Freestyle technique and officials clinic @ Brentwo

Saturday, Mar. 1 beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Brentwood High wrestling room (located behind the school), concluding around 3:30. For wrestlers wanting to learn more about freestyle and anyone wanting to become certified to officiate freestyle. Cost $30 for the purchase of a USA Wrestling card. If you already have your card, then it's free.

 

This is a two part thing. In the morning we will be covering basic freestyle technique and scoring for about 2 1/2 hours, break for lunch (on your own), then come back for an officials' clinic presented by a USWOA certified official. We want to encourage everyone ages 15 and up to attend the officials' clinic and learn how to call freestyle. The more officials we have, the more tournaments we can offer.

Yes, that is correct. My experience with discussions on the national level is that states that require their junior level athletes to referee the kids level, foster athletes with a greater understanding of wrestling. I would highly encourage all of our junior level athletes to referee. USWOA allows someone to become an official at age 15.

Bruin's host successful Freestyle Rules and Officials clinic

The Brentwood Wrestling Room came back to life Saturday, when the Bruins Wrestling Club hosted an informal Freestyle Technique, Rules and Officials clinic following a short vacation from the intense high school season which ended a few weeks ago. The clinic provided an entertaining opportunity for both young and older wrestlers to take their careers to the next level.

 

Coaches Joe Blair (Brentwood), Stephen Shone (Sycamore), Jon Hill (Franklin), Jack Gallagher (Cleveland Middle), Josh Peck (Ravenwood), Jeff Pair (Page), John Gannon, Rossview Assistant, Tim Deaton (Ravenwood Assistant), and Jose Delgado (Houston Assistant) each shared their knowledge and experiences in the demonstrations, discussions, and drills. The session ended with an inspirational video presentation of John Smith wrestling his way to the Olympic Gold Metal.

 

Following the morning session special guest Doug Molin (FILA, M-1) from Indiana provided a freestyle (USWOA) Official's clinic. Competitive success in the international styles of wrestling is interlaced and enhanced with a working knowledge of the rules that apply. Molin stressed maintaining professionalism, neutrality, and keen observation skills. He also emphasized the importance of the prevention of injuries. The demonstrations focused on caution calls, illegal holds, potentially dangerous situations, and some sly unethical tricks to watch for. He said, "At all times a conscientious official should exert flexibility and fairness when appraising the age, ability and experience of the wrestlers presented to his mat. For example, a referee should allow young beginners extended opportunities to execute, appreciate and enjoy their matches as learning opportunities."

 

Many of the morning attendees stayed over for this addditional class. Athletes 15/ years and older are eligible and encouraged to become freestyle officials. The young men who attended the USWOA clinic were: Paul Coffin, Bill Seaman, Stephen Ross, Nick Chamberlain, Joseph Pair, Brandon Quick, Charlie Warfield, Renell McCullough, Aaron Brewster, Kellen Holliman, Luke Castleman, Steve Sloan, BJ Hill, Kelly Felix, Brad Raby, Jacob Blystone, Zack Suggs, Bobby Musser and Will West. Each will be presented whistles and arm bands along with the opportunity to referee matches alongside our experienced officials in order to gain additional knowledge and skill, a win, win situation for all.

 

In addition to the newcomers listed above, many parents listened intently from the sidelines and several referees including Gary Brewster, PA Bowler, Rick Lowry, and Jack Gallagher attended the clinic as a refresher course. ~ sld

I jsut want to good time and I learned alot. I really didn't know anything about the rules until the clinic. You left out Bobby Musser.
