Dead Period Rule – No coaching, observing, or contact between coach and players in sport involved. There is no practice,

no open facilities, and no weight training/conditioning. The Dead Period, which is to be observed by all schools, is the week of

the 4th of July and the preceding week – 14 days.

From what I understand Coach Roberts from Beech High School is the Coach for the Wilson Central team. This is the same concept that is being used by the Junior Dual team to be able to compete during the dead period. Junior Duals and Disney Duals are both great opportunities to wrestle against some of the best HS wrestlers in the country. I applaud both of these teams for finding a way to compete at these events while still staying within the rules.

Beginning the first day of summer break 2014, there are no longer coaching restrictions for wrestling EXCEPT during the dead period. I suppose the dead period will always be. Usually it is the 2 weeks immediately following the season and the week of and before July 4.

I'll be shocked if there aren't consequences for those organized teams at Disney Duals. Because the rules for wrestling (and a couple other sports) are now so relaxed, Mr. Reeves has emphasized that the rules which are in place will be strictly enforced. Not sure how having an organized team compete in a major competition isn't in violation of the dead period. Individuals competing on their own with mixed all star teams (Junior Duals) is a completely different scenario.

I'm not following you on this. It's OK to compete on Junior Duals using a coach that isn't your actual high school coach but not Disney Duals using a coach that is not your actual HS coach? I'm quite sure that no one was forced to go to either of these events, so you could say both involve individuals competing on their own. Both are using good wrestlers from multiple teams so you could also call both all-star teams. Edited by deadlift

I just hope that those involved had enough wisdom to call the TSSAA in advance to get clarification/permission. It's my understanding that if there are more than 2 from the same team competing it is considered 'organized' competition. Any sane person that understands wrestling knows the rules are silly, but they are still the rules. The TSSAA made a very rare rule change to accommodate wrestling because so many involved complained about the restrictions. However, Mr. Reeves made it VERY CLEAR that since the restrictions were lifted, the TSSAA would have major problems if teams continued to attempt to manipulate the existing rules.

If I recal correctly, a coach last year got in tremendous trouble for simply taking a kid home after a wrestling camp because it fell during the first day of the dead period. How much more severe will the penalties be for coaches 'observing' and 'organizing' an event that clearly falls during the dead period? Personally, I could really care less what others do, I'm simply making an observation. But I'm also aware that are many out there that get great satisfaction trying to tear down other programs. Especially when their winning.

It is my understanding (let me make it clear I don't know this for fact) that one of the coaches of the Junior Duals team called for clarification. He was told because it was an All Star Event (paraphrasing), he could be present BUT he couldn't have more than one representative competing from his team or he would be in violation.

Well that's dumb. Doesn't make any sense. You're telling me that on the Junior Dual team there's only one Cleveland wrestler? Only one Bradley wrestler? That doesn't make sense. I think if it's not the coach running the team or coaching their kids in any way they're fine.

They could've chosen any name, they just chose Wilson Central. If the JR dual team chose team Cleveland Blue Raiders would we be saying the same thing on that thread?

Why should this be any different than all the travel baseball teams that are playing right now? Many of those teams have multiple kids from the same high school on them. If their coach isn't coaching them and they aren't using the schools facility's they attend then how could the Tssaa tell a kid he can't compete in the summer on his or her own free time? That would be a huge violation of consitunional rights. The dead period is to allow kids to have a break from their respective sports without their school coach " forcing " them to practice, lift, ectt.. What kids and parents chose to do on their own can't legally be dictated by any governing body and if they tried there would be a huge lawsuit. The dead period states there can't be any conditioning , open facilities ect.. If a kid wants to go to a private gym and lift weights are you suggesting this is a violation of the dead period? That would be the same as saying these kids can't compete in the junior duals, Disney duals ect..
