How in the world is Oak Ridge ranked #2 in the entire southeast region, but is #4 in the state poll? The Tennessee A.P. voters have no idea what's going on out there in the rest of the nation. If they did they would realize that OR has already beaten two nationally ranked teams, and hung with two teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation. All I can say is....WOW. I do, however, think that Memphis Central and Wilson Central should be there. Not sure yet about Millington. They got whipped by Lausanne.

BTW, the USA Today poll has yet to come out. I would be willing to bet that OR is in the top 25 in that poll as well.

Why can we not understand that rankings mean NOTHING. The state tournament in March is all that matters.

Rankings do mean something. IMO, they gauge the progress of the teams; ultimately they will determine who is making progress toward even being relevant in March. Half of the journey is getting there, isn't it? Plus, nature abhors a vacuum....we gotta do something in the meantime besides show up at the games, support our teams, yell till we're hoarse, gripe about the referees....well, you get where I'm going....it's just fun and it's a part of the season. Each team wants to know what they will face in March. Don't gamblers check a horse's record (strengths and weaknesses) before placing a bet? Nothing personal, it's just part of the business of high school, college, and professional basketball.

To be ranked in the in top 50 to me is a great acomplishment! These kids play tough schedules anytime u play good competition. It builds character and mindset to be the best u can be. I agree each team wants to know who they will play come March. If they tough teams through the year they will be ready! I said great job girls!!

Polls should just be taken for what they are. They are people that have more than likely never seen a team play judging them based on records. As stated by OmahaVol, how can Oak Ridge be ranked 2 in the SE but 4 in the state. The next USAToday poll comes out this Wednesday and I am interested to see the changes after the Christmas Tournaments. To show another way that polls make no sense, USAToday had OR ranked at 7th before the Christmas Tournaments for several weeks (ranking 25 teams). The ESPN poll did not have OR ranked in the top 50 until after their Christmas Tournament in Phoenix. While in Phoenix, Oak Ridge played a great team, Regis Jesuit, CO. They had 8 D-1 commitments and only 4 girls under 6'1" and yet they were not ranked at all.

So yes, it is an accomplishment to be proud of making these national polls, but they should not be taken very far as to how good some teams really are.

Fellow Coach T posters,

It amazes me the way people either put down the polls or praises the polls.

Praises are always a direct result of said people agreeing with where their team is ranked.

Put down of the polls are when said people disagree with where their team is ranked.

Bottom line is that polls are subjective to the people that cast their votes (key word is people), which mean they maybe dead on or way off with their vote.

Regardless if we won't admit it or not, we all look for the rankings in some shape, form or fashion to verify, confirm or anoint our team's success. For the people whose team has achieved such kudos they look for the polls, but not necessarily to confirm their thoughts. For the people whose team has achieved success for the first time, the polls are very big in confirming their thoughts.

All and all polls are just various outlets (newspapers, online services, individuals) way of talking up the game. Some are somewhat accurate and others have no business doing it. Polls are just an in season gauge of where teams stand (be it right or wrong). They are needed because they keep the buzz going.

They also give the teams a pat on the back for doing well at that particular point of the season. Which we all know it's how you finish, that counts!

Just my thoughts on this subject

So GOOD LUCK 2 EVERYONE!!!

Now lets see, the people that are voing on this might be dead. How are they going to see the game? or maybe they'll have a better view. Well all of that doesn't matter. Good explanation. We'll try to keep up with it a while and see what kind of sense it makes. The poll makers have to be tired. At least this have nothing to do with the presidental election, we don't even have to have a recount.
