Question for a ref

Here is a classic. Player gets a yellow early in the game for a late tackle. Late in the 2nd half, commits another one, but no card is shown. Play resumes. Ball goes out of touch, and coach subs the player. Just to make sure he doesn't get another. After the match, and players have left field, the ref comes over to the player and says, I forgot to give you this. Shows a yellow, then a red.

Is this right?

No. Cards can only be shown at the next stoppage after the offense (if an advantage is allowed to play out). If that happened, that red should not stand.

That's the procedure for USSF, at least.

You are correct even for High School.

Wow, if that team won the game, then the losing coach would have a really good gripe. Because depending on the score and time left in the game, that team should have had to play short the rest of the game.

It would have been a soft red so the player would not be allowed to play but the team would not have to be shorthanded. Only a straight red results in playing with 10 men. This is one of the big differences between High School and Professional Soccer.

Online, TSSAA changed that rule this year. The team would have played down.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
