NCAA Natl's watch...

Once again the Big Ten beats up on each other and has top seeded wrestlers scattered throughout.

Penn State looking good for #3 and will likely do it once again...

I heard David Taylor is seeded second, after winning last year’s NCAA Championship with absolutely NO CHALLENGE! Taylor teched the third-seeded Peter Yates twice last season, and he had an impressive mjr decision over fourth-seeded Tyler Caldwell in Chatt town. Of course... Top-seeded Kyle Dake is Taylor’s biggest foe at NCAAs. Dake has now beaten Taylor three times in the past year: at the Olympic Trials, running from Taylor at the NWCA All-Star classic in OT - but scoribg when it mattered most, and then a close one with a couple of controversial calls at the Southern Scuffle. What a prelude to this years most anticupated match up!!!

As any of us know, Dake is seeking his fourth NCAA Championship (record most in multiple weight classes), and Taylor hopes to beat Dake for the first time ever, unless they met in HS.

NEWS FLASH... Due to the quality of this matchup, the NCAA tournament will begin at the 174 weight class and finish at the 165 weight class... So set your recording scheduling accordingly!

A few of you may not have caught this... Freshman Garrett of Cornell upsets 2x Nat's champ McDonough in the quarters. Taylor pins all so far 27 seconds in the quarters and Dake unscored upon.

Did everyone see World Champion Gordon Connell at mat side with the Cornell coaches!! Without a video camera?!? :)

Release: 03/22/2013

Complete Results

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team ended its run in the NCAA Championships in consolation action today.  The Mocs lost all three of their consolation matches this afternoon.

Junior Alex Hudson (Marietta, Ga.) took on No. 6 Dylan Ness of Minnesota in the 149-pound bracket.  Hudson quickly scored a takedown to go up 2-0 in the first period.  Ness reversed and caught Hudson on his back, earning a pin at the 2:30 mark. Hudson’s season ends with a 16-7 overall record and his first trip to the NCAAs.

Senior Josh Condon (Marietta, Ga.) faced Nebraska’s Austin Wilson in his consolation second round match.   Condon started strong, posting a pair of takedowns and a reversal in the first period to go up 6-4.  An escape in the second gave him a 7-4 lead going into the final frame.  Wilson closed the gap to 7-5 after a quick escape.  He used a takedown and three back points late in the period to win the 10-7 decision.

Condon ends his season with a 13-7 record, and his second trip to the NCAAs.  He finishes his UTC career with a pair of Southern Conference Championships and a 52-24 overall record.

Senior Niko Brown (Kissimmee, Fla.) took on Binghamton’s No. 7-seed Nathan Schiedel in the second round of consolations.  Brown gave up a takedown early in the first, but quickly escaped.  He scored a takedown of his own moments later to go up 3-2.  Schiedel controlled the rest of the match, outscoring Brown 10-1 over the next two periods.  Brown gave up the fall with just under a minute left in the match.

Brown’s outstanding final season comes to an end with a 30-5 overall record, just two wins shy of the single-season top-10 all-time at UTC.  His career mark stands at 77-39, including two trips to the NCAAs and a SoCon championship.

The Mocs finish the NCAA Championships with two points and are tied for 55th overall.  Competition concludes with tomorrow’s action in Des Moines, Iowa.

Personal note: eventhough Dake has a 75 match winning streak and three straight wins over Taylor, I say? Taylor wins this one 7-5 with his drive to score big in this one!

Sommers......how about that Peter Yates.......now Georgia's 3rd multiple AA....others Witt Durden and Charlie Heard.

Yates is a great kid, good student, and only loss in high school was to Garrison Goins in the state finals of his freshman year.....in double OT. Also won Beast of the East.

Next year watch for Joey Lazor of UNI....one match from the podium this year at 141.

Ga has represented the south well.

Durden,,, a familiar name :)

Must admit... Heard, one of the best TD artists ever at UTC!

Yates finishes his storied Virginia Tech career with 131 wins, the second most in school history (two behind Sean Gray) with two All-America medals and two ACC titles. And in a conference that qualifies 25+, and has top ten finishes and several top 30!! I believe UTC did finish higher than a couple of them ACC teams though, Duke being one of them :)
