Dead Period

Is it OK for teams to practice and play AAU basketball & Travel Team softball as long as their high school coach is not involved?

That should only be a problem if the high school team is playing as a travel team. On our summer travel team the players are from six different high schools......

Ours consist of players from two high schools, but two of the coaches are high school coaches. One of the coaches is a parent.

High school coaches can not interact with their athletes during the dead period. Be careful. People will tell on you. Trust me.

I have seen several high school softball coaches coaching travel teams. Don't know how many of their school ball players were on the teams, but I know there were some.

If a player is playing for their high school coach it is a violation.

Also,the way I understand is,if a parent is a volunteer coach,which it is in your case,then it is also against the rules.

TWO THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

 

1. You can't use the high school facility for games or practice UNLESS the TSSAA OFFICE has sent your school and coach a written waiver allowing the AAU coach and team to use the school facilities during the dead period when every GYM in the STATE is supposed to be closed!

 

2. Your high school coaches CAN NOT HAVE ANY CONTACT WITH HIS/HER PLAYERS DURING THE DEAD PERIOD FOR ANY REASON! If another AAU dad or coach not affiliated with the high school is involved I think it is considered okay. I guess if you bump into your coach at Wal-Mart you can say high but don't talk about "your game."

 

3. Attendance CAN NOT BE MANDATORY to make the high school team!

We are going the safe way and not practicing. A parent volunteered to hold a practice but we're just going to take a two week break. Better safe than sorry!

Also, the parent volunteer (high school) coach is out of town, so that much better for my part. Ha-Ha! Muffin knows what I mean!
