Value of clinics

Clinics were mentioned on another thread and I would like to know reasons coaches go.

The best clinic I was involed in was at a high school where each staff member made a presentation on the position he coached, drills, techniques, and schemes were covered along with his philosphy of football.

That is a good idea...........another is to go spend a day with a coach and/or staff that you would like to learn from. One must study during his career, because the game is in a constant state of change.

When i go to a clinic i try to come away with at least one new idea or concept, and i am usually successful in doing so. After awhile i think you will find yourself at practice teaching a point and think where did i learn that technique. If you are like me you probably won't remember, but 9 of 10 times you probably picked it up at a clinic or camp listening to, or watching other coaches. Clinics are also a good place to meet other coaches and pick their brain. I love going to schools that run a like offense/defense. Many times you will be able to identify things that may give you trouble and how to adjust. What coach has'nt went in to half time behind or close made one of these adjustments and have it to make a difference. Go learn, enjoy!

I thoroughly enjoy all the clinics I have been to. Like others have said, I always try to learn at least one thing, and so far it has worked. I think it is important for all coaches, especially young ones, to view themselves as "students of the game" in order to learn as much as possible.

Every game is a classroom for coaches who want to improve. Clinics provide great opportunties to learn even more. We must all remember that there are often many ways to do things---not just one way, and sometimes someone else may be doing something that works better than what we are doing. Also, sometimes we may discover that what we are doing ain't so bad after all. Clinics may not be good for everybody, but they are certainly worthwhile for the rest of us.
