kwc
Week 10 prep football preview John Varlas , john.varlas@commercialappeal.com 9:25 p.m. CDT October 20, 2016 (Photo: Mark Weber/The Commercial Appeal) Ballots for the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football awards were sent to media members and coaches this week. And Shelby County should be well-represented when the semifinalists are announced next month. But nowhere more so than in Division 2-A. The small-school classification is home to some big talent this year and it would not be shocking to see three — or perhaps all four — semifinalists from Memphis. Leading the way is Lausanne's Eric Gray, the top performer on the state's fourth-ranked team. Heading into Friday, the sophomore has run for 1,370 yards on 134 carries (10.2 average) while scoring 27 touchdowns. Gray's been on a tear recently; he has 13 touchdowns in the last three games. Lausanne is the only team to defeat Harding this year and the Lions have two good candidates in seniors Marquavious Moore and Calvin Austin. Moore has 1,251 yards and 15 touchdowns through seven games while the explosive Austin (three punt return scores, one kickoff return) is a threat to go the distance on every play. Don't forget about last year's winner. Chase Hayden of St. George's is starting to come on strong after a bit of a slow start and heads into Friday with 914 yards and 16 scores. And if you want a good dark horse candidate, look no further than Rossville's Tavaris Moore. The senior leads the area in rushing at 231.8 yards per game (1,623 on a whopping 13.6 yards per carry) with 22 touchdowns. GAMES OF THE WEEK Collierville (2-6, 1-4 Region 4-6A) at (1) Whitehaven (8-0, 5-0), 7 p.m. (2) Cordova (8-0, 5-0 Region 4-6A) at Houston (4-4, 4-1), 7 p.m. Storylines: Talk around town is well underway about next week's regular season closer between Whitehaven and Cordova. But both teams have some work to do before then. Collierville's running game will be a challenge to the stout Whitehaven defense, and the Dragons historically have played the Tigers tough. Houston, meanwhile, is one of the season's most pleasant surprises and a victory over the Wolves guarantee a first-round home playoff game. Neither of the unbeatens should be overlooking their opposition Friday. OTHER DANDY DOZEN GAMES Craigmont (1-7) at (3) MUS (8-0), 7 p.m. Storylines: After a battle against Briarcrest last week, Dorian Hopkins, Bobby Wade and the rest of the Owls should find a smoother road against the Chiefs, who have played better in recent weeks after a very slow start. Manassas (0-8) at (4) Lausanne (8-0), 7 p.m. Storylines: Gray and quarterback Mario Nolan-Dillard likely won't be on the field very long as they try to burnish their resumes. Manassas has scored just 66 points all year, third-fewest among Shelby County teams. University School of Jackson (6-2) at (5) Briarcrest, 7 p.m. Storylines: A tough late-season, nonleague test for the Saints, who were in control at halftime last week at MUS before losing 21-17. Bruins' quarterback Jacob Buie has thrown for 2,485 yards and 25 touchdowns, primarily to Ryan Miller and Wells Smith. Catholic (1-7) at (6) CBHS (6-2), 7 p.m. Storylines: With MUS visiting on Oct. 28, the Brothers will get a chance to give their starters plenty of rest against the Chargers, who defeated winless BTW 14-12 last week for their only victory. Martin Luther King Prep (0-8) vs. (7) East (7-1) at the Fairgrounds, 7 p.m. Storylines: Another game that looks like a mismatch on paper. The Rams have been outscored 430-30 this season while East boasts Shelby County's seventh-ranked defense. Sheffield (0-7, 0-4 Region 8-3A) at (9) Raleigh-Egypt (8-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. Storylines: The Knights have been dangerous at times this season but it will take a monster effort to knock the Pharaohs from the unbeaten ranks. (11) Central (7-1, 5-0 Region 8-5A) vs. Overton (3-5, 0-5) at Halle, 7 p.m. Storylines: Warriors coach Lynord Crutchfield says he's still waiting for his team to put it together for a full four quarters. Overton's Brandon Willis is a dangerous back but if Central can keep the turnovers in check it should be fine. (12) Ridgeway (5-3) at Melrose (2-6), 7 p.m. Storylines: The Golden Wildcats put up their best numbers of the year last week — beating a good Bolivar Central team 53-38 — and this one could also be explosive. Ridgeway quarterback Tyrique Sandusky (222.5 yards per game, 22 touchdowns) is Shelby County's No. 3 passer while Melrose's Ahdai Paige (208.6, 22) is fourth. Line play will likely determine this one. FRIDAY'S OTHER GAMES 7 p.m. — Arlington at Bartlett, Lake Cormorant at Center Hill, Tupelo-Miss. at DeSoto Central, Oakhaven vs. Fairley at J.P.
