King Ranked No. 1 in WCWA Rankings for First Time in School History

The WCWA College preseason rankings were released on Tuesday night. For the first time in school history, King held the top spot while two held individual No. 1 rankings.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – For the first time in its four-year history, the King College Women's Wrestling team has achieved a WCWA national No. 1 ranking. In the Women's College Wrestling Association (WCWA) preseason poll released Tuesday night, the King Lady Tornado was named the No. 1 team in the nation while two of its individuals were tabbed preseason favorites in their respective weight classes.

The preseason rankings naming King the top team in the country marks the first time King held the No. 1 spot in its history. The Lady Tornado dethroned the four-time defending team champion Oklahoma City University Stars who had possessed the top spot for much of the time since the WCWA's inception. The Stars are ranked second in the country with Lindenwood, Simon Fraser, and Cumberlands rounding out the top-5, in that order.

The team rankings are constructed as a by-product of the individual rankings. King and OCU both have two returners ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes, but the Tornado's depth at multiple divisions helped them achieve a higher team ranking than the defending champions.

Junior World Team member Sarah Hildebrandt was named the No. 1 wrestler at the 123-pound division. The sophomore from Granger, Ind. was the runner up in her weight class at the 2012 WCWA Championships and was one of the three participants at the most recent Junior World Team Championships in Pattaya, Thailand in September.

Also ranked the top wrestler in her weight class was sophomore Krista Revelle (Meriden, Kan.) in the 136-pound division. Revelle stormed onto the scene last year and in her first collegiate competition advanced all the way to the 136-pound championship match where she defeated Stephanie Geltmacher for the title. She met teammate Alli Ragan in the 136-pound finals at the 2012 Body Bar Championship but lost, placing her in the Junior Pan-Am games. Due to an injury, she was unable to compete but has all the motivation and health to return to defend her title.

Defending national champion Emily Martin(Frisco, Texas) was granted an extra year of eligibility by the WCWA and will also get the chance to defend her title in the 109-pound division. She comes in ranked the No. 2 wrestler in her weight class after the return of Simon Fraser's Victory Anthony, who took an Olympic redshirt last year.

Junior World bronze medalist Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) enters the 2012-13 season ranked No. 2 in the 143-pound division and will attempt to improve upon her runner-up finish at the 2012 WCWA Championships.

Other notable individual placements include Julia Salata (Canton, Mich.) who currently ranks third at 155 pounds. Katarina Perez (130#), Amber Floyd (191#), and Shannon Constantine (101#) all are ranked third in their respective weight classes.

King has a stronghold on the 116- and 123-pound weight classes, placing three inside the top-10 of each.

A total of 17 individuals from the Lady Tornado team were ranked in the top-10 of their respective weight class, including freshmen Malexis McAdoo (Amarillo, Texas) at 191 pounds and Marina Sanchez (Riverside, Calif.) at 101 pounds. McAdoo Sanchez is the only King freshman to receive a preseason ranking.

King will engage in their annual Navy vs. Scarlet intrasquad match on Oct. 9 and begin their season on Oct. 20 in a classic No. 1 versus No. 2 dual match with the Oklahoma City Stars in Oklahoma City. King's lone home meet will be held on Nov. 3 when they host Missouri Baptist and No. 5 Cumberlands.

    • I have no clue if Derek tried to talk some since into his dad or not about staying here. All he is going to accomplish is going from the oven to the frying pan. If I were the coach all Ale would freze over before I set back and watched one of my good players leave without a fight.
    • If this is true, South Gibson is taking a big chance. Passing on an experienced coach for a guy who has never coached at the high school level is a high risk move, especially in that district and region.
    • Dorian Eskridge was HVA's best back, 2011
    • Jo Byrns was a very solid team last year. Imo, I thought they presented the biggest challenge for us on our path to winning it all last year. I expect them to be in the conversation and one of the final few teams playing in Murfreesboro
    • I'm not sure you understand anything if you think DB's career and AD's career are comparable.  This is a terrible take.   Not to slight AD, He was a good player and he got better as he matured after high school.   But Desean had over 8,000 yards in HS and was a two-time Mr. Football.
