Does anyone have any info. (time,place, participants, etc.) on an the Pre-Game all-star game in Chattanooga? Last year's games were exciting & competitive! Jake Skogen (formerly of TN Temple) put on a show!

The 2nd Pre-Game Academy Roundball Classic will be held at Tyner Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee on March 26th. There will again be a Girls and Boys Game with 3 point shootouts and a dunk contests in between games. This year's participants are from 17 different schools and are The Best Players in Southeast Tennessee. Stay tuned for more information.

Do you know who's playing this year? I heard through the grapevine that the "big 3" from McMinn Central will be playing in the girls' game, but what about the boys?

All-stars shine in Classic

For players like Brainerd’s Te n isha Parks, Friday’s Pre-Game Academy Roundball Classic all-star basketball game was more than a chance to take the court in her high school uniform one last time.

Even being coached by her aunt, Terrie Parks, normally a rival at Tyner, and winning the MVP award after scoring 16 points in her team’s 81-64 victory weren’t the biggest rewards of her participation.

Instead, she hopes that will come later this spring with an opportunity to continue her career at the college level.

"This helps me a lot," Parks said. "I’m still undecided (about college plans). I’m just looking right now, and this could help me find out if any college coaches want me to come play for them."

Kenneth White, associate program director of the Pre-Game Academy, a local nonprofit organization that works to help student-athletes obtain scholarships and prepare them for college, said about 20 college coaches attended Friday night’s games.

Twenty of the area’s top senior boys players and 18 local girls standouts competed Friday, and most of them have not signed scholarship papers.

"This gives them the type of exposure they might not ordinarily get," White said. "Also, all these boys and girls are seniors, so this gives them one last time to play as a high school student. For some of them, it might be the last time they play organized ball at all, so it’s a good way for them to go out."

For the fans who filled the Tyner gym, the Roundball Classic was a good opportunity to see some of the best local talent all in one place. The boys away team, led by MVP Rodney Henderson of Howard, won 104-90, with many of those points coming on dunks the crowd got a taste of during warm-ups and eagerly anticipated throughout the game.

But in the first half, it was Tyner’s Jerrell Manghane who stole the show by connecting on three 3-pointers from near midcourt. He finished with a game-high 18 points, and also was a part of one of the night’s other most memorable moments.

Rhea County’s Zach Hyatte won the slam-dunk contest after receiving 10s from the judges for the slam during which he jumped over a standing Manghane on his way to the net.

"This is a whole lot of fun," said Henderson, who scored 14 points. "Everybody comes out and shows what they can do."

Bradley Central’s Chris Brown won the boys’ 3-point shooting contest, while the Bearettes’ Tambra Crowe won the girls’ version of the event.

Charlie Moore of East Ridge scored 15 points, while McMinn County’s Jajuan Smith and Howard’s Terrance Lee each scored 15 and Central’s Matt Wilhoite had 13. McMinn County’s Ashley Hardaway followed Parks with 14 pints, while Baylor’s Natalia Cothran scored 13, Red Bank’s Kristy Minton had 12 and Dade County’s Emily Houts 11. There was some good talent at this game-----and it was REALLY organized well. The guys who run the Pre-Game Academy did a great job for the 2nd year in a row. I see that game kind of developing into a Chattanooga tradition!
