Propane heater. Was that the playoff game at Melrose, or one at South Gibson? I remember that it was cold for both of those. I remember one playoff game at Dyersburg 25 or 30 years ago (could have been 1994) when it was snowing during the game.

Haha...I had it for both of those games! I believe it finally got a little bit warmer when we went to Nashville and played PC that year. But yes, those two games were frigid...below freezing if I recall correctly.

This favors the Chargers IMO.

I agree as long as we don’t turn the ball over cause it’s wet. Some forecasts say winds to 15 mph with higher gusts. That could play havoc with a passing game. Since the Chargers only average 2 or 3 passes per game, the DC team could be more affected than Covington.

The Covington Leader has this info on the game tonight plus a quote from Charger coach JR Kirby:

The Chargers step out of region play to host the Dyer County Choctaws on Friday night on Senior Night for CHS.

“Dyer County is a 5A team,” Kirby said. “They are big physically. They employ a spread offense and will run and throw equally well. We have to get them in space on the edges, a spot where they seem to be vulnerable.”

Timeline of events leading to tonight’s cancellation by Dyer County

Game is approved and moved to Thursday Night, October 14th, on Wednesday October 6th,to try and accommodate football families on fall break and the predicted weather forecast.

Game is moved back to Friday Night, October 15th, Thursday October 7th, due to scheduled class reunions and potential volleyball conflict.

With weather outlook, Wednesday October 13, game is proposed to take place on Thursday, October 14th again with delayed start to accommodate both CHS and DCHS volleyball.

Proposal is denied by DCHS AD.

6pm Friday October 15, game is proposed with delayed start to 8:30 due to lightning. Game was also proposed for noon kick off Saturday, October 16th. DCHS denied both proposals.

This cancellation is not something Covington football ever intended or wanted.

It’s not fair to the seniors. It’s not fair to the kids who are trying to get looks by college recruiters.

It takes money to host and prepare every home game by the Gridiron, as well as the football team such as meals, field paint, and officiating; that is recouped by merchandise sells and the ticket of admission. Bottom line it cost money tonight for the game to be canceled.

Senior Night will now take place the first round of the playoffs.

Sounds like DC didn’t want any

It appears that way. I did hear around 4:30 yesterday that Dyersburg had been hit hard with rain, storms, flooding, etc. Not sure if Newbern was affected that way. Still, there’s no apparent reason that the game could not have been moved to Saturday noon.

I just hope that this occurrence will be remembered before we schedule this school as an opponent in the future. As the old saying goes “ Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me.”
