Ripley @ Covington - 10/20/23

I think it comes down to the same thing every week with Ripley, what Ripley team is actually going to show up on Friday night. They are a great ball team when they want to be, but they have yet to win any "big" games this year. Dug to big of a 1st half hole against Crockett Co & couldn't find a way to get over the hump with Westview, but if there is any year for them to end the losing streak against the Chargers, it's this year! You can throw on Covington, that has been proven this year, but can they get a run game going as well? Ripley has athletes on offense and a defense that's really tightened up after giving up 42 to Crockett Co. If they can stop the Chargers rushing attack & complete some big passes down the field, they definitely have a chance in this one. I think the Hatchie River Rivalry may truly be back this year. I'll take the underdog that no one will give a chance, Ripley 34 Covington 28! :thumb:

The Daily Memphian has this on the game:

https://dailymemphian.com/section/sportshigh-school-sports/article/39240/memphis-prep-football-week-10-high-school-preview-lynx-host-trojans

Ripley (6-2, 4-1 Region 7-3A) at Covington (6-2, 4-1)

The rundown: Skylan Smith (1,262 yards, 8.9 per carry, 21 touchdowns) and the area’s top rushing offense (277.9 yards per game) welcome in a good Ripley team. Covington is sixth in this week’s Class 3A state poll and 10th in the Dandy Dozen.

Here are the results for these two teams versus common opponents. They are both 4-0 against this competition

OPPONENT                           RIPLEY             COVINGTON

Bolivar Central                       45-38                        56-24

McNairy Central                     40-13                        57-14

Liberty Magnet                       48-6                          70-12

Scott's Hill                                49-0                           42-0

I'm not sure that you can tell much from blowout wins like these. Final score depends on how soon the coach pulls his starters, etc.

This is hilarious. Ripley has absolutely 0 chance this game won’t be close no matter what Ripley team shows up.

Covington 42   Ripley 7

Covington has not lost to Ripley in at least 25 years.

Thats what makes high school football great. It doesn't matter what you did last year or that last 25 years against an opponent. Anything can happen in a high school football. I am willing to bet Ripley's team doesn't believe they have zero percent chance to win the game, and if people think the game is decided before games are played, then thats when people get shocked. That is truly why so many of us watch these games with so much intent and excitement this week. Maybe the rivalry gets renewed tonight, maybe not, but I believe this one will be a fun one to watch. Congrats to both teams for a good season so far and best of luck to both moving forward.

What you don’t know is that the 25 years is untrue. I’m a Covington fan and we have beat them 8 times in a row, but not 25. Ripley comes into this game with the same 6-2 record as Covington, and the same 4-1 Region record as Covington. The Tigers sure do have a chance to beat the Chargers.

This game will not be close. Anything can’t can’t happen in high school football which is why there are very few upsets. Talent levels between the two teams is just too much.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
