King College advance to the championship final match for season opener

King Women's Wrestling opened the 2012-13 season this weekend at the Cliff Keen Oklahoma City Duals.King dressed two teams at the OCU duals, allowing many young faces get a taste of major competition, for many, their first. Picking up their first victories of their collegiate careers were Tori Degginger(Port St. Lucie, Fla.), Hanna Martin (El Reno, Okla.), Vanessa Gomez(Baldwin Park, Calif.), and Evalyn Reyna(Austin, Texas). Degginger went 3-0 in the tournament to lead the Scarlett team, tallying a pin in her first collegiate bout 1:32 in the second period.

Victoria Nguyen(Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill H.S.) had a flawless day with the Scarlett team, going 5-0 with a pair of technical falls to her resume.

 

The Lady Tornado, ranked No. 1 in the country by the WCWA, advanced to the gold bracket finals to meet eventual tournament champion and host, Oklahoma City University. Emily Martin won all six of her bouts to lead the team over the two-day tournament.The championship round of the dual tournament pitted the matchup many were waiting for with No. 1 King facing off against four-time national champion and tournament host, No. 2 Oklahoma City University. Emily Martin registered a big win by decision over Kristi Garr, 2-2, 4-3, but early loses by Constantine and Samantha Klingel put King in an 8-4 hole. Sarah Hildebrandt went three rounds with her opponent before earning a win by decision, closing the gap to two points. OCU earned two straight wins by decision before Krista Revelle defeated Stephanie Geltmacher (1-0, 1-0) to bring King back within reach, 15-10.The five-point deficit was as close to the defending team champions as King would get. The Stars won the 155, 170, and 191-pound bouts to run away with a 26-10 victory in the championship round, crowning them tournament champions.

Defending national champion Emily Martin went a perfect 6-0 in her bouts, tallying three pins and two technical falls over the two-day tournament. Fellow national champion Krista Revelle went a combined 5-1, earning one fall, one technical fall, and two wins by decision.

Sophomore Sarah Hildebrandt also went undefeated over the weekend, going 5-0. Three of her five victories were done so by decision. She registered one fall during the weekend.

Sophomore Julia Salata and junior Katarina Perez also each went 5-1. Salata earned wins in each of her first five bouts on the weekend, including one fall and one technical fall. Perez followed the same course, winning her first five bouts while recording two pins and one technical fall.

 

 

King (5-1) will host two duals on Nov. 3 in their next action. The Lady Tornado will bring Missouri Baptist and No. 5 University of the Cumberlands to the Student Center Complex with bouts beginning at 9 a.m.
