True freshman and former Ooltewah state champion Jake Young won the 174 pound class Sunday at Va. Tech's Hokie Open.

Young won five matches, including a 3-1 win (takedown at the buzzer) against No. 2 seed Eric Decker (Old Dominion) in the finals. Decker is a senior and a 2009 NCAA qualifier.

The Mocs made a good showing in the one-day event as seven other Mocs were medalists.

Wright earned a spot in the championship semis, while the other six wrestlers reached the championship quarterfinals.

UTC wrestlers who won at least one match were Josh Sandoval (133), Ben Johnson (141), Seth Seneca (149), Dean Pavlou (149, consolation quarters), Cody Stokes (157), Kelly Felix (157), Mikey Fuller (165), Josh Condon (165, consolation quarters), Cameron Couch (174), Tyler Roberson (184), Niko Brown (197) and Matt Lettner (285).

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
    • I heard Alabama was at Antioch practice and Colorado has offered QB. Hoping the Bears have a great year.
