Bands playing during game action...

Well, I got to experience what some of you were talking about at the Maryville - White Station game last night in Cookeville and it was very enlightening.

What was the net effect? The fans were taken out of the game. Maryville's fans outnumbered White Station's 10-1, but there is no need to yell and make noise when no one can hear you due to the 300+ piece band playing across the stadium from you at full volume.

Umm there's 180 of us

I notice a bunch of east TN'ers complaining. This is probably a direct correlation to some East TN counties having to dissolve their band programs due to ignorance and lack of support. Here in Mid TN and apparently in West TN, we still get it. As stated in my earlier post, I love football as much as anybody, but what do you think came first? Football or Marching Band? That's right the Marching band.[/quote

congratulations....that probably doubles your football team...and thats what people come to see...don't believe me? why do people wait to halftime to go to the bathroom, or get concessions? because they don't care to see the band perform, and they'd rather miss that than the football game. this happens at all levels...except of course the band parents, i'm sure they'd rather watch there kids play.

and according to some research. the purdue marching band was the first marching band in college....and that was in 1886.

football was first played in 1869.

therefore marching band came after the football...unless your considering "marching band" the dudes that played a horn or a drum in battles....

someone, idk if it was you....made the statement that marching band started before football. so i was just fixing it...personally, i was a player...and i could care less about the band...I just think its unsportsmanlike, i have no problem with bands outside the play of the game. and ill keep going back to college, if they felt it was right for bands to play during the game action, they would allow it....and people say blah blah their bands are much bigger and louder, but their not in the comparrison of the stadium, and how many MORE fans are in there. crowd noise is supose to be the 12th man, not the band. the band should be their to celebrate big plays...take UTK, they score. rockeytop. the crowd goes crazy. it doesnt take the whole game to have the fans get into the band.

The modern marching band is a direct decendant of the military band. Music has been played for marching long before there was football. During WWII many football teams were shut down for the war, but guess what continued? Marching Bands. Nobody on here is arguing the fact of band vs. football. The issue that I and others have is when people make ignorant comments about the band programs and they know absolutely NOTHING about what is involved. I can talk X's and O's so I am on this board. Do you know the notes of a B-flat concert scale? NO. So don't speak of what you do not know.

been playing guitar my whole life, and taken a lot of theory classes my friend...i know music pretty well

never heard of it as a "concert scale" but im guess you mean a bflat major scale. which would consist of...

b-C-D-Eb-F-G-A

its reletive minor would be the G minor scale.

if i wanted to get in a music debate i would go on over to the band forum...

For the record Maryville fans who want to complain about bands playing. Check your own public address announcer and see how often he starts to make announcements when the opposing teams quarterback is about to go under center. 2 out of three years that I visited your stadium I noticed this. So quit your complaining about a band playing until your own announcer waits until their is a stoppage of play to make announcements about parking, concession stand items or other information that really can wait.

You have a class program and a very classy coach. It's just too bad that the majority of your fans could not find the CLASS to represent the whole program like your coaching staff and players do.

The band is there because there is a football game in progress. Know your role and shut up the playing while action is on the field. Timeouts...between plays...halftime... that's when you should be saw and heard.

JMO folks. As for the band parents/supporters that run the concessions and receive the funds made from sales............upgrade the food!!!!!! Enough of that you low quality over priced slop that you feed us...... :thumb: Give me something that I look forward to. I promise to spend more dollars to reflect your efforts.

Not to call anybody out

BUT

I have never been to a Marching Band Contest and a football game beaks out at half Time!

    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
    • This whole situation is bonkers. You don’t just kick your star player off the team just because you heard them say the F word; the coach definitely had something against the player, or somebody definitely did. Also, nobody has brought up the idea that the school blackmailed the college to get the college to withdraw the scholarship offer, not to mention that the coach who kicked her off is no longer even with the program; they were fired. I think this is a pretty easy lawsuit. I don’t know if she should deserve that much money, but I think she should get enough money for a full-ride scholarship if she cannot get one after this situation.
    • Oh yeah, I’m sure you are different people just always on the same thread for some reason, always agreeing with each other, perhaps just a bunch of dorks who would like to ###### and moan about high school football coaches do a lot of other students, so you make a football team and get a yell at them. When they do something wrong, but I’m sure you don’t like that, do you?   and I’m sure I’m aware of where you get information. A teacher who was on the coaching staff but was fired after the new coaching and staff came in and realized he actually had to start taking his assistant job a little bit more seriously than just wanting to make a little extra cash on the side, hardly even showing up to most practices, should’ve left with his buddy to go to Farragut. I’m sure he could get him a defensive coaching job, but I doubt he will be there in three years. Looking at the way Farragut is currently going.
    • It may be hard to believe but there’s more people than me that think you guys are a bunch of losers.    I’m sure the coaching staff, yourself included, cursed at a bunch of high school students. Nobody could name more than 3 coaches on staff due to the constant turnover.
