Why split divisions in wrestling?

I understand splitting divisions for duals, but why don't they just let all the kids wrestle for an individual championship?

Really? You've never heard this discussion/debate before? Like 2-3 times every year for the last 15 years or so. Literally tens of thousands of posts over this exact topic? I don't think there has been a single new or original idea on this debate in over a decade, just recycled banter with neither side ever giving an inch.

And wait until next year when they split public school individuals into A-AA and AAA instead if just one public.

WilliamsonCo - it's split into two currently public and private. Private schools can "recruit" and the kids are on scholarship, even though some schools will deny it. Public schools are zoned and kids are usually assigned to that school district. That's my take why it's split. I have other reasons why but those are my opinions Ill keep to myself. No need to start an Internet bashing on here.

Thanks ut18vols. But for the individual tournament, why does it matter? Who cares where a kid goes to school? I wish they would just open it up and let there be no question who is the best wrestler.

Excellent question Williamsoncounty. Most people don't understand the concept of the word "individual".

Here's the problem... It's a traditional tournament where team awards are given... Therefore there are team implications. That's why there is such a polarized opinion base on the issue. This dead horse has no more hide to beat... Both sides want it their way.

I believe in Georgia, they have four classifications A-AAAA and the week after state championship, they have the State Open. All four champions are seeded 1-4 in each weight class, in a one day tournament to declare the true state champion.

Thank McCallie, they're the main reason for the split as far back as 1997.
