HAHA Real World Scouting says................................you better enjoy now, because you won't say that same line next year.

Good Luck to all the 8A teams this year. Gonna miss a few things

1. Making FCS coaching staff scratch their heads and wonder what I was gonna do next. Hey, don't make me break phantom ball out of retirement. Will never forget Coach Mac helping me out with scouting reports for the Chattanooga teams and having both of us in Memphis representing District 8A. I am so glad Coach Lowe "attacked" me with his cast in '05. He bought into my jedi motivation trick to fire up my club, get tossed, have my dad pay $250 fine, mow my field while we played Westmoreland for a regional birth, and enjoying one of the best wins of my tenure while never seeing a pitch. That ejection jumped us to our school's first state tournament. It also got Coach Rick Miller a chewing from me.....more of a rant.

2. Getting everyone in a Watertown crowd fired up and hollering over "The Bat Rule Strikes Back"

Had some classic, nerve-pinching good ones with the Tony The Tiger Club. Sent Coach Lutrell into administration. I loved playing him. A dang good coach but a better guy. Rowdy fan base. I loved the drama.

3. Gordonsville Gordonsville Gordonsville!!! My favorite team to play. Why? I felt we shared so much in common. Be greatful that you have Coach Petty. The guy works hard. Studies the game, and when my teams would pull one out in a loser-go-home district game, he and Coach Bennett always.....always congradulated me with class. One of the moments I remember from the state tournament in 2006 was looking into the crowd and noticing Coach Petty sitting on our side. Awesome!

4. The old Westmoreland days. Pure battle. Coach Woodard took me out to the woodshed numerous times. Yes, we pulled off a couple big ones against them, but they were the team I pulled more mental magic, more made up bulletin board material. I called them The Tater Haters. I basically made them out to be the Germans of 1944.

I'll miss it. Yeah, FCS is the class but they ought to be, and I mean that with no disrespect. I watched District 8A grow and become more competitive over the past 11 years.

I was so blessed and pretty darn lucky to make 8 straight regionals and two state championship tournament appearances. But, I can honestly say the best part was becoming lifelong friends and supporters of coaches, players, and even parents throughout the district. When you walk to a bus after the final game of the district tournament and a grandparent and parent of an opposing team hollers at you to stop, walks up, extends their hand, and tells you that they think you do a ton with just a little and that their children would play for you any day, and that they love your energy a love for a game, you have been crowned a champion.

Nothing like gameday of a District 8A game. ......except when Sweeney and Chunk are in the other lineup :0

Best of luck to you all. May you all pursue your dreams. darn it, I did!

I will leave you with this quote I came up with during the final week of the 2006 regular season when I thought my club was quitting on me when I knew we were a state tournament type team.

"You can't stop the sand from running out no matter what, but you CAN control what you do with each grain."

RBS will have their 4th coach in 4 years, they've got some pretty good young talent I just hope this guy can develop some if it. Over there in 7a Monterey should take back there thrown on top of the district. FCS will finish out on top in 8a as per usual and who knows will finish 2nd... It's been a while since 8a sent both teams to substate so hopefully they can get over that hump this year...

    • Actually that young kid was in an offense that loved to throw the ball I believe.    Biggest problem for MC is if the coaching staff can figure out which mouths to feed at the appropriate time.
    • Have you ever been in education (administration) or a head coach? You’re responsible for all aspects of your program. If you were not checking the kids information correctly and left it up to someone else and they mess up. You’re held liable because it’s a failure on supervision, implementation of TSSAA eligibility and your school’s eligibility. Remember the wording in the article for him “CONTRACT NOT RENEWED” coaches are on a year to year contract and don’t sign the contract again until July. Do I believe he still should’ve been let go? Yes because you’re responsible for the total program and should be aware of everything going on. Do I believe he knew about the grade changes? No and that’s because nobody brought his name up until things got really bad and there is no indication with any paperwork showing he did. It’s just word of mouth from a teacher trying to cover herself.
    • TSSAA won't ever issue a death penalty, worst case scenario would be a post-season penalty that makes Clinton ineligible for the playoffs for a year or two (I believe 3 years is the most I have ever seen).  But TSSAA only does that in extremely rare circumstances.
    • I just want to echo that sentiment. Coach Woodmore is a good man and he is going to do things the right way and expect these kids to do things the right way. He will help grow them into fine young men. The wins will follow. I think Bolivar hit a home run.
