New regions are out

In the new cycle, wrestling will have 10 regions. The existing regions 1-4 are essentially unchanged (although the addition of Knox Catholic and Notre Dame in probably 2 and 4 respectively will make those tougher leagues--I say probably because they aren't shown on the new list). The existing regions 5-7 are now up to five regions (the old District 9 is new Region 5; old Districts 10 and 11 are new Region 6; old Districts 12-14 are new Regions 7-9). And Memphis is renumbered as Region 10.

In other words, the Chattanooga teams still have to scramble for eight places, while Nashville is boosted from 12 to 20 (unless they're also eliminating fourth-place qualifiers, which would be even worse). While quantity is an issue, I would venture to say that the (say) 9-10 wrestlers out of Chattanooga would beat the 16-20 wrestlers out of Nashville more often than not. (In other words, we don't have the volume of bad teams bulking up our regions).

Even within the Midstate, it's not exactly sensible from a competitive standpoint. Point totals of the new regions in last year's state tournament, along with the number of teams contributing at least ten/twenty of those points:

1: 161½/four/two

2: 262/seven/six (and they'll add Knox Catholic)

3: 394½/six/five

4: 276½/three/three (and likely to add Notre Dame)

5: 100/four/two

6: 364½/nine/seven

7: 114/five/three

8: 106/four/two

9: 321½/nine/six

10: 275/eight/six

So in summary, the weak areas get lots of arguably undeserved places, while the powerhouses of Bradley/Hamilton, Williamson/South Davidson, and Montgomery counties still beat each other up first.

I just looked at them and am wondering what the plan is for the state tourney. The plans made by TSSAA have always had to do with geography. It looks as if some programs will luck out with less competitive regions while others will feel they are getting the shaft. Most noticably is Overton was placed in the region with Franklin, Centennial, Brentwood and others. They have lost their stronghold on the Nashville region. We know coach Gabriel can get them up to championship standard. It will definately take more work next year.

The thing I can't figure is that there is still a region with 20 teams listed, Region 2. Hopefully they wil not reduce the number of qualifiers in each region for the state tourney. If that is the case Region 1, 2, 3, 4, and 10 have a lot to complain about. I have said it numerous times but there are always region 4th placers upsetting region champs in the state tournament.
