How would you seed these four teams?

It may seem "magical," but the formula I'm using is completely open-source. I'll put my implementation up on googledocs or iwork.com in a day or two.

Not saying it is 'magical' - I just think to salvage the current district formats that everyone loves for the regular season we need a very simple, easy to understand and easy to figure out system for next year. Have you looked at the playoff plan thread to see mine?

Saw it, but still thinking it may put too much emphasis on the classification of your opponents. May tend to damage teams from areas like mine where a lot of your good teams aren't 6A.

But my concern is just the opposite. How is it fair to a Siegel or Lavergne being a district with ONLY 6A teams?

I tried to come up with a system where win, regardless of who you play, gets you somewhere. Win your district - you are in - no questions asked. But then some non-subjective way to help level the playing field of who plays who. Keeping the (1-9) and (3-7) teams out should make sure more (6-4) and (5-5) teams get in.

And knowing this may have an impact on scheduling after next year?? This year there was no deterrent whatsoever to schedule decisions.

Pick some teams and lets do it together and see what we come up with.

Here is how Ooltewah's looks:

Formula: 100+wins of opponent for a win against team of same class, -20 for each lower class, +20 for each higher class ; 5 times wins of opponent, REGARDLESS OF CLASSIFICATION (The Alcoa factor) ; 2 times wins of opponent ONLY if same class or higher. I am treating D2-1 as 6A and D2-2 as 3A - fair?

Ooltewah (9-1)

Tyner Academy 36-0 (3A) (6-4) 46 30 0

Austin-East 7-6 (3A) (7-3) 47 35 0

Soddy Daisy 21-14 (6A) (5-5) 105 25 10

Franklin 19-3 (6A) (8-2) 108 40 16

McMinn Co. 17-20 (6A) (8-2) 0 40 16

Saw it, but still thinking it may put too much emphasis on the classification of your opponents. May tend to damage teams from areas like mine where a lot of your good teams aren't 6A.

I know - but the post-season is for the 6A playoffs. Schedule some 6A non-district games to make up for it.

But the reason I came up with the numbers I did was try to find as much fairness as possible.

Examples:

a 6A Ooltewah wins against a (1-9) 5A White County

((100-20) + 1) + (5*1) + (2*0) that win would garner them 86

they then play an (8-2) 4A team and win

((100-40) + 8 ) + (5 * 8) + (2 * 0) would get them 108

so playing a good 4A team is better than playing a bad 5A team

best thing to do is to play a (5-5) 6A team though

(100 + 5) + (5 * 5) + (2 * 5) would be worth 140

It is inherently unfair to allow teams to play different classifications than others without some measuring stick to reward teams for playing in their class or higher. With this current system Vanderbilt could play 3 Sunbelt Teams, a Southern Conference Team and 2 Conference USA teams and count them as wins to qualify for the SEC championship game.

Actually, the plan is for all classes :roflol:

I think if we're going to have a point system, something established like Ohio's Harbin system or New Jersey's power points might be a better way to go. I'll run those.

Yes, it is for all classes . I have tried to get my hands around Ohio's systems http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/ft/boys/rankcalc.htm but IMHO it doesn't differentiate enough between classifications.

To play in a 6A playoff, you should have to play at least a few 6A teams (See Brighton, went from 0-1 to 0-2 for the year against 6-A teams tonight)

Same hold true for 5A, 4A and etc.. 4A teams playing 2A teams is not fair either... You can play down, but the reward for doing so should not be the same than that for a team that doesn't.

In Pod 1, 6AAA I had seeding of

1) D4-Maryville (9-1) Only loss was to 10-0 3A Power Alcoa. 4-0 against teams in 6A playoffs

2) D4-Farragut (8-2) Only losses are to Maryville and 6A playoff team Riverdale Wins over 3 other 6A playoff teams.

3) D2-Sevier Co (10-0) Only played one team with a winning record (5A Morristown West)

4) D5-McMinn Co (8-2) lost to D2 McCallie (4-6) and Maryville. wins over playoff teams Ooltewah (9-1) and Cookeville (7-3)

5) D5-Ooltewah (9-1) wins over 2 3A teams and a 4A team and a (1-9) 5A team

6) D4-Bearden (8-2) lost to Maryville and Farragut but those were the only teams they played with a winning record.

7) D3 Oak Ridge (7-3) three losses all to playoff teams (Farragut, Maryville, Clinton) (see a pattern and why Maryville and Farragut are 1 and 2?)

8) D1-Dobyns Bennett (5-5) all five losses to playoff teams with a combined record of (45-4) win over (8-2) 5A Sullivan South.

How they fared:

#1 Maryville beat #8 Dobyns Bennett 41-0

#2 Farragut beat #5 Ooltewah 24-7

#3 Sevier Co lost to #6 Bearden 34-35

#4 McMinn Co beat #7 Oak Ridge 12-7

So seeding (8-2) Bearden higher than 8th seemed fair. Seeding (10-0) Sevier Co lower than Maryville and Farragut seem fair now and a #3 vs #6 played a close game and a #4 vs #7 played a close game but a #1 won 41-0 over a #8 and a #2 won by double digits over a #5 - so the seedings in hindsight seem pretty close to being fair????

I guess one reason I want to go with the 100 (-20 for each class lower or +20 for each class higher) is that Ohio's system makes a win over the highest classification equal 6 points, regardless of what class you are. So here, using that system, a 6A team beating a 6a team gets the same credit as a 5A team beating a 6A team - I think the 5A team should get more credit for playing up in class. See what I mean?
