I really hate to see that. We've all looked at them at some point, and I'd bet the house that those who criticized the ratings over the years were back looking at them the next week to see where their team was rated. As much as ratings can be criticized, those that provide them are attempting to weed out all of our individual preferences for and biases against certain teams to make a realistic, data-driven case for best in class/state.

 

So, to you, Earl Nall, my hat is off to you.

I interacted quite a bit with Earl Nall in his previous life, when he was an Information Technology guru in Oak Ridge. In fact, his steadfast dedication to the Perl programming language was an important factor in my project's decision to develop a major application in Perl that is still in use today (14 years later).

 

He is a class act, and he has shown great dedication to TSSAA over the years. I followed the Prep Performance Ratings closely over the years. They were both informative and fun to argue with. As crawdad correctly stated, by playoff time, the Rating's point differentials were spot on.
