This is unfortunate but with the late history of unruly athletic contests in Shelby County, what would make anyone think that going thru something like this would not cause some tough sanctions. The issue can be brought before the TSSAA Board of Control but this sanction, as some have not, means that the TSSAA means business and will not tolerate the actions. It looks like, if things keep occuring, that Districts in far west Tennessee can expect fewer schools participating in Sports. No one is immune. Quick action by game officials likely stopped further problems.

It was obvious that the amount of time that was spent on the investigation of this incident that this is the second of the emphasis on not condoning activities like this in sporting events but likely will be followed up by explaining to game officials that they should not let games get out of control in any way so that schools will not have to go thru sanctions and players not be able to play for their school.

The biggest problem I see at baseball games is a lack of security. There's typically a rent-a-cop at basketball games and football games because there's generally a larger crowd. It wouldn't take much for things to get out of hand, particularly with rivals. Heard a coach yell "Good place to miss!" after a batter got plunked between the numbers. That came close to inciting the crowd. Umpires don't want to be in the middle of a brawl and I can't say I blame them.

There needs to be some education on 3 or 4 fronts. Coaches ultimately are responsible for the actions of their players and staff. There needs to be a clear understanding of what is expected of them when they are representing their school. Players should sign a contract, take a class on sportsmanship or whatever it takes to keep their emotions in check when they are playing. Parents need to keep their mouths shut for the most part. If you aren't encouraging your team and the players on that team, you're not adding anything to the equation. Parents incite more oftentime than not with a loud mouth in the stands berating the other team and calling out players. They're kids for Christ's sake. Quit living your life through your kid! Umpires can sit teams on the bench and refuse to continue until order is restored instead of running to the parking lot. Do it sooner rather than later. Set the tone of the game and what will be tolerated.

Most of this is Golden Rule kind of stuff that you shouldn't have to take a tutorial on. Right from wrong is not that blurry of a line. When you find yourself on the wrong side of it, the hammer should fall. It's a tough life lesson to the innocent that get caught in the middle, but...........oh well. You are in school to get an education. Athletics is an earned privilege that is the icing on the top. If you don't do what you're supposed to do in the manner that's expected of you, you shouldn't be surprised when those privileges are recinded.

Sounds like it was way overdue with Houston, maybe a wake-up call for those folks yakking from the stands. Doubt anyone misses the Houston crowd at tournament time.
