It was a very successful opener for the Jackson County Blue Devils Friday night as they defeated Houston County 54-7 in Erin. It was a game where all phases of the game contributed but one that also gave the Blue Devils thnigs to work on for the future.

Jeret Goad completed 15 of 16 passes for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns. The only incompletion was actually completed but the receiver was ruled to have come down out of bounds.

Patrick Davis rushed for 108 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown. In addition Kaleb Allen scored 3 touchdowns, one each receiving, rushing and on a punt return.

Chance Ragland scorded a touchdown rushing and another on one of his 2 fumble returns and Colby Fox had 12 tackles including 3 for losses. Ethan Bean added 11 tackles and Alex Ragland 9 to lead the team.

The receving corps were balanced with Allen having 5 catches for 58 and a score, freshman Blake Bowman 3 for 35, Ethan Kirby 3 for 18, Hobie Leonard 2 for 27 and a score and Jordan Godwin 1 for 41 and a touchdown. All of this without Senior wide receiver Chris stafford having a catch. Stafford led the team a year ago and has been recovering from a leg injury although he did play Friday night and is getting back to his old form.

Allen's punt return was good for 80 yards, while Justin Stewart punted only once for 53 yards.

It was a total team effort and was an culmination of the hard work in the pre-season. Everyone involved with the program contributed to this win, from the quarterback club that paid for the chartered buses, to all the fans who came, to the girls who serve as managers, to the band and the cheerleaders, and all the players and the coaches, and everyone else who just lended their support to the team.

The Blue Devils are now getting ready to host Community next Friday in Gainesboro. It will be Community's opening game.

Wow Jackson Co. sounds like they may be for real. Or was Houston Co. that bad. What is Jackson Co. doing on Offense and Defense to score 54 points and only give up 7. The new coaching staff is making an immediate impact on the kids it looks like. l guess its time for the rest of us in their region to stop taking them lightly. However we all know they still have a long way to go to match the girls basketball progam, who is king or should l say QUEEN in Gainesboro.

A close look at the stat sheet for those who were not there shows that the starters for Jackson County exited the game when the running clock began midway through the 3rd quarter. The Blue Devils attempted no passes in the final 16 minutes of the game and only ran 35 offensive plays in the entire game thanks mainly to the running clock. The final 2 touchdowns were, one, a punt return, and two, a busted play where the backup quarterback ran some 42 yards for the score.

The Houston County score came in the closing moments of the contest after it was 54-0.

Funny how the talk goes from Jackson County being a laughing stock in football to running up the score so quickly. No truth to that whatsoever and anyone at the game would know that. It is an improving team but still has a ways to go to compete in the toughest 1A-2A Super Region in Tennessee. Next up is Community High School in the home opener. Best of luck to Houston County for the rest of the season.

Congrats to Jackson County

I was a witness and can tell anyone, Jackson County did not try to run up the score at all, things just went their way, 70+ yard punt return, bad kick coverage for the Irish gave them a short field to work on, bad pass coverage with no pressure on the Jackson Co. QB, etc.

And on that Jackson Co. QB, very impressive. does not throw a great ball, but throws patterns 10 yards and in, and lets his receivers do the work, yards after the catch, very impressed with their timing and teamwork. Best of luck to the Blue Devils this season

The QB for JC is only a sophomore and one of the best I've seen. He throws an accurate pass with good timing. He didn't have to throw more than 10 yards during this game. The only incomplete pass of the game was actually a completed 20 yard + completion, the receiver was ruled out of bounds. The papers said he was 15-16. He must throw a good ball. During pre-season, he was just as accurate on a 40 yard pass. Their back up QB looked pretty good as well. Looks like JC has some excellent receivers. Should have a good team for a few years. Good luck JC!!
