D2 in Clarksville

This weekend we got to see quite a bit.

Most amazement: The face of the Baylor coaches as they saw the weights the Ryan wrestlers weighed in at.

One Ups manship: Actually womanship, the Bradley and Soddy cheerleaders before the finals.

Biggest Understatement: Quinn Gibson is a "pretty good" wrestler.

Fan Support: Shown to be directly related to program success/expectations.

Disjointed: Collierville 171

Clarksville: Proving why they are continuing to host this event.

Worst preseason prediction: Father Ryan is in a rebuilding year.

Scavenger Hunt #1 Item: Find the "if this, then that" sheet P Simpson used in the finals match against McCallie.

Routine: Overton has been to these duals more than anyone since '93.

Cannot be overstated: Jim Morgan is a class act.

---------------------------------------------------

My first State Duals in a couple of years, it was a great one to come back to. I got to call teams I hadnt seen all year (Bradley twice, Soddy, MUS, Baylor, Notre Dame, McCallie).

Getting to officiate with refs from other associations is always a good thing. You pick up new tips and get into great disussions regarding interpretations.

Its a great to feel the adrenalin rush before the finals start, knowing the best of the state teams were matching stategies and bodies, wanting the right combination to bring home the gold. From an officials vantage point, the intensity is incredible. There is no Bradley Bears, Soddy Trojans, Fighting Irish or Tornados...its all green and red, blow the whistle.

The most noticeable thing was style. Like picking a song by the same artist, the 125 and the 145 have the same mechanics when they come from the same wrestling room. MBA does that head-tie drag on everyone with success. If you have a forfiet to a Bradley kid upon shaking the opposing coaches hand he throws in legs....old habits die hard! The CBHS coach called stalling, on HIS kid.

The quality of wrestling was very high. The individuals will be great!

Haha, no kidding. What the heck was that all about? It looked like a scene from a really cheesy teen movie. Don't forget the one guy that did his flips and stuff. However, I must admit that I wouldn't have minded seeing a royal rumble amongst the cheerleaders.

This is a great point of view. As a parent I am always amazed at the strength and talent of all the young men. The cheerleaders bit of entertainment was a fun break for the defeated wrestlers in the stands waiting to watch the finals. I know they talked about the girls on the way home as much as they did the competition. This seems to be part of the tredition now.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
