West has the same coach for the last three seasons, I believe. Coach Seals should be frustrated and if that manifests itself into a tough stance taken with his team, that would be acceptable as long as the language did not include profanity. THS has no post game, limited dribble penetrators, and a bunch of catch and shoot girls that are small. They have not grown much or improved much since the 8th grade. Plus the psyche of THS girls is thin because no one in the school or community really expect them to win. Meaning it is easy to give up and/or to look for someone else to blame and it is easy to blame the coach. Coaches are hired to be fired, but Coach Seals has not been given enough time. There is no easy or quick fix and any immediate help does not appear to be on the horizon. The highly educated persons attending this meeting won't be around in two or more years. These people are the now and winning is not going to happen. Frankly, there is not enough talent, strong work ethic, dedication/commitment, and support from the community/school to produce even a mediocre 12-12 record. The situation is not hopeless; just difficult to say the least. Give Coach Seals five years, make changes at the middle schools espcecially at West, allow him to work with the players that are willing to work as much as he can; the culture of girls basketball must change from the ground up before you will see any significant improvement. Why would a 6th grader or outstanding 5th grader, and they are out there, want to play for THS? Parents, today, would drive 30-50 miles to give their daugther the opportunity to play on a competitive and contending team. The results of today's meeting should be shared with Mr. Landis and from there with Coach Seals and that is as far as it should go, but stranger things have happened. It is funny a coach at the middle school, a great teacher, can lose 19 of 20 games let's say and keep the coaching job and a high school coach with no material gets fired for venting to players that get most of the quality playing time and can't produce even though they are good kids. Look at Coach Muckle at Coffee, he is winning a few games with smoke and mirrors, i.e. little talent. But Coach Muckle is relentless and knowledgeable; a tireless worker and he has an AD that is behind him 100%. Watch out parents your meddling might help CC beat you next time and therefore send you on that long, winding, cold ride down Hwy 64 for a date with L'burg in the district tournament first round, and the uniforms go up again til next season.

Just wondering..when was the last time Tullahoma won?

Their last win was December 20 against Signal Mountain. They have had 2 other wins this season - one against Moore Co. and one against Coffee County. The Coffee Co. win was their first District win in several years. Their current record is 3-14 (1-6 in the District). They have had 7 straight losses. Their next 5 games are District games. Good luck Lady Wildcats!

Many of the "highly educated" and hard working parents of the current players have more than one child in the Tullahoma School System. The lack of talent, the lack of a strong work ethic, and the lack of dedication are the attributes of the current coach rather than the girls. Quite frankly, Coach Seals has been given too much time with these girls and too much time with the program.

These girls have not given up on basketball just on the coach. Many of them have played basketball in the THS system since middle school. There are some talented young ladies on the team so "no material" has no merit in this forum. Coach Seals demoralizes, manipulates, and humiliates so he can perpetuate the losing program and blame his losing record on rebuilding. It buys him more time to become tenured. He sits back on his laurels and gets anyone he can to coach the girls.

Whether Tullahoma Basketball girls win or lose another game, it is in the best interest of any child in the basketball program to be protected from this man. By the way, he uses profanity too. I bet the girls could play better on their own than to have him as a coach.

By the way, looking out for the best interest of the children is in no way meddling. It is the responsibility of parents, administration, and the community to protect the children and we have allowed this to go on far too long!
